YSU’s Birkbeck on All-Tournament team

Youngstown State junior Elizabeth Birkbeck was named to the 2019 Horizon League All-Tournament Team, the league announced.

Birkbeck batted .500 with a pair of home runs, three runs batted in and two runs scored. She also posted a slugging percentage of 2.000 and an on-base percentage of .750.

Birkbeck hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning against Oakland to give the Penguins a 2-0 lead and tied the game at 4-4 with a solo blast in the bottom of the 13th inning.

She is the seventh YSU player since 2016 to earn Horizon League All-Tournament accolades.

Tinkey wins top conference honor

COLUMBUS

Mount Union seniors Rachel Tinkey and Louis Berry IV were awarded the Ohio Athletic Conference’s Clyde Lamb Awards at the conference’s awards dinner on Monday.

The Clyde Lamb Awards are given to the top male and female scholar athletes at each of the OAC’s 10 institutions.

Tinkey, a Canfield High School graduate, played in 101 women’s basketball games over the last four seasons and became the 16th player in school history to score more than 1,000 career points as she had 1,072 points.

As a freshman, the Raiders won the OAC Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. She was a two-time All-OAC selection with second team honors in 2018 and first team accolades in 2019.

Off the court, the three-time Academic All-OAC selection had a 3.59 grade point average as a chemistry major.

She won two Mount Union awards the 2018 Alumni Chemistry Award and 2019 Pappenhagen Prize for outstanding work in chemistry.

Berry excelled in three sports for the Purple Raiders — football, indoor and outdoor track and field but also in the classroom as a marketing major with a 3.53 grade point average and a two-time Academic All-OAC selection.

Goodall named to All-OAC team

AUSTINTOWN

Mount Union seniors Billy Goodall, Phil Mary and Bryant Kennedy have been named to the 2019 All-Ohio Athletic Conference Baseball teams.

Goodall, a South Range graduate, was the Purple Raiders top hitter with 49 hits and 34 runs batted in while he was second in the conference with 30 stolen bases on his was to All-OAC First Team honors.

Goodall has been named all-conference for each of the last four seasons — first team in 2017 and 2019 and second team in 2016 and 2018.

Mount Union’s career leader in hits (213) and stolen bases (86) was also the OAC Player of the Year in 2017.

Mary was a first team selection at pitcher who went 5-1 overall and was second in the conference in strikeouts with 78 and third in earned run average at 1.95.

Kennedy played third base and hit .358 with 38 hits and 29 runs batted in to make All-OAC honorable mention.

Judge blocks use of Kraft video

WEST PALM BEACH, FLA.

A Florida judge has blocked prosecutors from using video that allegedly shows New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft engaging in paid sex at a massage parlor.

Judge Leonard Hanser ruled Monday that Jupiter police did not follow proper procedures after installing the hidden cameras that secretly recorded Kraft visiting the Orchids of Asia Day Spa twice in January.

Hanser wrote that detectives did not do enough to minimize the invasion of privacy of customers who did not commit crimes.

Prosecutors argued during a recent hearing that the warrant obtained to install the cameras was legal and aimed at stopping a felony-level prostitution operation. They are expected to appeal.

The 77-year-old Kraft has pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor solicitation of a prostitute.
