Fourth-grade students at Hilltop Elementary School presented An Evening of Art and Music in honor of the Great State of Ohio on May 9.
The evening featured displays of artwork from each student, under the guidance of Hilltop Art Specialist Diane Leonard, and musical selections under the direction of Hilltop Elementary School Music Specialist Stephanie Summers.
“Welcome kindergartners, first-graders, parents, grandparents and special guests to our Evening of Art and Music afternoon show. Our fourth-grade students have put a lot of time and effort into this show. They also learned how to play the recorder for the show. I’d like to thank our fourth-grade teachers for all their help and, of course, Ms. Summers and Mrs. Goddard for all their hard work,” said Joe Maroni, Hilltop Elementary School principal.
The musical portion of the show was featured selections which honored the state of Ohio, including “The Star Spangled Banner,” “Canoe Song,” “Fifty-Nifty United States,” “Lady of the Harbor,” “Follow the Drinking Gourd,” “Ohio, That’s Where I Belong,” and “Hang on Sloopy,” the state rock song. The students also played the recorder during “Canoe Song” and “Hang on Sloopy.”
In between the musical selections, several students from each class had speaking roles, which focused on Ohio history, such as facts about the Underground Railroad, Native American Indian tribes, Ohio’s natural resources, agricultural importance and crops, the naming of areas of the state, the eight presidents from Ohio, famous Ohioans, such as inventors, actors, athletes and directors and how Ohio became a melting pot of many different cultures.
The students’ featured artwork for the 2018-19 school year including, Getting to Know You Paper Sculptures, Japanese Cherry Blossom Paintings, Coil Pottery - The Pottery Industry of Ohio, Animal Collages and Altered Book Project - Personal Art Journal was displayed in the hallways of the school.
