Former F1 champ Niki Lauda dies at 70
BERLIN
Three-time Formula One world champion Niki Lauda, who won two of his titles after a horrific crash that left him with serious burns and went on to become a prominent figure in the aviation industry, has died. He was 70.
The Austria Press Agency reported that Lauda’s family said in a statement he “passed away peacefully” on Monday.
Lauda won the F1 drivers’ championship in 1975 and 1977 with Ferrari and again in 1984 with McLaren.
In 1976, he was badly burned when he crashed during the German Grand Prix but made an astonishingly fast return to racing just six weeks later.
Lauda remained closely involved with the Formula One circuit after retiring as a driver in 1985, and in recent years served as the non-executive chairman of the Mercedes team.
Cowboys’ Elliott detained by police
LAS VEGAS
Dallas Cowboys star Ezekiel Elliott was handcuffed by police, but not arrested, after a scuffle involving event staff at a Las Vegas music festival.
Police Officer Laura Meltzer said Monday that the 23-year-old running back was detained briefly early Saturday during the Electric Daisy Carnival at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Cellphone video posted by celebrity website TMZ appeared to show Elliott speaking with a woman and then with several security and event staff members, including one who falls backward over a metal parking area barricade.
Elliott’s attorney, Frank Salzano in New York, told TMZ that event security misconstrued the situation and overreacted, and that Elliott left Las Vegas for Dallas after the incident to be at his youth football camp Sunday.
Panthers get tax break in South Carolina
COLUMBIA, S.C.
South Carolina legislators are expected to clear the final hurdle to giving the Carolina Panthers up to $120 million in tax breaks to move their practice fields and team headquarters out of North Carolina.
The Senate voted 23-16 on Monday to approve a compromise smoothing over small differences in the bill. A few hours later, the House passed the bill 88-18. Gov. Henry McMaster is expected to quickly sign it into law.
The bill exempts the Panthers from paying state income taxes for players, coaches and other employees for 15 years as long as they use the money to build their new complex near Rock Hill.
Opponents say the state shouldn’t help a billionaire NFL owner.
The team would continue to play games in Charlotte, North Carolina.
World Cup fans discover seating issues
Fans planning to attend the Women’s World Cup in France are finding out that the seats they bought might not be together.
Tickets were made available to print Monday and ticket holders learned their seats were sometimes split up in separate rows and even sections — even families with young children were separated.
FIFA used the verified Women’s World Cup Twitter account to remind fans that they were notified during purchases that not all seats would be together. A separate post says orders may be modified for parents whose seats are separated from those of their young children.
The tournament starts June 7 and runs through July 7.
