YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown Torch Club will sponsor a presentation on steel heritage preservation at 5:30 p.m. May 20 at Chick-Fil-A in Kilcawley Center on Youngstown State University’s campus. The program will feature Dr. Thomas E. Leary, a professor in YSU’s history department, whose talk, “Preserving Steel’s Heritage,” will describe ways in which deindustrialized communities remember their industrial past. The author of numerous articles on deindustrialization, Dr. Leary is a member of the management team of the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor. His presentation will draw on personal experiences in the field of steel heritage preservation, including projects in Pittsburgh, Johnstown, Pa., and Youngstown. The Youngstown Torch Club, which was chartered in January 1927, is an organization of professional people who gather once a month to listen to a paper presentation, while enjoying dinner, fellowship and conversation. Historical society will host author today

SALEM

The Salem Historical Society will present Jane Ann Turzillo, award-winning author, as the guest speaker at 7 p.m. today in the meeting room at the Dale Shaffer Library, 239 S. Lundy, with parking available in The Timberlane’s parking lot. Turzillo will discuss her book, “Wicked Women of Northeast Ohio,” with stories of the first female sheriff who solved a double murder, madams who tried to pay off police and more. Survivors of Suicide Walk scheduled

The 12th annual Survivors of Suicide Awareness Walk, a walk in memory of loved ones who died by suicide, will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Trumbull County Courthouse Gazebo, Courthouse Square. Attendees are encouraged to bring photos or signs to highlight the loss of loved ones to suicide. Names of those who have died will be read.

Cystic fibrosis walk planned Sunday

The Northern Ohio Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation will host its 20th annual Mahoning/Trumbull Great Strides walk as part of the largest national event to raise funds and awareness for cystic fibrosis, a rare genetic disease that progressively limits the ability to breathe and ultimately causes premature death.

The walk will take place Sunday at Masters Pavilion in Boardman Park. In 2018, the foundation spent an estimated $188 million to uncover new treatments for CF and to support the delivery of high-quality, specialized care for people with the disease – the most in the organization’s history. This year, the foundation hopes to raise $37 million through Great Strides to help advance its mission to find a cure.
