DANCES

St. George Croatian Center, 3200 Vestal Road, Youngstown, will be the site for dance classes that will take place from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday and April 8 and 15, in preparation of the Ninth Annual Simply Slavic Festival scheduled for June 15. Doors open at 5 p.m. Lessons are sponsored by the Croatian Fraternal Union of America Lodge 66 and are taught by Kathy White, director of Od Srca Adult Tamburitzans; and Aundrea Cika Heschmeyer, director of Polish Youngstown. No experience is needed. Donations are requested at $15 per couple or $10 per person for one class or $40 per couple or $25 per person for the series. FESTIVALS

Boardman Park will host its 42nd annual Maple Syrup Festival and the Boardman Rotary Pancake Breakfast from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Park staff will be available at the Chester Pavilion to demonstrate the maple syrup process, and Boy Scout Troop 60 will be available for questions about Scouting. The Lariccia Center will be the site for the pancake breakfast. The Western Reserve Woodcarvers also will be in attendance, and Troop 60 will host a basket raffle. Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County will host its 13th annual “Plant the Seed to Read” Children’s Book Festival from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 27 at Fellows Riverside Gardens in Mill Creek MetroParks. The event, “Reading’s My Superpower,” will host authors, illustrators, storytellers, readers, giveaways and more. The event is free and open to the community.

FUNDRAISERS

Girard Multi-Generational Center’s annual fundraiser “Cars are the Stars 5” will include two special raffles this year. Winners will be announced the day of the show, June 1 (rain date, June 8). Tickets are $6 for each raffle and must be purchased by May 17. Tickets will be $8 at the door. Registration the day of the show will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the show will be from 1 to 3. The first raffle is for a Flat Screen TV (sponsored by Rep. Glenn W. Holmes, D-63) and the second is for a $250 Visa gift card (sponsored by Windsor House Inc.). Winners do not need to be present, and proceeds will benefit the center. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. There also will be T-shirts for purchase, a basket auction, 50-50 raffle and door prizes. DJ Crazy Dave will provide entertainment. St. Vincent de Paul Society, Mahoning County District, will host its spring gala from 6 to 10 p.m. April 5 in the social hall of the Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, 343 Via Mount Carmel Ave., Youngstown. Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley’s Child Advocacy Center and Mahoning County Children Services are inviting the community to the 2019 Pinwheels for Prevention event that will take place at 1 p.m. April 4 at the Holiday Inn, 7410 South Ave., Boardman, in the Grand Ballroom. (Enter through the back, side door with white canopy). The event is to raise awareness of National Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month and is free and open to the public. Mahoning County Sheriff Jerry Greene will be the keynote speaker. There will be an award presentation, a performance by the Boardman High School Jazz Ensemble 2 and light refreshments. Legacy Dog Rescue and F5RS - Frisky Ferrets, Fuzzies, & Feathered Friends will host its Picture with a Rescue Bunny event at Family Video, 4385 Kirk Road, Austintown, from noon to 4 p.m. April 13. Cost is $ 8 to have a picture taken with a therapy bunny or two and the 4-by-6 photo will be printed to take home. LIVE New Wilmington will sponsor The Tour de Donut, a bike ride that will take place June 8. Riders will depart from Memorial Field House at Westminster College. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and cost is $20 per rider, which includes a limited edition T-shirt. Various routes will include 10 miles, two 30-mile choices, and a hill challenge. Mahoning County Medical Society Alliance will host its Champagne Luncheon and Fashion Show on April 5 at Mr. Anthony’s Banquet Center. Mercy Health is the event sponsor. Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2305 S. Canfield-Niles Road, will host an Easter Alive children’s program at 11 a.m. April 13. There will be two live miniature monkeys in a petting area and a puppet skit starring “Humble” the donkey and “Gerbert.” A raffle will take place, and there will be games, crafts and snacks for children. Salem Public Library, 821 E. State St., will host its Gettin’ Crafty class for adults from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. April 8 in the Quaker Room. The craft will be butterfly flowerpots. All materials will be supplied. This class is suitable for beginner and intermediate skill participants. Youth Intensive Services will sponsor a charity basketball game between the Steelers footballer’s basketball team and Mineral Ridge staff members and Youth Intensive Services staff members at 8 p.m. April 17 at 238 S. Meridian Road, Youngstown. The Steelers will sign autographs at half time, and there will be a basket auction, raffles, 50-50 raffle and more. Concessions and pizza will be available. Trumbull County Travel Club will sponsor a motor coach mini vacation to Holland, Mich., from May 7 to 9. Holland, located on Lake Macatawa, plants millions of blooming tulips which will greet members in this town named the “Best Small Town Festival” in the USA. Reflecting on the area’s Dutch heritage, Windmill Island is on the agenda as well as the DeKlomp Wooden Shoe & Delft Factory tour. There will be time to experience traditional Klompen, photograph the Big Red Lighthouse and sit in comfortable seats for the Volksparade. Two breakfasts and two dinners are included along with the Fiddle Fire Show and the Dazzle Dinner Theater. The Travel Club is open to any person who wishes to travel and make new friends. There are no fees to join. The club has been together since 2000 and consists of people over 21. Members meet twice a year at area sites to discuss upcoming trips. All trips leave from one site and use motor coaches, trains, air and will sometimes incorporate cruising.
