Allison Smith threw a five-inning no-hitter for Champion. Smith improved to 14-0, striking out 11 and walking 1. Emma Gumont hit two home runs and a double with four RBIs for the Golden Flashes (26-2, 14-0 AAC Blue). Brooklynn Whitt, Abby White and Smith all hit home runs. Smith also had doubled. Abbi Grace, Cassidy Shaffer, Gabby Hollenbaugh and Carli Swipas each had two hits. Smith and White had two RBIs each. Kaedyn Sutton struck out one and walked two in the loss for the Rebels (21-8, 8-5).

Clay Wiesen homered for the Hornets, who lost in nine innings. Asher Patton singled and doubled in the loss. Hayden Gallagher started and threw three shutout innings for Hickory. Zach Lordo, Connor Evans, Asher Patton, Kyle Moyer, and Brandon Boyles all threw in relief, with Moyer taking the loss while throwing 1 2/3 innings. Hickory closes out the regular season at 12-4 and moves on to face Girard, Pa., on Monday at Slippery Rock University.

BOYS TENNIS

Five Ursuline players qualify for state tournament

AKRON

Ursuline will send five players, including two doubles teams, to the Division II Boys Tennis State Tournament at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason after the opening round of the district tournament on Friday. Warren JFK’s Armand Nannicola has also clinched a state bid. In singles play, the Irish’s Greg Morgione advanced to the district semis as a No. 1 seed after straight-set wins against Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin’s Kevin McGinty, 6-1, 6-0, and Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy’s Cole Farren, 6-0. 6-4. As the No. 2 seed, Nannicola avoided top-seed David Dilyard because he was upset by Bay’s Ben Anderson in the opening round. Nannicola beat St. John’s Cayleb Haynes, 7-5, 6-2 and followed up with a win against Anderson, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. In doubles play, Irish seniors Luke Tsudis and Austin Afaras swept Gilmour Academy’s Sam Sullivan and Rob Sullivan, 6-1, 6-0 and followed up with a win against CVCA’s Curtis Kolb and Noah Rios, 6-1, 6-2. Ursuline’s Gavin Blacksher and Josh Khavari made state with wins against Hawken’s Nathan Miao and Ryan Levine and Orange’s Ilon Goldberg and Jonah Conway, 6-3,6-2. All competitors will play their district semifinals and finals today.
