Friendly Squares June square dance
The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on June 8 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center. Rex Parker will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be cuing line dances. Cardinal Mooney High School has announced their summer camp series. Healthy eating program set for June 4
Healthy Eating for You, a free program sponsored by Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley and led by a registered dietitian, will address portion size, reading and understanding nutrition labels and learning to eat mindfully. Apprentice’s Inn

Memorial Mile race to take place on May 27
The 29th annual Memorial Mile running road race will take place on May 27 at 9:35 a.m. in Boardman. Some of the best runners in the area will compete for gift certificates and awards in 14 age groups. Runners ages 11 and under are free (no T-shirt) with pre-registration by May 18. The entry fee is $10 in advance for all others and $13 on the day of the race for everyone. The race starts at Routes 224 and 7. Day of race registration and packets can be picked up at Walgreens at Route 224 and Route 7. It is sponsored by Walgreens, 910 Rapid Care, Coke, the DeBartolo Corporation, Armstrong, Novak and Davis Insurance and other local businesses.
‘I Read YA!’ book club

Public Employee Retirees will meet at 12 p.m. on June 4 at the Avion Banquet Center, located at 2177 Western Reserve Road. The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2019 is seeking nominations for the Italian Man and the Italian Woman of the Year. Commemorating the 75th anniversary of D-Day
Courage. Sacrifice. These two words begin and end any discussion of the pivotal landing operations at Normandy, France that commenced June 6, 1944. As the Boardman library commemorates this event, join Tim Seman as he shares the profiles of some Mahoning Valley men who were there. This presentation is an opportune time to learn about the military research databases and other resources that can further your genealogical projects. Mother Earth and Green Team
Join the Green Team this summer at the Boardman library for a fun and exciting program on June 12 at 10 a.m. Mother Earth herself will be reading the book, “Dear Children of the Earth” by Schim Schimmel. This powerful and dramatically illustrated letter from Mother Earth to her children is a tender reminder of the responsibility we all have to protect the world in which we live. After reading the book we’ll create earth-friendly crafts made from recovered material. At the conclusion of the program, participants will receive Earth-themed coloring books and recycling information to share with their parents. This program is recommended for children in grades pre-K through 5.
Lego my library
Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Boardman library on June 8 at 10 a.m. Legos will be provided. This event is for children, ages 6 and up.

For the Love of Stitching with the Youngstown Chapter of the EGA
Join the Youngstown Chapter of the Embroiderer’s Guild of America as they teach you Canvas Work at the Boardman library on June 13 from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. This class will teach a beginning counted-canvas project in patriotic colors with all supplies to finish the piece into a scissor fob or very special key ring. Secure drug disposal now offered at Akron Children’s in Boardman
Akron Children’s Hospital is now collecting unused prescription medications in a secure dropbox at the Beeghly Campus in Boardman. The hospital recently installed the collection box that is part of the LifeInCheck Consumer Drug Take-Back program. It’s located at 6505 Market St. in the lobby of Building A. While many communities participate in annual drug collection events, having the receptacle available permanently will allow Akron Children’s to provide the public with an easily accessible site to dispose of unwanted prescription and over-the-counter medications. Accepted in the dropbox are unused or expired prescription and over-the-counter medications and pet medications. Not accepted are illegal drugs, inhalers, needles, liquids and lotions. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic set for July 15
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at the Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 15. The cost is $110 per golfer. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The 18-hole four-person scramble will be followed by lunch and a Chinese auction and raffle. I Can Ride Bike Camp set for June 10-14
The Down Syndrome Association of the Valley will host its sixth annual I Can Ride Bike Camp the week of June 10–14, at Boardman Glenwood Middle School in Boardman. Persons with challenges can learn to ride a two-wheeled bicycle in one week using patented adaptive equipment through the nationally recognized iCAN Bike program. Participants can register at dsav.org. Down Syndrome Association of the Valley fundraisers pay for the bulk of the costs to bring I Can Bike to the area, leaving members to contribute $50 to participate per person, while non–members pay $75 per person. High school and college student volunteers are needed and must complete volunteer registration via dsav.org.
Boardman schools to present band concerts
Boardman Glenwood Junior High and Center Intermediate Schools will present a spring band concerts on May 30. The fifth-grade, sixth-grade and seventh-grade band spring concert is May 30 at 7 p.m. in the Boardman High School Performing Arts Center. The eighth-grade jazz ensemble is directed by high school band director Thomas Ruggieri. Several students will be featured on improvisation solos in various musical styles. Admission and donations accepted at the door. Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for students and free for senior citizens.
Gamblers Anonymous Meetings
If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous may be able to help. Gamblers Anonymous meetings will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting is offered on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one-and-a-half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend.
Library closings
All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed on May 26-27.
Kindergarten readiness stations
The library’s kindergarten readiness stations are in every library branch and feature fun activities for you and your preschool child to complete together. For the month of May, the stations focus on Approaches Toward Learning — the attitude that children bring to social interactions and learning experiences. The stations will encourage initiative and curiosity. They will also develop the children’s level of attention, engagement and persistence as they complete fun activities. These factors are consistent predictors of academic success. Stop by the Boardman branch to visit kindergarten readiness stations and help your child build these important skills.
Summer Discovery Program
Children can sign up online or at any Mahoning County public library on or after May 1, to register for this year’s Summer Discovery Program, A Universe of Stories. Summer Discovery runs from May 1 through July 31. Children can complete activities or read books to earn prizes (while supplies last) and to earn a chance to win a gift card. Children who sign up will receive a Dairy Queen coupon and Mahoning Valley Scrappers game voucher. Children who complete the program by July 24, will be invited to a breakfast event on Aug. 2, featuring author Laura Numeroff. Teens and adults can sign up online at LibraryVisit.org or in person and read 10 books to earn your choice of book. Read 15 books for a chance to win a $25 Amazon gift card. Participants will receive a Mahoning Valley Scrappers game voucher just for signing up.

Oral history and the conveyance of experience
Visit the Boardman library from 6:30-8:30 p.m. May 30, to learn about oral history. Oral history is a first-person narrative that preserves a portrait of experiences and interpretations of events. Oral accounts provide eyewitness testimony, offering a richer description of the past, to teach us what has changed and what has stayed the same. Historical documents alone do not provide a full spectrum of knowledge.Oral history is the place to discover personal stories and truths that have been untold or forgotten. During this program,oral history resources will be examined and the best practices for conducting effective interviews will be discussed. YSU to offer robotics and 3D printing camps
Youngstown State University’s Ohio Youth Entrepreneurship Program will host two camp programs this summer for students in middle school and high school. Biz3D is a four-day camp where high school students learn about what it takes to start a business and how 3D printing can be used. Students will have hands-on experience with 3D printing and design, learn a computer-aided design program and explore the business, educational and career opportunities and skills of this emerging technology. A field trip to the Youngstown Business Incubator and America Makes is planned. The camp will take place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on June 24-27, at Valley STEM+ME2, located at 7300 Palmyra Road in Canfield. Learn to build a robot, program it and compete in exciting challenges at the three-day Vex IQ Robotics Camp. This hands-on camp is for upcoming sixth through eighth graders, and robotics experience is not necessary. Treasures of the Trunk fundraiser to be June 8
The Poland Lions are hosting their fifth annual Treasures of the Trunk Sale on June 8. The event takes place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. in Poland Seminary High School’s stadium parking lot, located at State Route 170 and Dobbins Road. Vendors are being sought for this one day sale. Crafters, home goods, furniture, toys, specialty items and garage sale items are welcome. There is limit of 100 spaces. Cost per space is $15 until May 30. Spaces increase to $20 after May 30. YWCA accepting entries for 37th annual Women’s Art Exhibition
YWCA Mahoning Valley is accepting entries for its 37th Annual Women Artists: A Celebration! Art Show to take place June 28 through July 26 at YWCA’s downtown Youngstown office, located at 25 W. Rayen Ave. The art exhibition showcases work by local, regional and national women artists. The juried show features all media, including paintings, drawings, photographs, fiber art, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, videography and metal work. Returning for a second time is a juried show for young women ages 14-17 from Mahoning and Trumbull counties. The show will feature seventeen works selected by jurors from the YWCA Women Artists Committee and will run in conjunction with the Women Artists show. Two-dimensional work is eligible for the 17 Under 17 show. Entry forms for both shows are available at YWCA’s offices in Youngstown and Warren and on the YWCA’s website at ywcamahoningvalley.org/women-artists. Entries are due by April 8. Priscilla Roggenkamp, Associate Professor of Art at Ashland University, will serve as the juror for the 2019 show. A ticketed Preview Party will take place on June 28 from 6-9 p.m. at the YWCA.
