Scrappers announce Stevens tribute jersey
NILES
The Mahoning Valley Scrappers have announced the second of three specialty jerseys the team will wear during the 2019 season.
On Friday, June 21 the Scrappers will wear jerseys on field paying tribute to local legend Harry Stevens. The jerseys were designed by local artist Rick Muccio.
The game will feature promotions and contests paying tribute to Stevens and his contributions to baseball. The first 1,000 fans will receive a commemorative print created by Muccio. Fireworks will follow the game.
Stevens credited with the invention of the hot dog in 1901, was born in England and came to Niles in 1880. The home he built still stands at the corner of Robbins and North Crandon avenues near the entrance to Stevens Park, which his family donated to Niles.
The jerseys will be auctioned off the night of the game in a silent auction and through the app, LiveSource.
Proceeds will benefit The Avenue and Main, coordinators of Harry Stevens Hot Dog Day, which is held annually in downtown Niles. The event features music, entertainment, a dachshund race and of course, a hot dog-eating contest. This year’s event is June 30.
Tickets for June 21 game are on sale now and can be purchased by calling 330-505-0000, visiting the box office or at mvscrappers.com.
