The Canfield speech and debate team finished as a top 10 team at the Ohio Speech and Debate Association’s state tournament on March 1-2.

A total of 1,114 students representing 90 teams participated.

“This is Canfield’s ninth top 10 finish at the state tournament in the past 11 years. The team finished in eighth place,” said Jeremy Hamilton, Canfield Speech and Debate team director.

The following students earned recognition at the state tournament awards ceremony: Gregory Halley, State Champion in Informative Speaking, Moe Prather, fourth in Ohio in Declamation and Alex Sanders, sixth in Ohio in Humor.

A total of 30 Canfield students qualified to the state tournament, including Congressional Debate - Robert Faix (top 48), Prabh Dhaliwal (top 48), Brandon Stratton (top 96) and Madison Zets; Declamation - Claire Berlin (top 24) and Sophie Hodge; Drama - Lauren Johnson (top 12); Humor - Kaleigh Ceci (Top 12) and Ashton Gingerich (top 24); Informative Speaking - Sophia Campos (top 12) and Bridget Fekety; Lincoln-Douglas Debate - Jessica Lee and Hannah Kelly; Original Oratory - Vincent Machuga (top 24), Grace Li, Tatiana Caballero and Gisellie Francis; Program Oral Interpretation - Annabelle Scianna and Delaney Pallo; Public Forum Debate - Anthony Biondillo and Angelo Cestone (top 32), Marina Campos and Audra Pesko, Anna Kan and Maggie Carrier; United States Extemp - Dominic DeRamo (top 24) and Sydney Kinkade.
