HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS AT A GLANCE

RAINOUTS

Mother Nature was the big winner Monday in the Mahoning Valley with just about every tournament baseball and softball game postponed because of extremely wet conditions.

The postponements have created one busy schedule today as all four divisions for both sports have games scheduled.

In softball, the Division I district tournament has Boardman playing Hudson at 4 p.m. and Austintown Fitch playing Solon after the first semifinal. The district final is scheduled Wednesday.

In Div. IV, two Mahoning Valley districts have rescheduled semifinals. At Jackson-Milton, Lisbon faces East Canton and McDonald plays East Palestine. At Candlelite Knolls in Bazetta Township, Mathews will play Brookfield and Bristol takes on Badger.

In Div. III, defending state champion Champion won’t play its first game until Wednesday. That’s because Monday’s Conneaut/Wickliffe sectional final will be played today.

Baseball’s first day of tournament play was all but wiped out. Five Div. II sectional semifinals are on tap. In Div. III, six games were rescheduled.

The sectional finals remain on Wednesday’s schedule.

COMMITMENT

United High School senior Loren Swords will continue her soccer and academic career at John Jay College in New York City. A four-year letter-winner, she will graduate with the United record for career assists. Sara Hodgson, United’s head coach, says Swords is “one of the most hard-working and humble players I am grateful to have had as a student-athlete.”
