Eastern Gateway sweeps doubleheader

Lorain

The Eastern Gateway baseball team outscored Lorain Community College swept a doubleheader from the Commodores (9-21) Wednesday at Sprenger Stadium.

EGCC (18-17) won the opener 14-1 as Bene Pomales went 4 for 4 and Evan Knaus 2 for 2 to pace the Gators.

Derickmael Cuadrado picked up the win as the Gators snapped a four-game streak.

In the nightcap, a 23-7 win, the Gators laced 13 hits with Knaus went 3 for 3 with two doubles.

Nick Benson had two hits including a home run, Hayden Kristophel added two hits and a home run while Doug Painter, Grant Williams and Jeremiah Papa all had two hits for the Gators.

Andrew Wess earned the win.

The Gators travel to Sinclair Community College for a four-game series Friday.

First pitch is set for 1 p.m. both Friday and Saturday.

YSU baseball to host prospect, youth camps

Youngstown

The Youngstown State baseball coaching staff will host a Summer Prospect Camp on June 24 at Eastwood Field, and a Youth Summer Skills Series on July 17 at the Watson and Tressel Training Site.

The Summer Prospect Camp will feature a pitching and defense session in the morning, and a hitting session in the afternoon. The pitching and defense session will take place from 9 a.m.-noon with check-in at 8:15 a.m. The hitting session will run from 1 p.m.-4 p.m. with check-in at 12:15 p.m. Both sessions will be open to players in grades 8-12 and junior college players. The cost is $100 for each individual session or $150 for both sessions.

The Youth Summer Skills Series will feature instruction from the YSU baseball coaching staff and current players in pitching, defense and hitting. The camp is open to players in grades K-6, and the cost is $60. The event will take place from 9 a.m.-noon. with check-in at 8:45 a.m.

OHSAA, GameChanger reach agreement

COLUMBUS

The Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) is proud to announce a sponsorship agreement with GameChanger by Dick’s Sporting Goods, the leading digital scorekeeping and management app for baseball and softball.

Beginning this season, the OHSAA encourages all coaches to utilize GameChanger for scorekeeping and pitch counts. Utilizing GameChanger will allow the OHSAA to effectively monitor pitch counts and view all games and statistics in a single centralized location.

Sharon Speedway to open for 90th season

Hartford

Sharon Speedway will attempt to open the 90th season Saturday night with Tony Stewart’s Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions Sprint Cars along with the non-wing RUSH Sprint Cars. It’s Lincoln Electric Night. Race time is set for 7 p.m.

Saturday’s appearance by the All Stars will be the 104th all-time at Sharon.

Saturday is also the first of 12 scheduled appearances by the “410” Sprint Cars in 2019.

Pit passes will go on sale at 3 p.m. with the main grandstands opening at 4 p.m.

Baker Mayfield to host youth football camp

Mayfield Village

Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield announced the dates and location of his inaugural youth football camp.

The two-day Baker Mayfield Football ProCamp will be held on June 1–2 at Mayfield High School. Participants will learn fundamental football skills and have the opportunity to meet and interact with Mayfield. Each camper will receive a limited-edition camp t-shirt, a souvenir autograph and a team photo with Mayfield.

Mayfield will direct the event and alongside a selection of prep and college coaches from the area. The camp is open to boys and girls of all skill levels in grades 1-8.
