Chadwick wins first W series race

HOCKENHEIM, Germany

British driver Jamie Chadwick won the inaugural race of the new all-female W Series at Hockenheim, Germany, on Saturday.

The 20-year-old Chadwick, who was fastest in both practice sessions, beat out compatriot Alice Powell, and Marta Garcia of Spain was third.

Chadwick, who was already the first woman to win a British GT championship and the first to win a British Formula 3 championship race, did not have an ideal start on the Hockenheimring as she lost the lead on the first lap when she ran wide at the hairpin. Then the safety car was out after an incident involving Megan Gilkes of Canada and Emma Kimilainen of Finland. Chadwick quickly regained the lead.

The Hockenheimring had particular resonance as the first track for the series as it was where German driver Ellen Lohr became the only woman to win a race in the DTM (German Touring Car Masters) series in 1992.

England’s oldest soccer team relegated

SWINDON, England

Notts County, one of the founder members of the English league in 1888, has dropped out of the country’s top four professional divisions for the first time.

The team from central England was beaten at Swindon 3-1 to finish in next-to-last place in the fourth-tier League Two, meaning it lost its proud status as the oldest Football League club after being formed in 1862.

That mantle now passes to city rival Nottingham Forest, which was founded in 1865. Some claim the oldest league team is Stoke but even the club’s own website says “many details remain sketchy” about its formation, purported to be in 1863.

Notts County has had 120 seasons in the Football League, 30 of which came in the top flight. County’s best finish was third in the old Division One, in both the 1890-91 and 1900-01 seasons.

IOC head stands with Semenya

SYDNEY

IOC President Thomas Bach said Saturday he has “a lot of sympathy” for Caster Semenya after the South African runner lost her Court of Arbitration for Sport appeal in a landmark case against track and field’s governing body.

Based on Wednesday’s CAS decision, Semenya, who won the 800 meters at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, would have to artificially reduce her levels of the hormone to defend her titles at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

After winning an 800-meter race at the Doha Diamond League on Friday, her reply to a question of whether she will now submit to new testosterone regulations and take hormone-reducing medication was: “Hell no.”

At the Australian Olympic Committee annual general meeting on Saturday, Bach said at a media conference: “First of all I must say I have a lot of sympathy for Caster Semenya over this decision.”

“Having said this, the issue as such is extremely complex. It has scientific impact, it has ethical impact, it impacts on fair play in competition so it’s extremely delicate and it’s extremely difficult to do justice to all these.”
