Penguins surrender 12 runs in first four innings of blowout

Bowling Green scored 12 runs in the first four innings and beat the Youngstown State baseball team 15-5 on Tuesday at Steller Field.

Web Charles hit a pair of doubles as part of a three-hit day and the senior also drove in two runs for the Penguins.

Cody Dennis added two hits in four at bats as YSU had its 10-game winning streak against Bowling Green that dated to 1996 snapped.

Dylan Dohanos was 4-for-6 at the plate to lead the Falcons, who had 13 singles and four doubles in the contest.

Bowling Green scored three runs on three hits in the first inning, and it capitalized on Penguin errors on consecutive at bats to take the early lead.

The Falcons then had seven straight batters reach base after YSU starter Zach Lopatka retired the first two hitters in the second inning as they increased their lead to 8-0.

Dennis reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on a wild pitch in the top of the third inning for YSU’s first run, but Bowling Green countered with a run in the bottom half and three more in the fourth to take a 12-1 lead.

Youngstown State outscored the Falcons 4-3 over the final 41/2 innings once the game settled in. Charles led off the fifth with a single, and he moved to third on a Tanner Montgomery’s one-out single. Charles scored on a balk, and Montgomery scored from second on Dennis’ single.
