Secure drug disposal now offered at Akron Children’s in Boardman
Akron Children’s Hospital is now collecting unused prescription medications in a secure dropbox at the Beeghly Campus in Boardman. The hospital recently installed the collection box that is part of the LifeInCheck Consumer Drug Take-Back program. It’s located at 6505 Market St. in the lobby of Building A. While many communities participate in annual drug collection events, having the receptacle available permanently will allow Akron Children’s to provide the public with an easily accessible site to dispose of unwanted prescription and over-the-counter medications. Accepted in the dropbox are unused or expired prescription and over-the-counter medications and pet medications. Not accepted are illegal drugs, inhalers, needles, liquids and lotions. Society for Human Resource Management to meet May 14
The Western Reserve Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management will meet on May 14 at Holiday Inn Boardman, located at 7410 South Ave. in Boardman. Registration and lunch is from 11:30 a.m. until 12 p.m. and the presentation will run from 12-1 p.m. The presentation, “Strategic HR Practices,” will focus on how to structure performance based compensation, how to build a high performing health plan and the evolution of Human Resources in an ever changing benefits marketplace. BHS ranks among top Ohio high schools
Boardman High School is once again ranked as a top high school in the state of Ohio, according to the just released rankings by “U.S. News & World Report.” The Silver Medal Status considers college readiness, graduation rates, AP testing and proficiency scores, among other factors. At number 54 this year, Boardman High School continues to be recognized as a high performing high school. This year, “US News” surveyed more than 900 public high schools in Ohio. The rankings are based on students who perform better than expected in their state, as well as disadvantaged students who perform better than the state average. Weight is also given to student graduation rates that meet or exceed a national standard, and how well students are prepared for college level work.
Trammel received Outstanding Cadet Award
Justin Trammel received the Outstanding Cadet Award fro Mahoning Valley Sons of the American Revolution from Chapter President John Opre at their awards ceremony on April 26. The Outstanding Cadet award is given “For demonstrating superior leadership abilities, Military Bearing and overall academic excellence. This Outstanding Cadet exemplifies the high ideals and principles which motivated and sustained our patriot ancestors.” Master Sergeant, Douglas Moon, selected Trammel and has high expectations for his continued leadership and academic success.
Pink Ribbon Golf Classic set for July 15
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at the Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 15. The cost is $110 per golfer. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The 18-hole four-person scramble will be followed by lunch and a Chinese auction and raffle. Italian Fest looking for nominations
The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2019 is seeking nominations for the Italian Man and Italian Woman of the Year. The nominees would be considered for the highest honor and if selected would be introduced in person at the festival opening ceremony at 5 p.m. on Aug. 2, in downtown Youngstown. I Can Ride Bike Camp set for June 10-14
The Down Syndrome Association of the Valley will host its sixth annual I Can Ride Bike Camp the week of June 10–14, at Boardman Glenwood Middle School in Boardman. Persons with challenges can learn to ride a two-wheeled bicycle in one week using patented adaptive equipment through the nationally recognized iCAN Bike program. Participants can register at dsav.org. Down Syndrome Association of the Valley fundraisers pay for the bulk of the costs to bring I Can Bike to the area, leaving members to contribute $50 to participate per person, while non–members pay $75 per person. High school and college student volunteers are needed and must complete volunteer registration via dsav.org.
Boardman schools to present band concerts
Boardman Glenwood Junior High and Center Intermediate Schools will present a spring band concerts on May 30. The fifth-grade, sixth-grade and seventh-grade band spring concert is May 30 at 7 p.m. in the Boardman High School Performing Arts Center. The eighth-grade jazz ensemble is directed by high school band director Thomas Ruggieri. Several students will be featured on improvisation solos in various musical styles. Admission and donations accepted at the door. Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for students and free for senior citizens.

All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed on May 12 and May 26-27.
American Business Women’s Association to meet May 14
The Mill Creek Chapter of American Business Women’s Association will hold its May 14 meeting at A La Cart Catering in Canfield. Networking will begin at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu will include creamed chicken over biscuit, stuffed pork chop, mashed potatoes, California blend vegetables, tossed salad, applesauce, Jell-O, dessert, coffee and tea. Gamblers Anonymous Meetings
If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous may be able to help. Gamblers Anonymous meetings will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting is offered on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one-and-a-half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend.
Boardman Historical Society to sponsor on May 11 discussion
Mark Luke will present “The History of Memorial Day” on May 11 at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library. The event is sponsored by the Boardman Historical Society and is free to the public. For information, contact Deborah Liptak at 330-740-6086. The lecture will discuss what Memorial Day is, who started it and when. Luke, a graduate of Boardman High School and longtime resident of the township, is the director of the Mahoning Valley Mediation Services. He is secretary of the Boardman Civic Association and an officer of the Boardman Community Foundation. He has served the Boardman Kiwanis in many capacities and for fourteen years has been the master of ceremonies for the Boardman Kiwanis Memorial Day Service. The Boardman Historical Society meets on the second Saturday of each month from September through May at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library for a lecture on some aspect of local history. Visitors, new members and guests are welcome.
Kindergarten readiness stations
The library’s kindergarten readiness stations are in every library branch and feature fun activities for you and your preschool child to complete together. For the month of May, the stations focus on Approaches Toward Learning — the attitude that children bring to social interactions and learning experiences. The stations will encourage initiative and curiosity. They will also develop the children’s level of attention, engagement and persistence as they complete fun activities. These factors are consistent predictors of academic success. Stop by the Boardman branch to visit kindergarten readiness stations and help your child build these important skills.
Summer Discovery Program
Children can sign up online or at any Mahoning County public library on or after May 1, to register for this year’s Summer Discovery Program, A Universe of Stories. Summer Discovery runs from May 1 through July 31. Children can complete activities or read books to earn prizes (while supplies last) and to earn a chance to win a gift card. Children who sign up will receive a Dairy Queen coupon and Mahoning Valley Scrappers game voucher. Children who complete the program by July 24, will be invited to a breakfast event on Aug. 2, featuring author Laura Numeroff. Oral history and the conveyance of experience
Visit the Boardman library from 6:30-8:30 p.m. May 30, to learn about oral history. Oral history is a first-person narrative that preserves a portrait of experiences and interpretations of events. Oral accounts provide eyewitness testimony, offering a richer description of the past, to teach us what has changed and what has stayed the same. Historical documents alone do not provide a full spectrum of knowledge.Oral history is the place to discover personal stories and truths that have been untold or forgotten. During this program,oral history resources will be examined and the best practices for conducting effective interviews will be discussed. YSU to offer robotics and 3D printing camps
Youngstown State University’s Ohio Youth Entrepreneurship Program will host two camp programs this summer for students in middle school and high school. Biz3D is a four-day camp where high school students learn about what it takes to start a business and how 3D printing can be used. Students will have hands-on experience with 3D printing and design, learn a computer-aided design program and explore the business, educational and career opportunities and skills of this emerging technology. A field trip to the Youngstown Business Incubator and America Makes is planned. The camp will take place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on June 24-27, at Valley STEM+ME2, located at 7300 Palmyra Road in Canfield. Learn to build a robot, program it and compete in exciting challenges at the three-day Vex IQ Robotics Camp. Friendly Squares May square dance
The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on May 11 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be cuing line dances. The Poland Lions are hosting their fifth annual Treasures of the Trunk Sale on June 8. There will be a spring getaway bus trip fundraiser sponsored by the Pink Ribbon Golf Classic Committee with proceeds given to the American Cancer Society to The Rivers in Pittsburgh on May 11. The cost is $30 per person, $10 play and $5 food coupon from the casino. There is no guarantee the casino will pay these exact perks. YWCA accepting entries for 37th annual Women’s Art Exhibition
YWCA Mahoning Valley is accepting entries for its 37th Annual Women Artists: A Celebration! Art Show to take place June 28 through July 26 at YWCA’s downtown Youngstown office, located at 25 W. Rayen Ave. The art exhibition showcases work by local, regional and national women artists. The juried show features all media, including paintings, drawings, photographs, fiber art, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, videography and metal work. Returning for a second time is a juried show for young women ages 14-17 from Mahoning and Trumbull counties. The show will feature seventeen works selected by jurors from the YWCA Women Artists Committee and will run in conjunction with the Women Artists show. Two-dimensional work is eligible for the 17 Under 17 show. Entry forms for both shows are available at YWCA’s offices in Youngstown and Warren and on the YWCA’s website at ywcamahoningvalley.org/women-artists. Entries are due by April 8. Priscilla Roggenkamp, Associate Professor of Art at Ashland University, will serve as the juror for the 2019 show. A ticketed Preview Party will take place on June 28 from 6-9 p.m. at the YWCA.
