Off the beaten path in Costa Rica

The Audubon Society of Mahoning Valley invites the public to “Off the Beaten Path in Costa Rica” at 7 p.m. on March 26 at the Canfield library. Costa Rica has less than half the land area of Ohio, but it boasts a biological diversity similar to that of the entire United States. The group will explore the diversity of Costa Rican ecosystems and their wildlife by visiting six sites including several biological field stations seldom seen by tourists. This program will be presented by Dr. Charles McClaugherty based on field trips taken to Costa Rica by Dr. McClaugherty and his students at Mount Union during a period of 25 years. McClaugherty retired last year after 30 years at the University of Mount Union in Alliance as professor of biology and director of the Huston-Brumbaugh Nature Center.

Valley STEM holding open house

The Valley STEM + Me2 Academy will host an open house from 6-8 p.m. on March 27. Parents of incoming ninth- and tenth-grade students, and students interested in attending, are invited to visit and learn more about the opportunities at the school. During the event, parents and students will have an opportunity to tour the lab, meet with instructors and current students and apply for next year. The Valley STEM + ME2 Academy provides the ideal setting for students to receive problem-based education, based on mastery of skills. The Academy has a STEM-designation from the Ohio Department of Education. Students in Mahoning County, and surrounding areas, can apply through open-enrollment. Mercy Health Foundation offers scholarships

Students enrolled at Mercy College of Ohio – St. Elizabeth Campus, and Mercy Health employees, their spouses and children have until March 29 to apply for nursing scholarships provided by Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley for the 2019-2020 academic year. Last year, Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley awarded more than $87,000 in scholarships to 47 students. To be eligible, applicants must be pursuing a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree in nursing, or be a nurse pursuing a degree in hospital or healthcare administration. Since the program began, more than $1.2 million in scholarships has been awarded to deserving students planning careers in healthcare. Gamblers Anonymous meetings

If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous may be able to help. Gamblers Anonymous meetings will take place on Tuesday and Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting is offered on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about 1.5 hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend.

Tri-Gold chapter of ABWA to have 15th anniversary

The Tri-Gold chapter of ABWA will host its 15th anniversary with the theme Crystal Showers Sprinkle Flowers. The event will take place on April 10 at A La Carte Catering in Canfield. This is an evening dinner meeting with a social period beginning at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6 p.m. Reservations are due by April and can be made by contacting Sharon Pasquale at 330-793-6208. Entertainment will be announced. The cost to attend is $21.50 with the choice of stuffed flounder or chicken francaise, swiss steak jardinere, tossed salad, red skin potatoes and a dessert of cake and ice cream.

Spring fundraiser to support ERKF

The Eastern Regional Kidney Foundation is having a spring fundraiser, selling raffle tickets giving the chance for one lucky person to win one-half of a grass fed Angus beef steer that was grown locally. Tickets are $25 each or five for $100 (200 tickets total are being sold). The winner will receive federally inspected beef, butchered as desired and wrapped and packaged for easy transportation and freezing. The beef is being generously donated by Mathews Cattle Company, LLC in Canfield at 330-518-5661. The company’s owners, Joel and Dr.Maureen Mathews, have been generous in supporting ERKF. The Eastern Regional Kidney Foundation is a “stand alone” 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to helping needy kidney patients in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana Counties. The group receives no funds from the American Kidney Foundation or any government agency, and depend solely on contributions from the community. All the money raised stays to help local patients. They give out approximately $30,000 annually in transportation and medication grants. Those interested in purchasing a raffle ticket can contact call 330-757-7212.

Friendly Squares host April square dance

The Friendly Squares will host their monthly local square dance on April 13 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be cuing line dances. 1970’s Disco will be the theme. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. Local church hosts dinner event

Lord of Life Church, located at 550 N. Broad St. in Canfield, will offer drive-through spaghetti dinners on March 28 from 3-6 p.m. The menu includes spaghetti featuring the church’s famous meat sauce, tossed salad, roll and butter and dessert. The cost is $8 per dinner (cash only), and proceeds will help with ministry expenses. Pull up to the back door for service. Call the church office at 330-533-3531 with questions.

New read for spiritual book club

The Ursuline Education and Wellness Center Spiritual Book Club invites book lovers of faith to join as it begins reflection of “Quest for the Living God.” The group will discuss Chapter 1 on March 25, Chapter 2 on April 29 and Chapter 3 on May 20. All gatherings are from 6-7:30 p.m. at 4280 Shields Road in Canfield. The book can be purchased at major booksellers and is available through the Search Ohio feature of the Public Library of Youngtown and Mahoning County. Canfield Middle School presents “Beauty and the Beast Jr.”

A “tale as old as time” comes to Canfield Village Middle School as students present “Beauty and the Beast Jr.” The curtain goes up March 24 at 2 p.m. for a cast and crew of 40 seventh- and eighth-grade students. Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for students and seniors, children 4 and under are free. Concessions will also be available during the show.

Evening with the Easter Bunny

Boardman Park will present an evening with the Easter Bunny from 5:30-7:30 p.m. April 10 and 11. Tickets will go on sale at the park office from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, starting March 11. Tickets may also be obtained by calling the park office at 330-726-8105 to pay by credit card, or online at www.boardmanpark.com. Tickets are $7 for Boardman residents and $9 for non-residents. Children 2 and under are free. The evening includes dinner, arts and crafts and a family photo with the Easter Bunny.

Paws Town at Boardman Park

Enjoy the benefits of the outdoors by joining the Marge Hartman’s Paws Town Dog Park at Boardman Park. The 3.25-acre fenced in dog park has separate fenced in areas for large and small dogs, water fountains, a dog wash station, benches, small shade trees and dog waste bags. One year memberships to Paws Town are available for 2019-20 and will be valid from date of purchase through March 31, 2020. Membership costs for Boardman residents are $40 for one dog and $10 for each additional dog. Non-Boardman resident fees are $65 for one dog and $10 for each additional dog. Membership packets may be picked up at the Boardman park office from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, in the outdoor literature boxes at the dog park or online at boardmanpark.com. One day passes are also available for $5. Bring your dog’s shot records on veterinarian letter head, rabies and county tag numbers. Cardinal Mooney High School announces 16th annual “Celebrate Mooney” auction

Cardinal Mooney High School has set the date for its 16th annual fundraising auction as April 13. The largest fundraising event of the year will take place at the school, located at 2545 Erie St, Youngstown, between 5:30 and 11 p.m. Cocktails and silent auction to begin at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. This year’s honorary chairwoman is CMHS teacher, mentor and Cardinals sports enthusiast, Nancy Shugart. YWCA accepting entries for 37th annual Women’s Art Exhibition

YWCA Mahoning Valley is accepting entries for its 37th Annual Women Artists: A Celebration! Art Show to take place June 28 through July 26 at YWCA’s downtown Youngstown office, located at 25 W. Rayen Ave. The art exhibition showcases work by local, regional and national women artists. The juried show features all media, including paintings, drawings, photographs, fiber art, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, videography and metal work. Returning for a second time is a juried show for young women ages 14-17 from Mahoning and Trumbull counties. The show will feature seventeen works selected by jurors from the YWCA Women Artists Committee and will run in conjunction with the Women Artists show. Two-dimensional work is eligible for the 17 Under 17 show. Entry forms for both shows are available at YWCA’s offices in Youngstown and Warren and on the YWCA’s website at ywcamahoningvalley.org/women-artists. Entries are due by April 8. Priscilla Roggenkamp, Associate Professor of Art at Ashland University, will serve as the juror for the 2019 show. A ticketed Preview Party will take place on June 28 from 6-9 p.m. at the YWCA. ‘The Twilight Zone’ comes to Canfield

The Canfield Players will present “The Twilight Zone” at 7 p.m. on April 12-13 and at 2 p.m. April 14, at Canfield High School. The cast will enact four episodes of the original television series. Tickets may be purchased at the door or by contacting Regina Reynolds at 330-533-5507.

Local church offers egg drop and hunt

There will be a free giant egg drop and Easter egg hunt at Canfield Presbyterian Church on March 30 from 10 a.m. until noon. This event is free and open to the public. Children will enjoy a puppet show, Easter egg hunt and can participate in building an egg protection unit to protect a raw egg from drops of 6, 15, and 40 feet. Light refreshments are also provided. All Inclusive Egg Hunt offered on April 7

Rulli Bros. Market, located at 8025 South Ave. in Boardman, will be the location for the second annual All Inclusive Egg Hunt. The egg hunt will take place on April 7, beginning at 2 p.m. The egg hunt is open to children in the Mahoning County, and there will be an alternative egg hunt for children with special needs inside of the store. Join the Canfield library at 10 a.m. every Wednesday in March for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the young and restless, stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children may act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play. This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a care giver.

Tales and talk for 2s and 3s

Join the Canfield library at 10 a.m. every Tuesday in March for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

Bonding with babies and books

Join the Canfield library at 10 a.m. every Thursday in March for 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize. This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months.

Strategy board games

Come to the Canfield library at 2:30 p.m. on March 23, to play games like “Stratego,” “Chess,” “Ticket to Ride,” “Settlers of Catan” and “Carcassonne.” Play what’s there or bring your own to share. Light refreshments will be served. This program is for teens and adults.

Come to the Canfield library’s monthly book club for a lively discussion of titles chosen ‘off the shelves’ of the library’s book club room. Join the fun with these upcoming reads: March - “Leaving Time” by Jodi Picoult and April - “The Immortalists” by Chloe Benjamin. Learn to line dance

Dance your way to good health at 6:30 p.m. on March 27 at the Canfield library. Line dances are easy to learn, mainly because the steps are straightforward, and you do not have to coordinate your movements with a partner. This class will combine low, moderate and high energy line dance routines and will help you burn calories at the same time.

Financial modeling and planning seminar

Spend an evening learning the ins and outs of small business with Serial Entrepreneur and the Director of YSU’s Entrepreneurship Center Joseph Angelo and some of his most promising students at 6:30 p.m. on March 28 at the Canfield library. Angelo and his students will present information about one of the most important aspects of business: finance. Learn valuable skills to plan, predict and document the lifeblood of your enterprise. Business and Investment Librarian Edward Koltonski will also be in attendance to show the numerous small business resources available through the public library. Volunteers needed for fine arts show

A juried fine arts show is being planned for August in Canfield and organizers are looking for additional help. Arts on the Commons is planned for Aug. 3-10. The committee is searching for enthusiastic, organized individuals, whether or not they have a background in fine arts. Arts on the Commons will be soliciting nationally for entrants for the show. Dr. Lou Zona, director of the Butler Institute of American Art, has agreed to be the juror and Nils Johnson has pledged the initial funds for prizes through the Johnson Foundation. The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 15. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. Legacy Dog Rescue hosting reverse raffle

Legacy Dog Rescue is hosting its third annual Reverse Raffle on April 6 at the Avion on the Water in Canfield. A total of 125 tickets will be sold. The cost is $65 per ticket, which includes two dinners and one chance to win the grand prize of $1,500.
