YSU tennis teams beat Phoenix in HL openers


GREEN BAY, Wis.

The Youngstown State women’s tennis team opened Horizon League play with a 7-0 victory over Green Bay at the Western Racquet & Fitness Club on Saturday. The men opened league play with a 5-2 victory over the Phoenix.

In doubles play, At No. 1 doubles, Tamara Teufl and Elvira Esteo picked up a 6-1 win while at No. 2 doubles, Imaan Hassim and Claudia Barboza won 6-0.

At No. 1 singles, Hassim won 6-4, 7-5 over Yazmin Glazbrook. At No. 2, Teufl defeated Tiana Glazbrook 6-1, 6-2. At No. 3 singles, Lisa Khamassi cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Kimberley Kaome. In action at No. 4 singles, Cassandra Moraleja beat Tallie Piaskowski 6-3, 6-1. At No. 5, Esteo won 6-3, 6-1 over Theresa Tebon. At No. 6, Barboza won 6-4, 6-2 over Monika Gredzinski.

In men’s doubles play, Luke Purser and Vasilis Vardakis picked up a 6-1 victory at No. 2 while Yossi Dahan and Pol Virgili Blanco earned a 6-2 win at No. 3.

At No. 2 singles, he defeated Green Bay’s Charlie Croxford, 7-6, 6-4. Joao Garretto picked up a 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 win over Miles McDowall at No. 3 to clinch the win.

The women take on Milwaukee today at the River Glen Elite. The men visit Marquette today.
