The late Dominic Edward Carcelli has been named the second Struthers High School alumnus to be honored at the annual Heldman Memorial Day Golf Outing on Saturday at the Bedford Trails Golf Course. He is the 2019 Memorial Scholar-Athlete Honoree. This honor is awarded to a late SHS alumnus who exemplified the criteria of the Otis R. Heldman Sr. and Jr. Struthers High School Scholar-Athlete Award and $8,000 scholarship.

The honoree will have been a top scholar, selected into the National Honor Society, and earned at least two varsity letters in an OHSAA-sanctioned sport. Carcelli was a member of SHS class of 1963. He was a top student, graduating fifth in his class with a GPA of 3.72. He was elected into the National Honor Society in his junior year, exemplifying the required criteria of “Scholarship, Leadership, Character and Service.”

Swim team registration

YOUNGSTOWN

Registration is underway for the Jewish Community Center Logan Ducks and Ducklings swim teams. Practices take place Monday through Friday at the main campus May 28-31 at 5:30 p.m. for beginners age 10 and under and at 6:30 p.m. for advanced swimmers and anyone 11 and older; June 3-7 at the main campus at 5:30 p.m. for beginners and 6:30 for advanced; and June 3-July 2 at the Logan campus at 9 a.m. for advanced swimmers and 10:30 a.m. for beginners.

The Logan Ducklings is for children who can swim half the length of the pool, the whole length with a backpack or on the teacher’s recommendation. Meets are optional. Logan campus practice will be Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 10:30 a.m. June 3-July 27. Cost is $100/member with one child; $150/member with multiple children; and $150/nonmember with one child. Entrepreneurship conference planned

Tickets are now on sale for the Women’s Entrepreneurship Conference hosted by YWCA Mahoning Valley. The event will take place June 13 at YWCA’s Youngstown office, 25 W. Rayen Ave. Doors open for registration at 4:30 p.m., with a program running from 5 to 8:30 p.m.

The event is the second in a series promoting women’s entrepreneurship. Area speakers will focus on the process of securing capital and building funding for a business and marketing and promoting businesses. The event is suitable for women at all stages of the entrepreneurial journey, from those exploring opportunities, to those with established businesses. Speakers include Kim Hamilton, a career and life coach; Kristen Olmi, managing member of K.O. Consulting, LLC,; and Carmella Williams, director of diversity and inclusion at YBI and founder of Carmella Marie Inc.

General admission is $5, which includes dinner. Vendor tables for local women-owned businesses are available for $20 per table and resource tables for local nonprofit and community organizations are available for $10. Quantities are limited. Student awarded scholarship

LEXINGTON, KY.

Leigha Cameron, native of Mineral Ridge and an undergraduate at the University of Kentucky College of Social Work, was awarded the Social Work International Horizons Scholarship during a recent ceremony at the UK Gatton Student Center. Her interests include working with children, and mental health.
