Historical society leads tour
On May 20, members of the Poland Historical Society will be leading the Poland McKinley School third-graders on a tour of historic South Main Street. The students will assemble at Village Hall, located at 308 S. Main, at 9:40 a.m. and will be divided onto four groups for the tour. Along the tour, students will hear about many of the historic homes and the people who occupied them along with other buildings from the nineteenth century. Among the stops will be the site of President William McKinley’s home, the Old Stone Tavern, Yellow Creek, Village Hall and the Village Green. The rain date is May 21.
Strawberry 5K and Fun Run to be June 15
On June 15, Molnar Farms is hosting the second annual Strawberry 5K and Fun Run through the farm grounds, located at 3115 E. Western Reserve Road in Poland. Proceeds after expenses and all food donations will benefit Second Harvest Food Bank. The cost for the 5K is $35. The Fun Run (0.5 miles) is $5 or five canned goods. The 5K begins at 9 a.m. and the Fun Run at 10:30 a.m. Runners that sign up for the 5K before June 5 will receive a free race T-shirt. Newcomers have last luncheon until fall
The last luncheon for the “fiscal year” for Newcomers of Mahoning Valley will be on May 22 at Johnny’s Restaurant at 11:30 a.m. The installation of officers for 2019-2020 will take place, along with discussion of possible programs starting in September. The birthday group will be meeting on May 21. The next book club meeting will be on June 6 where they will be discussing “Manhattan Beach” by Egan. Newcomers was formed more than 25 years ago to offer those with lifestyle changes an opportunity to meet new people and become acquainted with events and places in the community. Bonding with Babies and Books
Bonding with Babies and Books will take place on Wednesdays in June at 10 a.m. at the Poland library. This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.
Big Bird’s adventure with the Carnegie Science Center
Sit in the Carnegie Science Center’s Digital Planetarium, which will be at the Poland library on June 13 at 10 a.m., and enjoy the show as Elmo and his friend, Hu Hu Zhu, a Muppet from the Chinese co-production of Sesame Street Æ, go on an exciting trip to discover the sun, moon and stars. At the end of the show, Big Bird, Elmo and Hu Hu Zhu pick a friendship star to celebrate the idea that even though they live in two different countries, they still share the same sky. Public employee meeting set
Public Employee Retirees will meet at 12 p.m. on June 4 at the Avion Banquet Center, located at 2177 Western Reserve Road. Lunch will be served at noon for a cost of $13 for paid members and $15 for others. Updates from the state regarding the proposed changes to the O.P.E.R.S. health/pension benefits will be presented. All public employees and retirees under O.P.E.R.S. may attend the Mahoning County P.E.R.I. Chapter 18 meetings. Meetings are held six times a year to share information and update members regarding legislative changes to the health and pension benefits. The membership fee to join is $10 yearly, and can be paid at the meeting.
Outback Ray’s Amazing Animal Show
Outback Ray’s Amazing Animal Show is fun, exciting and educational. This hands-on show will take place on June 6 at 6 p.m. at the Poland library and is entertaining for children of all ages. Come to the library and meet Ray’s unique animal family. Learning will be fun as you hold and cuddle with these amazing animals. This event is for the entire family.
Italian Fest looking for nominations
The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2019 is seeking nominations for the Italian Man and the Italian Woman of the Year. The nominees would be considered for the highest honor and if selected would be introduced in person at the opening ceremony at 5 p.m. on Aug. 2, in downtown Youngstown. Sign language camp
Students entering first through eighth grades and want to learn a new language or be able to communicate with people who are deaf can attend the sign language camp at the Poland library on June 24 and 25 at 10 a.m. Join in for two mornings of fun, games, activities and crafts while learning sign language and about Deaf culture. The Oakland Center for the Arts presents “Rumpelstiltskin”
The Oakland Center for the Arts Kids’ First Theater Incentive will present the beloved Grimm Brothers’ tale, “Rumpelstiltskin,” adapted and directed by Patricia Fagan at the Poland library on June 11 at 11 a.m. Audience members will help the actors bring the rollicking story to a “happily ever after” ending. This event is for the entire family.
The guardians of the stars and universe
Come to the Poland library’s all things Space Fandom Mashup on June 25 at 6:30 p.m. Do you love Star Wars, Groot, or Steven Universe? Maybe the Lunar Chronicles or Star Trek are more your thing. No matter what your favorite space fandom is, bring your friends and enjoy games, crafts, food and fun at the library. There will be a prize for the best costume so dust off that Stormtrooper helmet or grab your favorite Lightsaber. This event is for teens.
Ladies in Little Black Dresses for Literacy
Join the Literary Society’s annual fundraising event, Ladies in Little Black Dresses for Literacy, which will take place on June 5 at 6 p.m. at The Lake Club, located at 1140 Paulin Road in Poland. Tickets are $45 per person and include appetizers, summer fare and one glass of wine. There will be a cash bar. This event benefits library foundation funds: The Carol A. Bacon Literary Society Fund and the Martha Muransky Children’s Literacy Fund. These boutiques will sell accessories and a portion of the proceeds from participating boutiques will benefit these funds: Suzanne’s, ivory & birch, Matilda Jane Clothing and Possessions. Introduction to French for teens
This class, which will take place on June 5, 12 and 19 at 10 a.m. at the Poland library, is for high school students who anticipate traveling to a French speaking country, taking French in college or simply broadening their horizons. They will cover such areas as meeting people, making small talk, asking for help or directions, shopping, site seeing, ordering food and more. They will learn by using activities, games and role playing. Emphasis will be on listening and speaking in a relaxed, fun atmosphere. Registration is required by calling 330-744-8636. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic set for July 15
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at the Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 15. The cost is $110 per golfer. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The 18-hole four-person scramble will be followed by lunch and a Chinese auction and raffle. Gamblers Anonymous Meetings
If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous may be able to help. Gamblers Anonymous meetings will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting is offered on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one-and-a-half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend.
YSU to offer robotics and 3D printing camps
Youngstown State University’s Ohio Youth Entrepreneurship Program will host two camp programs this summer for students in middle school and high school. Biz3D is a four-day camp where high school students learn about what it takes to start a business and how 3D printing can be used. Students will have hands-on experience with 3D printing and design, learn a computer-aided design program and explore the business, educational and career opportunities and skills of this emerging technology. A field trip to the Youngstown Business Incubator and America Makes is planned. The camp will take place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on June 24-27, at Valley STEM+ME2, located at 7300 Palmyra Road in Canfield. There is no fee, but space is limited and students must register at https://forms.gle/owgCupNyWZtwsziJ9. Learn to build a robot, program it and compete in exciting challenges at the three-day Vex IQ Robotics Camp. This hands-on camp is for upcoming sixth through eighth graders, and robotics experience is not necessary. The camp will take place from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on June 24-26, at Youngstown Business Incubator, located at 29 Vindicator Square in Youngstown. Kindergarten readiness stations
The library’s kindergarten readiness stations are in every library branch and feature fun activities for you and your preschool child to complete together. For the month of May, the stations focus on Approaches Toward Learning — the attitude that children bring to social interactions and learning experiences. The stations will encourage initiative and curiosity. They will also develop the children’s level of attention, engagement and persistence as they complete fun activities. These factors are consistent predictors of academic success. Stop by the Poland branch to visit kindergarten readiness stations and help your child build these important skills.
Trim a tree
Decorate an ornament for our all-seasons trees during Poland library hours for the month of May. This program is for children of all ages.
Summer Discovery Program
Children can sign up online or at any Mahoning County public library on or after May 1, to register for this year’s Summer Discovery Program, A Universe of Stories. Summer Discovery runs from May 1 through July 31. Children can complete activities or read books to earn prizes (while supplies last) and to earn a chance to win a gift card. Children who sign up will receive a Dairy Queen coupon and Mahoning Valley Scrappers game voucher. Children who complete the program by July 24, will be invited to a breakfast event on Aug. 2, featuring author Laura Numeroff. Teens and adults can sign up online at LibraryVisit.org or in person and read 10 books to earn your choice of book. Read 15 books for a chance to win a $25 Amazon gift card. No need to knead
Visit the Poland library at 6 p.m. on May 20, to learn how to make homemade bread without kneading. Sample a finished loaf, and take home a batch of dough to bake at home. Ingredients will be provided, but bring your own mixing bowl and mixing spoon. A food waiver must be signed. Space is limited and registration is recommended. This program is for adults and teens.
Read to Roxie
Visit the Poland library to relax and read to Roxie, a registered therapy dog with Go Team Therapy Dogs at 6 p.m. on May 21. Each child will be given a 15-minute reading session while spots remain. More than a book club
Attendees are invited to gather together at the Poland library to discuss the stories and information they are currently reading and researching at 6 p.m. on May 22. Whether you listen to audiobooks, read novels, read the newspaper or research online, share your sources and learn about others. This program is for adults.
Gotta move story time
Visit the Poland library at 10 a.m. on May 24, for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the young and restless, stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and kids may act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play. This program is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver.
Microsoft Excel class 3
Visit the Poland library at 3 p.m. on May 25, for advanced Microsoft Excel. This class will cover inserting charts and graphs, sorting and continuing work with formulas. Historical society to host day trip
The Poland Historical Society will host a day trip to Pittsburgh on Sept. 18. The itinerary begins when the bus leaves from the Poland Methodist Church, located at 1940 Boardman-Poland Road, at 8:30 a.m., arriving in Pittsburgh at 10 a.m. and includes a visit to the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Garden, lunch at the Schenley Park Caf , followed by a tour of the Frick Art and Historical Center and the Clayton Mansion. The bus will leave Pittsburgh at 5 p.m. for the return trip to Poland. The cost of this fundraiser bus trip is $115 and includes the bus, admissions and lunch. Registration for the trip is due by Aug. 12, but early registration is recommended. Registration forms are available through the Poland Historical Society or can be emailed. Treasures of the Trunk fundraiser to be June 8
The Poland Lions are hosting their fifth annual Treasures of the Trunk Sale on June 8. The event takes place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. in Poland Seminary High School’s stadium parking lot, located at State Route 170 and Dobbins Road. Vendors are being sought for this one day sale. Crafters, home goods, furniture, toys, specialty items and garage sale items are welcome. There is limit of 100 spaces. Cost per space is $15 until May 30. Spaces increase to $20 after May 30. YWCA accepting entries for 37th annual Women’s Art Exhibition
YWCA Mahoning Valley is accepting entries for its 37th Annual Women Artists: A Celebration! Art Show to take place June 28 through July 26 at YWCA’s downtown Youngstown office, located at 25 W. Rayen Ave. The art exhibition showcases work by local, regional and national women artists. The juried show features all media, including paintings, drawings, photographs, fiber art, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, videography and metal work. Returning for a second time is a juried show for young women ages 14-17 from Mahoning and Trumbull counties. The show will feature seventeen works selected by jurors from the YWCA Women Artists Committee and will run in conjunction with the Women Artists show. Two-dimensional work is eligible for the 17 Under 17 show. Entry forms for both shows are available at YWCA’s offices in Youngstown and Warren and on the YWCA’s website at ywcamahoningvalley.org/women-artists. Entries are due by April 8. Priscilla Roggenkamp, Associate Professor of Art at Ashland University, will serve as the juror for the 2019 show. A ticketed Preview Party will take place on June 28 from 6-9 p.m. at the YWCA. PSHS Class of 1969 to reunite on Aug. 3
The Poland High School Class of 1969 will host its 50th class reunion on Aug. 3 at the Reserve Run Golf Course’s Another Round Bar and Grille. Throughout the next few months, former classmates will meet to finalize plans for the evening event along with plans for additional get together activities on Aug. 2 and Aug. 4. The next meeting of the planning committee will take place at 6 p.m. on Feb. 13 at the Little Red Schoolhouse, located at 4515 Center Road in Poland Township. Classmates interested in helping with the reunion are invited to attend the meeting.
