Kang hits walk-off grand slam for Pirates

Jung Ho Kang hit a game-ending grand slam to lift the Pirates. Jonah Davis, a 15th-round pick in last year’s draft, hit two home runs in his first career spring training game, and Francisco Cervelli added a solo shot. Chris Archer pitched 32/3 innings and allowed three runs while striking out six. David Hess allowed two solo homers over five innings. Trey Mancini homered off Archer.

Trout plays a day after receiving contract

Los Angeles Angels manager Brad Ausmus likes to have his regulars play nine innings at least once in a spring training game and on Thursday, it was Mike Trout’s turn against the Arizona Diamondbacks. “He’s making all that money, he needs to play nine,” Ausmus said. Trout, who received a 12-year, $426.5 million contract Wednesday, went 1-for-4 with an RBI single in the Angels’ 2-1 win.

Seattle star Ichiro retires at Tokyo Dome

TOKYO

Ichiro Suzuki announced his retirement Thursday night, shortly after waving goodbye at the Tokyo Dome during a 5-4 win over Oakland in 12 innings. The 45-year-old Seattle Mariners star went 0 for 4 and was pulled from right field in the eighth. Ichiro was a 10-time All-Star in the majors. He got 3,089 hits over a 19-year career after getting 1,278 while starring in Japan. His combined total of 4,367 is a professional record.
