Public employee meeting set
Public Employee Retirees will meet at 12 p.m. on June 4 at the Avion Banquet Center, located at 2177 Western Reserve Road. Lunch will be served at noon for a cost of $13 for paid members and $15 for others. Updates from the state regarding the proposed changes to the O.P.E.R.S. health/pension benefits will be presented. All public employees and retirees under O.P.E.R.S. may attend the Mahoning County P.E.R.I. Chapter 18 meetings. Meetings are held six times a year to share information and update members regarding legislative changes to the health and pension benefits. The membership fee to join is $10 yearly, and can be paid at the meeting.
Newcomers have last luncheon until fall
The last luncheon for the “fiscal year” for Newcomers of Mahoning Valley will be on May 22 at Johnny’s Restaurant at 11:30 a.m. The installation of officers for 2019-2020 will take place, along with discussion of possible programs starting in September. The birthday group will be meeting on May 21. The next book club meeting will be on June 6 where they will be discussing “Manhattan Beach” by Egan. Newcomers was formed more than 25 years ago to offer those with lifestyle changes an opportunity to meet new people and become acquainted with events and places in the community. Italian Fest looking for nominations
The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2019 is seeking nominations for the Italian Man and the Italian Woman of the Year. The nominees would be considered for the highest honor and if selected would be introduced in person at the opening ceremony at 5 p.m. on Aug. 2, in downtown Youngstown. Immaculate Heart of Mary hosts annual rummage sale
Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, located at 4490 Norquest Boulevard in Austintown, is hosting its annual rummage sale during the Immaculate Heart of Mary festival on June 6-9 from 6-9 p.m. nightly in the parish center. There will be special pricing on Saturday and Sunday.
Immaculate Heart of Mary hosts 5K fun run
The Immaculate Heart of Mary 5K fun run at the Festival will take place on June 6 at 7 p.m. Runners of all experience levels are welcome. The event takes place at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, located at 4490 Norquest Boulevard in Austintown. Registration begins at 5 p.m. on race day and the fee to enter is $10. There will also be a free children’s dash for children ages 10-years and younger, beginning at 7 p.m. with the 5K race at its conclusion. Sheep-shearing and wool-spinning with the Winterberry Homestead
All ages can watch sheep-shearing in the Austintown library on June 12 at 10 a.m. Learn to spin wool on drop spindles, which you can take home along with wool. Seats are limited. The Oakland Center for the Arts presents “Rumpelstiltskin”
The Oakland Center for the Arts Kids’ First Theater Incentive will present the beloved Grimm Brothers’ tale, “Rumpelstiltskin,” adapted and directed by Patricia Fagan at the Austintown library on June 25 at 11 a.m. Audience members will help the actors bring the rollicking story to a “happily ever after” ending. This event is for the entire family.
Bonding with Babies and Books
Bonding with Babies and Books will take place on Tuesdays in June at 10 a.m. at the Austintown library. This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.
Tales and Talk for 2s and 3s
Join the Austintown library on June 5 at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.
Pre-kindergarten story time
This program, which will take place at 10 a.m. on June 7 at the Austintown library, is for 4- and 5-year-olds to help develop pre-literacy and kindergarten readiness skills. They will use books, stories, rhymes, music, movement and crafts to help your child get ready for kindergarten.
Gotta Move story time
This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a care-giver. Join the Austintown library every Thursday in June at 10 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.
Mother Earth and Green Team
Join the Green Team this summer at the Austintown library for a fun and exciting program on June 26 at 10 a.m. Mother Earth herself will be reading the book, “Dear Children of the Earth” by Schim Schimmel. This powerful and dramatically illustrated letter from Mother Earth to her children is a tender reminder of the responsibility we all have to protect the world in which we live. After reading the book we’ll create earth-friendly crafts made from recovered material. At the conclusion of the program, participants will receive Earth-themed coloring books and recycling information to share with their parents. This program is recommended for children in grades pre-K through 5.
Sugar cookie celebration
Help welcome summer vacation and kick off Summer Discovery by decorating sugar cookies with the Austintown library on June 8 at 11 a.m. Children of all ages are welcome to decorate and eat cookies, make a craft and enter to win a copy of Laura Numeroff’s “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie” picture book. Explore the globe with Google Earth
Join the Austintown library on June 14 at 3 p.m. for an interactive tour of the planet using the free Google Earth program. Learn how to navigate the program, look up locations using addresses or coordinates, use Google Street View, take tours, look at stars, find shipwrecks and more. They encourage you to bring your personal computer if you would like to follow along. Space is limited and registration is required. Music festival to take place locally
The Westside Music Festical will take place June 15-16, from 2 p.m. until 2 a.m., at Westside Bowl, located at 2617 Mahoning Ave. in Youngstown. This one-day music festival will feature performances by Frayle, Johnathan Brown, A Moment in Pompeii, Snake Charmer, Hodgie Sev Enteen, Jason Bka J. Howell, Oregon Space Trail of Doom, Suitcase Runaway, Public Squares, Mister, Sierra Madre and The Venus Flytraps. It will showcase artwork by Anakin Skywalk, LashaDey, Ryan Fisher and more. Austintown schools to sponsor summer food program
The Austintown Local School District will again sponsor the summer food service program for children. Free meals will be made available to all children ages 1-18 at the Austintown Elementary School, located at 245 Idaho Road-Lynn Kirk Loop. Meals will be served Monday through Friday from June 3-Aug. 16. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic set for July 15
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at the Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 15. The cost is $110 per golfer. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The 18-hole four-person scramble will be followed by lunch and a Chinese auction and raffle. Gamblers Anonymous Meetings
If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous may be able to help. Gamblers Anonymous meetings will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting is offered on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one-and-a-half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend.

Kindergarten readiness stations
The library’s kindergarten readiness stations are in every library branch and feature fun activities for you and your preschool child to complete together. For the month of May, the stations focus on Approaches Toward Learning — the attitude that children bring to social interactions and learning experiences. The stations will encourage initiative and curiosity. They will also develop the children’s level of attention, engagement and persistence as they complete fun activities. These factors are consistent predictors of academic success. Stop by the Austintown branch to visit kindergarten readiness stations and help your child build these important skills.
Summer Discovery Program
Children can sign up online or at any Mahoning County public library on or after May 1, to register for this year’s Summer Discovery Program, A Universe of Stories. Summer Discovery runs from May 1 through July 31. Children can complete activities or read books to earn prizes (while supplies last) and to earn a chance to win a gift card. Children who sign up will receive a Dairy Queen coupon and Mahoning Valley Scrappers game voucher. Children who complete the program by July 24, will be invited to a breakfast event on Aug. 2, featuring author Laura Numeroff. Teens and adults can sign up online at LibraryVisit.org or in person and read 10 books to earn your choice of book. Read 15 books for a chance to win a $25 Amazon gift card. Using city directories for family histories
Visit the Austintown library at 6:30 p.m. on May 23, to learn about how to use city directories to locate people in time and place. City directories are often overlooked, but these texts prove quite useful to family historians. Ancestors are listed regardless of whether they owned a telephone. Streets and maps are shown, along with the names of neighbors. Churches, cemeteries, business, advertisements and historical information are presented over the span of many years. Movie night

Fitch academic team qualifies for nationals
The Austintown Fitch High School Academic Team qualified for the 2019 NAQT High School National Championship Tournament for their performance in the Mahoning County League, where they placed seventh. The quiz bowl championship, powered by LetterOne, will be May 24-26 in Atlanta, Ga.
Treasures of the Trunk fundraiser to be June 8
The Poland Lions are hosting their fifth annual Treasures of the Trunk Sale on June 8. The event takes place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. in Poland Seminary High School’s stadium parking lot, located at State Route 170 and Dobbins Road. Vendors are being sought for this one day sale. Crafters, home goods, furniture, toys, specialty items and garage sale items are welcome. There is limit of 100 spaces. Cost per space is $15 until May 30. Spaces increase to $20 after May 30. YWCA accepting entries for 37th annual Women’s Art Exhibition
YWCA Mahoning Valley is accepting entries for its 37th Annual Women Artists: A Celebration! Art Show to take place June 28 through July 26 at YWCA’s downtown Youngstown office, located at 25 W. Rayen Ave. The art exhibition showcases work by local, regional and national women artists. The juried show features all media, including paintings, drawings, photographs, fiber art, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, videography and metal work. Returning for a second time is a juried show for young women ages 14-17 from Mahoning and Trumbull counties. The show will feature seventeen works selected by jurors from the YWCA Women Artists Committee and will run in conjunction with the Women Artists show. Two-dimensional work is eligible for the 17 Under 17 show. Entry forms for both shows are available at YWCA’s offices in Youngstown and Warren and on the YWCA’s website at ywcamahoningvalley.org/women-artists. Entries are due by April 8. Priscilla Roggenkamp, Associate Professor of Art at Ashland University, will serve as the juror for the 2019 show. A ticketed Preview Party will take place on June 28 from 6-9 p.m. at the YWCA.
