Eastern Gateway splits Ontario doubleheader


VERO BEACH, Fla.

The Eastern Gateway Gators split a doubleheader with the Ontario Blue Jays on Thursday, losing the opener 14-13 then winning the nightcap, 17-6 at the Dodgertown Baseball Complex.

In the opener, Noah Laster had two triples, a double and three runs scored for the Gators’ (4-5). Bene Pomales, Evan Knaus, Jeremiah Papa, Zach Johnson and Doug Painter all had two hits with Knaus adding a team-high three RBIs. Charles Hudack took the loss.

In the nightcap, EGCC rode a seven-run fourth inning to their fourth win of the season. Garrett Mihalick earned his first win of the season, Laster added four more hits and two runs scored while Knaus had three more hits. Nick Benson had three RBIs and Andrew Wess scored three times.

EGCC’s will host Schoolcraft in a doubleheader at Austintown Fitch on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Laster was named “Co-Pitcher of the Week” in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference.

Last week, Laster went 1-0 as he led the Gators to their first win of the season, a 6-0 victory over Community College of Allegheny County-Boyce. He threw a one-hitter and struck out nine, allowing one walk in six innings.
