Healthy Active Living program available at Akron Children’s Hospital in Boardman

Akron Children’s Hospital’s program to help children and teens better manage their weight is now offered in the Mahoning Valley. Healthy Active Living was designed to help children learn healthier eating habits and become more active. Dr. Michelle Levitt, a pediatrician who is board certified in obesity medicine, works with patients and families to help them make healthy lifestyle changes. The program will be offered at Akron Children’s Hospital in Boardman, located at 6505 Market St., in Building C, Suite 2100. Appointments are available on Thursdays. Appointments are billed to insurance like regular pediatrician visits. The program is open to all children, not just current Akron Children’s Hospital Pediatrics patients. “Code Blue” documentary screening offered on April 7

The National Health Association will present a free screening of the new “Code Blue” documentary, which draws attention to the life-changing benefits of a whole food, plant-based diet, at the Ohev Tzedek Temple Social Hall, located at 5245 Glenwood Ave. in Boardman, on April 7 from 2:30-4:30 p.m. “Code Blu”e follows physician Dr. Saray Stancic as she reflects upon her journey from a multiple sclerosis diagnosis to wellness through her own adoption of lifestyle medicine. Dr. Stancic introduces the audience to expert physicians and scientists who are paving the way to make meaningful and necessary change in the healthcare environment, and in turn, empowering audiences to stand up and reclaim control of their health. There will be a question and answer session to follow with Dr. Kathy Padgitt and NHA President Mark Huberman. Local church hosts spaghetti dinner event

St. Angela Merici, located at 397 South Jackson Street in Youngstown, will host its eighth annual spaghetti dinner and Chinese auction event on April 14 from 12-4 p.m. The cost is $9 for adults, $4 for children 12 and under. Pasta dinner benefits scholarship fund

There will be a pasta dinner to benefit the Mickey Schuster Scholarship Fund on March 30 from 4-7 p.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church, located at 425 Crestview Dr. in Boardman. The cost is $8 for adults and $5 for children under 12. Carry-outs will be available.

Mercy Health Foundation offers scholarships

Students enrolled at Mercy College of Ohio – St. Elizabeth Campus, and Mercy Health employees, their spouses and children have until March 29 to apply for nursing scholarships provided by Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley for the 2019-2020 academic year. Last year, Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley awarded more than $87,000 in scholarships to 47 students. To be eligible, applicants must be pursuing a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree in nursing, or be a nurse pursuing a degree in hospital or healthcare administration. Since the program began, more than $1.2 million in scholarships has been awarded to deserving students planning careers in healthcare. Gamblers Anonymous meetings

If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous may be able to help. Gamblers Anonymous meetings will take place on Tuesday and Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting is offered on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about 1.5 hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend.

Tri-Gold chapter of ABWA to have 15th anniversary

The Tri-Gold chapter of ABWA will host its 15th anniversary with the theme Crystal Showers Sprinkle Flowers. The event will take place on April 10 at A La Carte Catering in Canfield. This is an evening dinner meeting with a social period beginning at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6 p.m. Reservations are due by April and can be made by contacting Sharon Pasquale at 330-793-6208. Entertainment will be announced. The cost to attend is $21.50 with the choice of stuffed flounder or chicken francaise, swiss steak jardinere, tossed salad, red skin potatoes and a dessert of cake and ice cream.

Covelli awarded ‘Business Person of the Year’

Sam Covelli of Covelli Enterprises, the Valley-headquartered largest franchisee of Panera Bread, was presented with the Boardman Civic Association’s ‘Business Person of the Year’ award at the organization’s annual Community Awards Dinner on March 18 at the Lariccia Family Community Center in Boardman Park. The ‘Business Person of the Year’ award is given to local businesspeople to recognize their commitment to and presence within the community. It honors successful business leaders who generate employment, resources, and quality projects for Boardman Township. The Boardman Civic Association recognized Covelli along with four other award recipients at the ceremony. Other honorees included Jenny Kennedy for Citizen of the Year, Tiffany Square Plaza for the New Building Award, Petitti Garden Centers for the Remodeled Building Award and Boardman Township Fire Station for the Special Building Award.

Friendly Squares host April square dance

The Friendly Squares will host their monthly local square dance on April 13 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be cuing line dances. 1970’s Disco will be the theme. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. Evening with the Easter Bunny

Boardman Park will present an evening with the Easter Bunny from 5:30-7:30 p.m. April 10 and 11. Tickets will go on sale at the park office from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, starting March 11. Tickets may also be obtained by calling the park office at 330-726-8105 to pay by credit card, or online at www.boardmanpark.com. Tickets are $7 for Boardman residents and $9 for non-residents. Children 2 and under are free. The evening includes dinner, arts and crafts and a family photo with the Easter Bunny.

Area business participates in health expo

Advanced Chiropractic & Rehab Inc. announced their participation in the Valley Health & Wellness Expo, for the second consecutive year. The Valley Health & Wellness Expo will take place on March 30 from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. at the Covelli Centre in downtown Youngstown. Advanced Chiropractic & Rehab Inc. has locations in Boardman, Hubbard and Kinsman.

All Inclusive Egg Hunt offered on April 7

Rulli Bros. Market, located at 8025 South Ave. in Boardman, will be the location for the second annual All Inclusive Egg Hunt. The egg hunt will take place on April 7, beginning at 2 p.m. The egg hunt is open to children in the Mahoning County, and there will be an alternative egg hunt for children with special needs inside of the store. Pinwheels for Prevention community event set for April 4

The 14th annual Pinwheels for Prevention community event is scheduled for April 4 at 1 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Boardman, located at 7410 South Ave. Pinwheels for Prevention is offered in conjunction with National Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month in April. It aims to raise awareness of the importance and need for families and communities to work together to be vigilant and report suspected cases of child abuse and neglect. The event is coordinated by Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley’s Child Advocacy Center and Mahoning County Children Services. The program features keynote speaker Mahoning County Sheriff Jerry Greene, a performance by the Boardman High School jazz ensemble 2 and the awarding of the annual Community Spotlight Award. The Spotlight Award is presented to an individual or organization who has demonstrated continued commitment and community service to Mahoning County children. The event is funded in part by the Carter and Carole Lewis Family Child Advocacy fund. Also in observation National Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month, a pinwheel garden will be planted April 1 in Boardman Park in front of St. James Meeting Place by students in East High School’s Junior Army ROTC program. Each pinwheel represents an individual adult who advocated on behalf of an abused or neglected child in Mahoning County.

Paws Town at Boardman Park

Enjoy the benefits of the outdoors by joining the Marge Hartman’s Paws Town Dog Park at Boardman Park. The 3.25-acre fenced in dog park has separate fenced in areas for large and small dogs, water fountains, a dog wash station, benches, small shade trees and dog waste bags. One year memberships to Paws Town are available for 2019-20 and will be valid from date of purchase through March 31, 2020. Membership costs for Boardman residents are $40 for one dog and $10 for each additional dog. Non-Boardman resident fees are $65 for one dog and $10 for each additional dog. Membership packets may be picked up at the Boardman park office from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, in the outdoor literature boxes at the dog park or online at boardmanpark.com. One day passes are also available for $5. Bring your dog’s shot records on veterinarian letter head, rabies and county tag numbers. Cardinal Mooney High School announces 16th annual “Celebrate Mooney” auction

Cardinal Mooney High School has set the date for its 16th annual fundraising auction as April 13. The largest fundraising event of the year will take place at the school, located at 2545 Erie St, Youngstown, between 5:30 and 11 p.m. Cocktails and silent auction to begin at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. This year’s honorary chairwoman is CMHS teacher, mentor and Cardinals sports enthusiast, Nancy Shugart. YWCA accepting entries for 37th annual Women’s Art Exhibition

YWCA Mahoning Valley is accepting entries for its 37th Annual Women Artists: A Celebration! Art Show to take place June 28 through July 26 at YWCA’s downtown Youngstown office, located at 25 W. Rayen Ave. The art exhibition showcases work by local, regional and national women artists. The juried show features all media, including paintings, drawings, photographs, fiber art, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, videography and metal work. Returning for a second time is a juried show for young women ages 14-17 from Mahoning and Trumbull counties. The show will feature seventeen works selected by jurors from the YWCA Women Artists Committee and will run in conjunction with the Women Artists show. Two-dimensional work is eligible for the 17 Under 17 show. Entry forms for both shows are available at YWCA’s offices in Youngstown and Warren and on the YWCA’s website at ywcamahoningvalley.org/women-artists. Entries are due by April 8. Priscilla Roggenkamp, Associate Professor of Art at Ashland University, will serve as the juror for the 2019 show. A ticketed Preview Party will take place on June 28 from 6-9 p.m. at the YWCA. Baby Brilliant: Bonding with Babies and Books

Join the Boardman library at 10 a.m. every Tuesday in March for 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize. This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months.

Free tax preparation and electronic filing sites

Free tax preparation is available at the Boardman library, located at 7680 Glenwood Ave., from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from March 5 through April 10. Golf classic to benefit American Cancer Society

The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 15. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. Legacy Dog Rescue hosting reverse raffle

Legacy Dog Rescue is hosting its third annual Reverse Raffle on April 6 at the Avion on the Water in Canfield. A total of 125 tickets will be sold.
