Sojourn to the Past will journey south


Penny Wells, director of Mahoning Valley Sojourn to the Past on Friday, and Derrick McDowell will be traveling with a group of local students to visit the Civil Rights sites in the South where they will meet students from California and Oregon in Atlanta. They will visit the King Center and Ebenezer Baptist Church. The group will travel to Montgomery, Ala., to sit on the capitol steps where Martin Luther King Jr. delivered a speech and visit other historical sites.

The group will visit memorials in Mobile and the Edmond Pettus Bridge, and then travel to Little Rock, Ark., to hear Elizabeth Eckford, one of the Little Rock Nine, describe her experiences at Central High School. Minnijean Brown Trickey, another of the Little Rock Nine, will accompany the students on the trip. The journey will end in Memphis, Tenn., at the Lorraine Hotel where King was assassinated.
