‘A Night of Bingo’ set for Sunday

St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church and GCU Lodge 164 will host “A Night of Bingo” fundraiser Sunday at St. Mary Assumption Center, 356 S. Belle Vista Ave. Doors will open at 4 and bingo will begin at 6:45. Proceeds will benefit Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley, Our Community Kitchen and Veterans Outreach program.

Memorial service to take place May 21

BROOKFIELD

Brookfield Township firefighters, auxiliary members and police will host a memorial service at 7 p.m. May 21 at the fire hall, 774 state Route 7 North, in honor of deceased members. Refreshments will follow the service. A light supper will take place at 6 for members and their guests. Library will host local historian

The Lepper Library, 303 E. Lilncoln Way, will host local historian Timothy R. Brookes of East Liverpool at 6 p.m. May 16. Festival seeks volunteers

The 21st annual YSU Summer Festival of the Arts, scheduled for July 13 and 14 at and around Youngstown State University, is seeking volunteers. Volunteers are needed for artist registration, information booths, in the children’s hands-on art tent, for technical assistance at performance sites and at the Festival of Nations international area, among others. Various shifts are available for the two-day event. Each volunteer receives a newly designed festival T-shirt, cold water and reserved free parking. Those needing service hours logged, such as that for National Honor Society, sorority or fraternity service, may also participate. Service verification forms will be completed. Simply Slavic seeks vendors for event

In preparation for the ninth annual Simply Slavic festival, which will take place from noon to midnight June 15 on Federal Plaza East, organizers are seeking authentically Slavic retail, craft, fine art and food vendors for its marketplace and food tents. Simply Slavic has vending space for 15 food vendors and 10 marketplace vendors, who will provide a variety of merchandise and foods for patrons. Kiwanis to host holiday parade

BOARDMAN

The Boardman Kiwanis will host its 115th Memorial Day Parade and Service on May 27. Groups participating in the parade will assemble at 9:30 a.m. at Boardman Center Intermediate School, 7410 Market St., and the parade will begin at 10. The parade follows Market Street to Boardman-Poland Road and then to Boardman Park. Lt. Col. Christopher Dobozy, command inspector general of the 352nd Civil Affairs Command in Fort Meade, Md., and Bronze Star recipient, will be the Grand Marshall and special speaker. New dean announced

ATHENS

An emergency-medicine physician and alumna of the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine will become the new dean of the college’s Athens campus effective June 1. Beth A. Longenecker, D.O. , who was chosen from three finalists to fill the position, is currently associate dean for clinical education and assistant professor of emergency medicine at Midwestern University’s Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in musicology with a minor in piano performance from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1987, Longenecker began her medical training the same year. She was board certified in emergency medicine in 2000. Prior to her associate deanship at Midwestern, she served from 2013-15 as associate dean for clinical sciences at William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine. From 2002 to 2012, Longenecker was program director successively for two emergency medicine residency programs, St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx, N.Y., from 2002-05, followed by Mount Sinai Medical Center and the Miami Heart Institute in Miami Beach, Fla.

Gold medal winner in art competition

Jackson Milton High School senior David Vega recently was awarded a National Gold Medal in the Scholastic Art Competition. He will receive the gold medal June 6 at Carnegie Hall in New York City, and his art will travel with other finalists’ nationally for two years. He also will be published in the 2019 Best Teen Art Scholastic art book.

Nominations needed for Italian Fest

The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2019 is seeking nominations for the Italian man and Italian woman of the year. Nominees will be introduced at the opening of the festival at 5 p.m. Aug. 2, downtown.
