In honor of Mother’s Day, the Salem Historical Society museum, 208 S. Broadway, will offer free admission to mothers Sunday, when accompanied by a family member. Local woman named Inspiring Teacher

This year’s winner of Great Clips’ Most Inspiring Teacher award is Leah Condon of Jackson Milton High School. This annual competition encourages students to submit nominations in any visual or written format they choose wherein they state how a teacher has, through his or her words and actions, inspired the student to “greatness” outside of the classroom. This annual project is offered to any district in which The 220 Group, Ltd., a Great Clips Franchisee, does business in the area (Austintown, Canfield, Liberty and Salem). Condon will be recognized during an assembly Monday and will receive a plaque. Condon’s class also will receive an in-school pizza party courtesy of Gionino’s Pizza, and the school district will receive a $500 check from Great Clips of Austintown/The 220 Group, Ltd. The student who submitted the essay, Ashley Cameron, will receive a $50 cash award.

Fibromyalgia program at library

The program “Understanding Fibromyalgia: A Holistic Approach to Chronic Pain” will be presented by Dr. Denise Carradine at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Quaker Meeting Room of Salem Public Library, 821 E. State St. Various natural ways to help alleviate fibromyalgia symptoms will be presented. A question-and-answer session will follow. NCNW to host Women of Distinction

The Youngstown Section of the National Council of Negro Women Inc. will host its seventh annual Women of Distinction Luncheon at 11 a.m. May 25 at the Holiday Inn, 7410 South Ave. The luncheon takes place to honor women who demonstrate the values of Mary McLeod Bethune, who founded NCNW in 1935, and Dorothy Height, former NCNW president, in serving the community.

The theme will be “Celebrating Women of Color in Medicine.” Honorees are Dr. Tonia Farmer and Jessica Robinson, R.N., and the speaker will be Christine Snipes, doctor of physical therapy. Struthers to host ‘Evening with Arts’

The public is invited to “An Evening with the Arts” from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Struthers High School, 111 Euclid Ave. The event will include musical selections performed by the middle- and high-school bands and choirs as well as displays of artwork created by students from each building. The Spanish and French clubs arranged cultural displays, and the robotics and digital media programs will offer demonstrations. Snacks and beverages will be available for purchase. This is the second year for this free event, which is presented by the Struthers City Schools Fine & Performing Arts Department.

‘Bites and Bits’ guest will be Rich Morgan

The Mahoning County Historical Society will host its Bites and Bits of History lunch program at noon Thursday at the Tyler History Center, 325 W. Federal St. The guest speaker will be Rich Morgan, retired broadcaster, and will include a questions and memories session. He will share memories of his time with the “Money Movie” and “First News This Morning” at 27 WKBN-TV.

Pilot to speak at gathering

Retired captain Nick Pacalo will share his experiences of piloting a C-130 (cargo) plane to various bases when he addresses the World War II Heritage Group at 6:15 p.m. May 20 at A La Carte Catering, 429 Lisbon St. The speech will be preceded by a buffet dinner, which will cost $14 per person. Church to host rummage sale

Good Hope Lutheran Church, 98 Homestead Drive, will host a rummage sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Proceeds will benefit the Relay for Life team. There will be food available which includes homemade soup by the quart, sloppy joes, hot dogs and baked goods.
