Students from Boardman Glenwood Junior High School Skyped with members of the Pa Dang Ngan village in Thailand on March 27.
Lamun Smith, wife of principal Bart Smith and Thailand native, translated for both groups throughout the interaction.
“They have a relationship with that village that continues to grow,” said Amy Radinovic, community specialist.
Students were able to make this connection thanks to a Turning Foundation grant for $5,000.
Teachers Tim Harker, Carrie Hurd and Chelsea Wisbar received the grant in October for the project.
“It’s a great opportunity, and the students very much enjoy working on it,” Harker said.
He explained that the students are working on creating web sites to address issues faced by students in rural Thailand.
Radinovic said that this project was a way for students to learn first hand about the problems they are trying to address.
“It’s a cross cultural project that is really important to the students and teachers,” Radinovic said.
Thailand students chose three issues from the 17 United Nations substantial goals list that were most relevant. The students chose zero hunger, poverty and good health and wellness for Boardman students to address.
“We don’t often get to interact directly with people in other countries so this is a very cool opportunity for students,” Radinovic said.
