Memorial Day parade planned in Leetonia

LEETONIA

Leetonia American Legion Post 131 and Washingtonville VFW Post 5532 will sponsor a Memorial Day parade May 27. The event will start at 9 a.m. with a wreath placing ceremony at Post 5532 in Washingtonville, followed by the parade at 10, which will begin at Leetonia High School and go through Wick Park. Ralph Diaz will receive a Medal of Honor at Oak Hill Cemetery following the parade.

Adult book discussion group to meet

SALEM

The book “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society” by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows will be discussed at 7 p.m. May 28 at the adult book discussion group in the Adult Reading Room of the Salem Public Library, 821 E. State St. The story begins in January 1946 when London is emerging from the shadow of WW II and writer Juliet Ashton, famous for her wartime humor column, is looking for her next book subject. The book may be borrowed from the library. The discussion group is free and open to the public. For information, call 330-332-0042.

Sophomore advances to Miss Ohio Pageant

MANSFIELD

Caitlin Seifert of Niles was selected recently to serve as Miss Oxford after competing in a pageant of 12 contestants from around the state at Peabody Hall Theater on the campus of Miami University. She will advance to compete in the Miss Ohio Scholarship Pageant that will take place June 15 in Mansfield.

Seifert will be promoting her platform, “Unity in the Community: Making your Community a Better Home through Volunteerism,” throughout the year. She also will raise funds for the Children’s Miracle Network.

Seifert is a sophomore at Kent State University studying fashion merchandising with minors in entrepreneurship and marketing. She graduated from Niles McKinley High School in 2017, and is a performer, public speaker and community service advocate.

‘Go Wild in the Park’ to take place May 29

SALEM

Karen Santee, arborist at Huston-Brumbaugh Nature Center, University of Mount Union, will be the guest speaker at the “Go Wild in the Park” program that will take place at 6:30 p.m. May 29 at the nature trail in Waterworth Memorial Park. Santee will name and give characteristics of trees along the trail. Attendees should wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a camera.

The program is hosted twice a month through a partnership of Salem Parks and Recreation Department and Salem Public Library. Registration is required and can be done online at www.salem.lib.oh.us; by calling the library at 330-332-0042; or by calling Salem Parks Department at 330-271-8913. The program is free and open to the public.

Parking is available near the trail, follow “Go Wild in the Park” signs.

Chapter regent named outstanding junior

The Ohio Society Daughters of the American Revolution recently named Mahoning Chapter Regent Sarah Keeler of Canfield the 2019 OSDAR Outstanding Junior at the 120th State Conference. Keeler joined the DAR in November 2013 and is an active member. She is the Ohio Society DAR chairwoman for the Flag of the U.S.A. Committee, which promotes proper use of the American flag. She previously served as chapter corresponding secretary and registrar and has held numerous chapter committee chairmanships.

Keeler serves as U.S. Congressman Bill Johnson’s district director. She will advance to the national competition. The winner will be announced at the 128th Continental Congress, which will take place June 24-30 at NSDAR Headquarters in Washington, D.C.
