Division II

Ursuline’s Arfaras, Tsudis win district championship

AKRON

Ursuline senior doubles tandem Austin Arfaras and Luke Tsudis advance to the state tournament as district champions. The pair won a battle of No. 1 seeds by beating Geneva’s Isaac Palinkas and Nathan Palinkas, 6-2, 7-5. Arfaras and Tsudis beat Hawken’s Gabe Perla and Neil Tewari, 6-3, 7-5, in the semifinals.

Ursuline’s Gavin Blacksher and Josj Khavari head to Mason as a No. 3 seed. They fell to Isaac Palinkas and Nathan Palinkas, 4-6, 6-0, 6-1, in the semis, but rallied to beat Perla and Tewari, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2, in the third-place match.

In singles play, Ursuline’s Greg Morgione finished district runner-up to Andrew Zimcosky of Chagrin Falls (6-3, 6-2). Warren JFK’s Armand Nannicola fell in the semifinals to Zimcosky, 6-1, 6-1, but won his third-place match, 6-3, 7-5 against Chagrin Falls’ Jackson Quinn.

REGULAR SEASON

JEFFERSON

South Range clinched the Northeast 8 title. Jake Gehring hit two doubles and Trey Pancake and Brandon Mikos each hit one. Mikos started the game and threw four shutout innings, walking one and striking out four. Marc Woods and Andrew Mehalic each had two hits for Jefferson.

Columbus Crusaders 31, Chaney 25

YOUNGSTOWN

Columbus scored the winning try with 2.5 seconds to play to beat the Cowboys at Rayen Stadium. Shawn Rollins scored twice for Chaney and Rashawn Perkins, Anthony West and JR Tellington each scored on try. Chaney missed all five of its conversions. Anthony Pratt made 18 tackles, Tellington had 14 and Elijah Smith had 12 for the Cowboys.

East-Avon Lake match moved to today at 2 p.m.
