Knitting guild to meet on May 14
The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will meet on May 14 at 7 p.m. at the Rotary Community Building in Fair Park in Canfield. Marty Largent will demonstrate yarn overs. To participate, bring yarn with the appropriate size needles. Officer positions for the upcoming 2019-2020 year are now open. Barone honored with art award
Canfield High School sophomore Hannah Barone’s artwork was chosen to appear on WRTA buses in the area for the months of April and May. Barone’s artwork won the Jet Creative-sponsored category on painting something you are supremely passionate about. Power of The Arts organized the contest with the help of several sponsors. Barone, along with other winning artists, was honored at a reception at the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County on April 11.
Canfield High School ranked 41 in Ohio
“U.S. News & World Report” ranked more than 17,000 schools this year and Canfield High School is ranked 41st in Ohio, out of 916 high schools. Canfield is 18th in northeastern Ohio. The rankings are calculated differently than state success standards. The high school rankings are based on six factors, each weighted: college readiness, using participation and performance on AP and IB tests, 30 percent; reading and math proficiency, 20 percent; reading and math performance, 20 percent; underserved student performance, 10 percent; college curriculum breadth, 10 percent and graduation rate, 10 percent. All ranking data is compiled from “U.S. News & World Report” and is from the most recent Ohio School Report Card. On the 2017-18 State Report Card, the Canfield Local School District was the highest in the tri-county area for performance index, scoring 104.3. The Performance Index measures the test results of every student at their own ability level. The report card also measures financial data. The Canfield Local School District spends 70.5 percent of its funds on classroom instruction. This amounts to a cost per pupil expenditure of $8,713, while the state average is $9,149.
Lord of Life to host May Gathering Place at library
The Lord of Life Church will host its May Gathering Place from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. on May 13, at the Canfield library. The Gathering Place is a free community outreach social program offered to all senior citizens, which takes place on the second Monday of each month. OSU Extension offers Good Natured Garden Partners program
With the Good Natured Garden Partners program, OSU Extension aims to teach children all about gardening and how their food is produced. Participation in the Good Natured Garden Partners program is based off a team structure. A Growing Team may be formed by any group of children, and must be led by an adult volunteer(s). The adult volunteer will fill out a volunteer form in order to receive free seeds and plants for their group, which will then plant a garden and compete for prizes and recognition at the end of summer. Throughout the summer, teams will attend the gardening kick-off event May 27, and are required to attend at least two other gardening events. A garden party on Aug. 12, will wrap up the summer with fellowship, fun and a chance to win prizes for best garden displays, garden harvest and more. Registration deadline is May 17. Trammel received Outstanding Cadet Award
Justin Trammel received the Outstanding Cadet Award fro Mahoning Valley Sons of the American Revolution from Chapter President John Opre at their awards ceremony on April 26. The Outstanding Cadet award is given “For demonstrating superior leadership abilities, Military Bearing and overall academic excellence. This Outstanding Cadet exemplifies the high ideals and principles which motivated and sustained our patriot ancestors.” Master Sergeant, Douglas Moon, selected Trammel and has high expectations for his continued leadership and academic success.

Pink Ribbon Golf Classic set for July 15
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at the Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 15. The cost is $110 per golfer. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The 18-hole four-person scramble will be followed by lunch and a Chinese auction and raffle. Italian Fest looking for nominations
The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2019 is seeking nominations for the Italian Man and Italian Woman of the Year. Flower show and dinner to be May 15

American Business Women’s Association to meet May 14
The Mill Creek Chapter of American Business Women’s Association will hold its May 14 meeting at A La Cart Catering in Canfield. Networking will begin at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu will include creamed chicken over biscuit, stuffed pork chop, mashed potatoes, California blend vegetables, tossed salad, applesauce, Jell-O, dessert, coffee and tea. Gamblers Anonymous Meetings
If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous may be able to help. Gamblers Anonymous meetings will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting is offered on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one-and-a-half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend.
Ursuline Education and Wellness Center announces guided labyrinth walks
The Ursuline Education and Wellness Center, located at 4280 Shields Road, recently began its 2019 Guided Labyrinth Walk season. This year’s themes celebrate aspects of compassion, a virtue central to the ministry of St. Angela Merici, who founded the Ursuline order in 1535. All persons of faith are invited to participate in these free, weather-permitting events. Walks generally take 20-30 minutes. The themes by date are May 16 at 6:30 p.m. - “Compassion for yourself;” June 20 at 6:30 p.m. - “The gift of empathy;” July 18 at 6:30 p.m. - “Mindfulness – how little we know;” Aug. 15 at 6:30 p.m. - “How should we speak to one another;” Sept. 12 at 6:30 p.m. - “Knowledge, recognition and action” and Oct. 13 at 2 p.m. - “Love your enemies.” A presentation on the history of labyrinths precedes this walk. The labyrinth is open year-round from dawn to dusk for all persons of faith. There is no cost to use the labyrinth, which is accessible for different physical abilities and offers ample parking. Printed guides are provided at the labyrinth’s entrance giving suggestions for following the path, but there is no right or wrong way to experience the sacred walk. The library’s kindergarten readiness stations are in every library branch and feature fun activities for you and your preschool child to complete together. For the month of May, the stations focus on Approaches Toward Learning — the attitude that children bring to social interactions and learning experiences. The stations will encourage initiative and curiosity. They will also develop the children’s level of attention, engagement and persistence as they complete fun activities. These factors are consistent predictors of academic success. Stop by the Canfield branch to visit kindergarten readiness stations and help your child build these important skills.

Summer Discovery Program
Children can sign up online or at any Mahoning County public library on or after May 1, to register for this year’s Summer Discovery Program, A Universe of Stories. Summer Discovery runs from May 1 through July 31. Children can complete activities or read books to earn prizes (while supplies last) and to earn a chance to win a gift card. Children who sign up will receive a Dairy Queen coupon and Mahoning Valley Scrappers game voucher. Children who complete the program by July 24, will be invited to a breakfast event on Aug. 2, featuring author Laura Numeroff. Adults and kids may act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play. This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver.

Visit the Canfield library for Friends of PLYMC chair yoga at 10 a.m. every Friday in May. Class is $10 a session and attendees can pay as they attend. This program is for adults.

Spring tea fundraiser
The Friends of the Library Canfield Committee will host a Spring Tea featuring James McClellan, vocalist, and Tyler Guerrieri, guitarist. They will present “Two on a Song,” a selection of pop, standards and show tunes. The tea will begin at 2 p.m. on May 19, at the Canfield library; doors will open at 1:30 p.m. Proceeds are used to benefit children’s programming at the library. Tea sandwiches and sweets will be served with the tea, catered by A La Cart. There will be a basket raffle and 50/50. Tickets are $30 per person. YSU to offer robotics and 3D printing camps
Youngstown State University’s Ohio Youth Entrepreneurship Program will host two camp programs this summer for students in middle school and high school. Biz3D is a four-day camp where high school students learn about what it takes to start a business and how 3D printing can be used. Students will have hands-on experience with 3D printing and design, learn a computer-aided design program and explore the business, educational and career opportunities and skills of this emerging technology. A field trip to the Youngstown Business Incubator and America Makes is planned. The camp will take place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on June 24-27, at Valley STEM+ME2, located at 7300 Palmyra Road in Canfield. Learn to build a robot, program it and compete in exciting challenges at the three-day Vex IQ Robotics Camp. This hands-on camp is for upcoming sixth through eighth graders, and robotics experience is not necessary. Friendly Squares May square dance
The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on May 11 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be cuing line dances. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. Treasures of the Trunk fundraiser to be June 8
The Poland Lions are hosting their fifth annual Treasures of the Trunk Sale on June 8. The event takes place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. in Poland Seminary High School’s stadium parking lot, located at State Route 170 and Dobbins Road. Vendors are being sought for this one day sale. Crafters, home goods, furniture, toys, specialty items and garage sale items are welcome. There is limit of 100 spaces. Cost per space is $15 until May 30. Spaces increase to $20 after May 30. Spring getaway bus trip fundraiser
There will be a spring getaway bus trip fundraiser sponsored by the Pink Ribbon Golf Classic Committee with proceeds given to the American Cancer Society to The Rivers in Pittsburgh on May 11. The cost is $30 per person, $10 play and $5 food coupon from the casino. There is no guarantee the casino will pay these exact perks. The bus will leave Fab Limo, at 3681 Connecticut Avenue in Austintown, at 9 a.m. and will leave from The Rivers at 5 p.m. and arrive back at Fab Limo by 6:30 p.m. The deadline for reservations is May 9. YWCA accepting entries for 37th annual Women’s Art Exhibition
YWCA Mahoning Valley is accepting entries for its 37th Annual Women Artists: A Celebration! Art Show to take place June 28 through July 26 at YWCA’s downtown Youngstown office, located at 25 W. Rayen Ave. The art exhibition showcases work by local, regional and national women artists. The juried show features all media, including paintings, drawings, photographs, fiber art, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, videography and metal work. Returning for a second time is a juried show for young women ages 14-17 from Mahoning and Trumbull counties. The show will feature seventeen works selected by jurors from the YWCA Women Artists Committee and will run in conjunction with the Women Artists show. Two-dimensional work is eligible for the 17 Under 17 show. Entry forms for both shows are available at YWCA’s offices in Youngstown and Warren and on the YWCA’s website at ywcamahoningvalley.org/women-artists. Entries are due by April 8. Priscilla Roggenkamp, Associate Professor of Art at Ashland University, will serve as the juror for the 2019 show. A ticketed Preview Party will take place on June 28 from 6-9 p.m. at the YWCA. Volunteers needed for fine arts show
A juried fine arts show is being planned for August in Canfield and organizers are looking for additional help. Arts on the Commons is planned for Aug. 3-10. The committee is searching for enthusiastic, organized individuals, whether or not they have a background in fine arts. Arts on the Commons will be soliciting nationally for entrants for the show. Dr. Lou Zona, director of the Butler Institute of American Art, has agreed to be the juror and Nils Johnson has pledged the initial funds for prizes through the Johnson Foundation.
