Friendly Squares June square dance

The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on June 8 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center. Rex Parker will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be cuing line dances. Father’s Day will be the theme. This will be a plus dance. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. There is a $6 donation per person at the door. Cardinal Mooney High School announces summer camp series

Cardinal Mooney High School has announced their summer camp series. All camps will take place at the school, located at 2545 Erie St. in Youngstown, and range in age from kindergarten through eighth-grade. Summer mini samplings with the Youngstown Chapter of the EGA

Join the Youngstown Chapter of the Embroiderer’s Guild of America at the Canfield library on June 5 at 6:30 p.m. in making summer mini-samplings in redwork. This class teaches basic embroidery stitches using red pearl cottons and floss on white fabric. Stitchers will be choosing their designs in class or will be replicating the sample. Learn the secrets of redwork embroidery, popular in the 30’s and 40’s, with an updated flair using metallic threads and bead accents. Registration is required. Join the Canfield library on June 6 at 6 p.m. for a movie night where they will be watching a newly released DVD. Feel free to bring your own small snacks and drinks. This event is for adults and teens. Children under the age of 7 must be accompanied by an adult. The movie will be either PG or PG 13.

See how you can connect with family and friends on Facebook at this event at the Canfield library on June 26 at 6:30 p.m. They will help you personalize your profile so that you can start posting, sharing and liking right away. Canfield Friends to meet

There will be a meeting of the Friends of PLYMC - Canfield Committee on June 19 at 1:30 p.m. at the Canfield library.

Public employee meeting set

Public Employee Retirees will meet at 12 p.m. on June 4 at the Avion Banquet Center, located at 2177 Western Reserve Road. Lunch will be served at noon for a cost of $13 for paid members and $15 for others. Updates from the state regarding the proposed changes to the O.P.E.R.S. health/pension benefits will be presented. All public employees and retirees under O.P.E.R.S. may attend the Mahoning County P.E.R.I. Chapter 18 meetings. Meetings are held six times a year to share information and update members regarding legislative changes to the health and pension benefits. The membership fee to join is $10 yearly, and can be paid at the meeting.

Italian Fest looking for nominations

The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2019 is seeking nominations for the Italian Man and the Italian Woman of the Year. The nominees would be considered for the highest honor and if selected would be introduced in person at the opening ceremony at 5 p.m. on Aug. 2, in downtown Youngstown. The Oakland Center for the Arts presents “Rumpelstiltskin”

The Oakland Center for the Arts Kids’ First Theater Incentive will present the beloved Grimm Brothers’ tale, “Rumpelstiltskin,” adapted and directed by Patricia Fagan at the Canfield library on June 9 at 2 p.m. Audience members will help the actors bring the rollicking story to a “happily ever after” ending.

Automotive maintenance 101

Learn about the condition of the wiper blades, check the air pressure of the tires, along with the tread depth, inspect the air filter, check the fluid levels–such as oil, brake, windshield wiper, coolant and transmission–and top them off, complete an oil, lube and filter job, check its tire pressure, change a tire, test your battery, inspect the belts and put together a car emergency kit. Learn it all at this event on June 22 at 2:30 p.m. at the Canfield library. This will be a hands-on class as we will be outside (weather permitting.) For adults and teens.

Mad science

Get your science on at the Canfield library on June 28 at 10 a.m. Mad Science promises a fun and interactive, as well as educational program this summer. All of their programs meet science curriculum standards and are led by trained instructors. This event is for school-age children. Bonding with Babies and Books

Bonding with Babies and Books will take place on Thursdays in June at 10 a.m. at the Canfield library. This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.

Tales and Talk for 2s and 3s

Join the Canfield library every Tuesday in June at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

Doughnuts with dad

Children of all ages bring your dad or favorite male figure to the Canfield library on June 15 at 11 a.m. for a morning of fun. Enjoy doughnuts, juice and coffee. Make a craft and enjoy other activities.

Gotta Move story time

This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a care-giver. Join the Canfield library on June 5 and 19 at 10 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.

Mother Earth and Green Team

Join the Green Team this summer at the Canfield library for a fun and exciting program on June 11 at 2 p.m. Mother Earth herself will be reading the book, “Dear Children of the Earth” by Schim Schimmel. This powerful and dramatically illustrated letter from Mother Earth to her children is a tender reminder of the responsibility we all have to protect the world in which we live. After reading the book we’ll create earth-friendly crafts made from recovered material. At the conclusion of the program, participants will receive Earth-themed coloring books and recycling information to share with their parents. This program is recommended for children in grades pre-K through 5.

Read and make

Go to the Canfield library on June 12 and 26 at 10 a.m. and read together, sing songs and make a fun craft. This event is for children ages 3-5.

Roaring safari party

Join the Canfield library on June 13 on 1 p.m. for activities, games, craft and snack as we celebrate the upcoming box office release of the beloved safari animals. This event is for children of all ages.

Toy box takeover

Join the Canfield library on June 19 at 6 p.m. as they travel out of this world and straight into the toy box. They will celebrate the upcoming box office release of the latest chapter in a tale of our favorite play-time characters. Enjoy an evening of fun with games, activities, crafts and a snack. This event is fun for the whole family.

Lego my library

Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Canfield library on June 1 at 2:30 p.m. and June 20 at 6 p.m. Legos will be provided. This event is for children, ages 6 and up.

Tales to tails

Read to your favorite therapy dogs at the Canfield library in June 10 at 6 p.m. This helps develop reading skills, promotes confidence and encourages a love of reading. Bring a book of your choice or the librarians will find one for you. This event is for children in grades K and up. Therapy dogs provided by Pet Partners of Greater Youngstown, a local Pet Therapy group.

Get walking at the library

Get fit every Monday morning in June at the Canfield library. Join a librarian for a 9:30 a.m. 20-30 minute walk along the library walking path and nearby neighborhood. Make new friends and join the fun. In the event of rain, they will walk inside the meeting room. This event is for adults and teens.

Learn to line dance

Line dancing is a fun, exciting way to dance your way to good health. Line dances are very easy to learn, mainly because the steps are straightforward and you do not have to coordinate your movements with a partner. Line dances also involve repeating series of steps, so if you get lost, you can easily catch up with the rest of the class. This class, which will take place on June 13 and 27 at 6:30 p.m. at the Canfield library, will combine low, moderate and high energy line dance routines and will help you burn calories at the same time. Participation is limited to one session per person each month to accommodate demand, registration required. Journaling - your creative outlet

Journaling is your creative outlet to relieve stress, release emotions, raise clarity and confidence. An event will take place at the Canfield library on June 11 at 6:30 p.m. for those who enjoy journaling as a tool or are curious about trying it. Prompts and activities are used, as well as class sharing and discussion. This event is for adults and teens.

Glow-in-the-dark jars

Create glow-in-the-dark jars using glow-in-the-dark paint at the Canfield library on June 29 at 2:30 p.m. Materials and snacks will be provided. Space is limited and registration is required. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Canfield library to register. This event is for grades 5 and up.

Rainbow wall hanging

Join the Canfield library on June 24 at 6:30 p.m. to create a rainbow wall hanging and create a cozy and stylish art piece for your home. Space is limited, registration required. This event is for adults and teens.

Sit and stitch

Sit and stitch with others at the Canfield library at 11 a.m. on June 12 and 26. Share ideas and skills while making new friends. Bring your UFOs (unfinished objects): quilting, appliqu , knitting or crochet projects, and supplies. This is not an instructor-led activity. This event is for adults.

Pink Ribbon Golf Classic set for July 15

The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at the Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 15. The cost is $110 per golfer. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The 18-hole four-person scramble will be followed by lunch and a Chinese auction and raffle. Italian Fest looking for nominations

The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2019 is seeking nominations for the Italian Man and Italian Woman of the Year. The nominees would be considered for the highest honor and if selected would be introduced in person at the festival opening ceremony at 5 p.m. on Aug. 2, in downtown Youngstown. Scholarship applications available

The 2019 applications for a $1,000 Youngstown State University scholarship from The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest are available by contacting Deborah Mottle at mottlesmurals@gmail.com. The application deadline is June 15.

Gamblers Anonymous Meetings

If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous may be able to help. Gamblers Anonymous meetings will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting is offered on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one-and-a-half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend.

Ursuline Education and Wellness Center announces guided labyrinth walks

The Ursuline Education and Wellness Center, located at 4280 Shields Road, recently began its 2019 Guided Labyrinth Walk season. This year’s themes celebrate aspects of compassion, a virtue central to the ministry of St. Angela Merici, who founded the Ursuline order in 1535. All persons of faith are invited to participate in these free, weather-permitting events. Walks generally take 20-30 minutes. The themes by date are June 20 at 6:30 p.m. - “The gift of empathy;” July 18 at 6:30 p.m. - “Mindfulness – how little we know;” Aug. 15 at 6:30 p.m. - “How should we speak to one another;” Sept. 12 at 6:30 p.m. - “Knowledge, recognition and action” and Oct. 13 at 2 p.m. - “Love your enemies.” A presentation on the history of labyrinths precedes this walk. The labyrinth is open year-round from dawn to dusk for all persons of faith. There is no cost to use the labyrinth, which is accessible for different physical abilities and offers ample parking. Printed guides are provided at the labyrinth’s entrance giving suggestions for following the path, but there is no right or wrong way to experience the sacred walk. Library closings

All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed on May 26-27.

Kindergarten readiness stations

The library’s kindergarten readiness stations are in every library branch and feature fun activities for you and your preschool child to complete together. For the month of May, the stations focus on Approaches Toward Learning — the attitude that children bring to social interactions and learning experiences. The stations will encourage initiative and curiosity. They will also develop the children’s level of attention, engagement and persistence as they complete fun activities. These factors are consistent predictors of academic success. Stop by the Canfield branch to visit kindergarten readiness stations and help your child build these important skills.

Drop in during Canfield library hours during the month of May to stretch your shopping dollars by swapping coupons. This program is for adults.

Summer Discovery Program

Children can sign up online or at any Mahoning County public library on or after May 1, to register for this year’s Summer Discovery Program, A Universe of Stories. Summer Discovery runs from May 1 through July 31. Children can complete activities or read books to earn prizes (while supplies last) and to earn a chance to win a gift card. Children who sign up will receive a Dairy Queen coupon and Mahoning Valley Scrappers game voucher. Children who complete the program by July 24, will be invited to a breakfast event on Aug. 2, featuring author Laura Numeroff. Teens and adults can sign up online at LibraryVisit.org or in person and read 10 books to earn your choice of book. Read 15 books for a chance to win a $25 Amazon gift card. Participants will receive a Mahoning Valley Scrappers game voucher just for signing up.

Eeewww! That’s gross

Visit the Canfield library at 6 p.m. on May 30, to hear a gross story, guess gross items in boxes, see some gross science experiments and more totally gross fun. This program is for children in grades kindergarten through four.

YSU to offer robotics and 3D printing camps

Youngstown State University’s Ohio Youth Entrepreneurship Program will host two camp programs this summer for students in middle school and high school. Biz3D is a four-day camp where high school students learn about what it takes to start a business and how 3D printing can be used. Students will have hands-on experience with 3D printing and design, learn a computer-aided design program and explore the business, educational and career opportunities and skills of this emerging technology. A field trip to the Youngstown Business Incubator and America Makes is planned. The camp will take place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on June 24-27, at Valley STEM+ME2, located at 7300 Palmyra Road in Canfield. Learn to build a robot, program it and compete in exciting challenges at the three-day Vex IQ Robotics Camp. This hands-on camp is for upcoming sixth through eighth graders, and robotics experience is not necessary. The camp will take place from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on June 24-26, at Youngstown Business Incubator, located at 29 Vindicator Square in Youngstown. Treasures of the Trunk fundraiser to be June 8

The Poland Lions are hosting their fifth annual Treasures of the Trunk Sale on June 8. The event takes place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. in Poland Seminary High School’s stadium parking lot, located at State Route 170 and Dobbins Road. Vendors are being sought for this one day sale. Crafters, home goods, furniture, toys, specialty items and garage sale items are welcome. There is limit of 100 spaces. Cost per space is $15 until May 30. Spaces increase to $20 after May 30. YWCA accepting entries for 37th annual Women’s Art Exhibition

YWCA Mahoning Valley is accepting entries for its 37th Annual Women Artists: A Celebration! Art Show to take place June 28 through July 26 at YWCA’s downtown Youngstown office, located at 25 W. Rayen Ave. The art exhibition showcases work by local, regional and national women artists. The juried show features all media, including paintings, drawings, photographs, fiber art, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, videography and metal work. Returning for a second time is a juried show for young women ages 14-17 from Mahoning and Trumbull counties. The show will feature seventeen works selected by jurors from the YWCA Women Artists Committee and will run in conjunction with the Women Artists show. Two-dimensional work is eligible for the 17 Under 17 show. Entry forms for both shows are available at YWCA’s offices in Youngstown and Warren and on the YWCA’s website at ywcamahoningvalley.org/women-artists. Entries are due by April 8. Priscilla Roggenkamp, Associate Professor of Art at Ashland University, will serve as the juror for the 2019 show. A ticketed Preview Party will take place on June 28 from 6-9 p.m. at the YWCA. Volunteers needed for fine arts show

A juried fine arts show is being planned for August in Canfield and organizers are looking for additional help. Arts on the Commons is planned for Aug. 3-10. The committee is searching for enthusiastic, organized individuals, whether or not they have a background in fine arts. Arts on the Commons will be soliciting nationally for entrants for the show. Dr. Lou Zona, director of the Butler Institute of American Art, has agreed to be the juror and Nils Johnson has pledged the initial funds for prizes through the Johnson Foundation.
