Local church hosts dinner event

Lord of Life Church, located at 550 N. Broad St. in Canfield, will offer drive-through spaghetti dinners on March 28 from 3-6 p.m. The menu includes spaghetti featuring the church’s famous meat sauce, tossed salad, roll and butter and dessert. The cost is $8 per dinner (cash only), and proceeds will help with ministry expenses. Pull up to the back door for service. Call the church office at 330-533-3531 with questions.

Garden guild to meet on March 20

The St. Michael Garden Guild will meet on March 20 at 7 p.m. at the St. Michael Parish Hall, located at 300 N. Broad St. in Canfield. Ellen Speicher from The Garden Forum will present on “Plants and Gardening.” Hostesses for the event will be Janet Murray and Paula Lavin. Membership dues to the club are $15 per year.

Monday Night Writers meeting scheduled for March 18

The next meeting of Monday Night Writers will be March 18 from 6-8 p.m. in the small meeting room at the Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, located at 43 W Main St. in Canfield. Area writers, both published and unpublished, are invited to attend. New read for spiritual book club

The Ursuline Education and Wellness Center Spiritual Book Club invites book lovers of faith to join as it begins reflection of “Quest for the Living God.” The group will discuss Chapter 1 on March 25, Chapter 2 on April 29 and Chapter 3 on May 20. All gatherings are from 6-7:30 p.m. at 4280 Shields Road in Canfield. Canfield Middle School presents “Beauty and the Beast Jr.”

A “tale as old as time” comes to Canfield Village Middle School as students present “Beauty and the Beast Jr.” The curtain goes up March 22-23 at 7:30 p.m. and March 24 at 2 p.m. for a cast and crew of 40 seventh- and eighth-grade students. Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for students and seniors, children 4 and under are free. Concessions will also be available during the show.

Love Rocks! mother talks to CVMS students

Out of heartbreak comes Love Rocks! The mother behind this national movement was at Canfield Village Middle School on March 5. Susan Deiter-Robinson, Canfield resident, was this month’s feature speaker in the Everyone’s Story Matters Series. She is the mother of Anna and Abigail, the children who inspired the universal Love Rock movement. On Oct. 20, 2013, the unthinkable happened to her family when her daughters, Anna (6) and Abigail (11) lost their lives in an accident. Out of this horrible tragedy came Love Rocks! Off the beaten path in Costa Rica

Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley invites the public to “Off the Beaten Path in Costa Rica” at 7 p.m. on March 26 at the Canfield library. Costa Rica has less than half the land area of Ohio, but it boasts a biological diversity similar to that of the entire United States. This program will explore the diversity of Costa Rican ecosystems and their wildlife by visiting six sites including several biological field stations seldom seen by tourists. This program will be presented by Dr. Charles McClaugherty based on field trips taken to Costa Rica by McClaugherty and his students at Mount Union over a period of 25 years. McClaugherty retired last year after 30 years at the University of Mount Union in Alliance as professor of biology and director of the Huston-Brumbaugh Nature Center.

Evening with the Easter Bunny

Boardman Park will present an evening with the Easter Bunny from 5:30-7:30 p.m. April 10 and 11. Tickets will go on sale at the park office from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, starting March 11. Tickets may also be obtained by calling the park office at 330-726-8105 to pay by credit card, or online at www.boardmanpark.com. Tickets are $7 for Boardman residents and $9 for non-residents. Children 2 and under are free. The evening includes dinner, arts and crafts and a family photo with the Easter Bunny.

Local church offers egg drop and hunt

There will be a free giant egg drop and Easter egg hunt at Canfield Presbyterian Church on March 30 from 10 a.m. until noon. This event is free and open to the public. Children will enjoy a puppet show, Easter egg hunt and can participate in building an egg protection unit to protect a raw egg from drops of 6, 15, and 40 feet. Light refreshments are also provided. Paws Town at Boardman Park

Enjoy the benefits of the outdoors by joining the Marge Hartman’s Paws Town Dog Park at Boardman Park. The 3.25-acre fenced in dog park has separate fenced in areas for large and small dogs, water fountains, a dog wash station, benches, small shade trees and dog waste bags. One year memberships to Paws Town are available for 2019-20 and will be valid from date of purchase through March 31, 2020. Membership costs for Boardman residents are $40 for one dog and $10 for each additional dog. Non-Boardman resident fees are $65 for one dog and $10 for each additional dog. Membership packets may be picked up at the Boardman park office from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, in the outdoor literature boxes at the dog park or online at boardmanpark.com. One day passes are also available for $5. Bring your dog’s shot records on veterinarian letter head, rabies and county tag numbers. Cardinal Mooney High School announces 16th annual “Celebrate Mooney” auction

Cardinal Mooney High School has set the date for its 16th annual fundraising auction as April 13. The largest fundraising event of the year will take place at the school, located at 2545 Erie St, Youngstown, between 5:30 and 11 p.m. Cocktails and silent auction to begin at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. This year’s honorary chairwoman is CMHS teacher, mentor and Cardinals sports enthusiast, Nancy Shugart. YWCA accepting entries for 37th annual Women’s Art Exhibition

YWCA Mahoning Valley is accepting entries for its 37th Annual Women Artists: A Celebration! Art Show to take place June 28 through July 26 at YWCA’s downtown Youngstown office, located at 25 W. Rayen Ave. The art exhibition showcases work by local, regional and national women artists. The juried show features all media, including paintings, drawings, photographs, fiber art, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, videography and metal work. Returning for a second time is a juried show for young women ages 14-17 from Mahoning and Trumbull counties. The show will feature seventeen works selected by jurors from the YWCA Women Artists Committee and will run in conjunction with the Women Artists show. Two-dimensional work is eligible for the 17 Under 17 show. Entry forms for both shows are available at YWCA’s offices in Youngstown and Warren and on the YWCA’s website at ywcamahoningvalley.org/women-artists. Entries are due by April 8. Priscilla Roggenkamp, Associate Professor of Art at Ashland University, will serve as the juror for the 2019 show. A ticketed Preview Party will take place on June 28 from 6-9 p.m. at the YWCA. ‘The Twilight Zone’ comes to Canfield

The Canfield Players will present “The Twilight Zone” at 7 p.m. on April 12-13 and at 2 p.m. April 14, at Canfield High School. The cast will enact four episodes of the original television series. Tickets may be purchased at the door or by contacting Regina Reynolds at 330-533-5507.

All Inclusive Egg Hunt offered on April 7

Rulli Bros. Market, located at 8025 South Ave. in Boardman, will be the location for the second annual All Inclusive Egg Hunt. The egg hunt will take place on April 7, beginning at 2 p.m. The egg hunt is open to children in the Mahoning County, and there will be an alternative egg hunt for children with special needs inside of the store. Kindergarten readiness stations

The library’s kindergarten readiness stations are in every library branch and feature fun activities for you and your preschool child to complete together. For the month of March, stations focus on mathematics. Early math skills include counting, recognizing numerals, sorting and classifying objects, and creating patterns. Research shows that early math skills are important predictors of later achievement in math and reading. Working on these skills now will help your child be ready to learn when they get to school. Stop by any branch to visit a kindergarten readiness station and help your child build these important skills.

Friends of PLYMC chair yoga

Join the Friends of PLYMC for chair yoga at 10 a.m. every Friday in March at the Canfield library. Class is $10 a session and attendees can pay as they attend. This program is for adults.

Mah-Jongg Mondays

Practice your new skill to rattle the tiles and join the fun every Monday in March from 1-3 p.m. at the Canfield library. Bring your own Mah-Jongg set or share with a friend. Mah-Jongg sets are not provided. This program is for adults.

Gotta move story time

Join the Canfield library at 10 a.m. every Wednesday in March for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the young and restless, stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children may act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play. This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a care giver.

Tales and talk for 2s and 3s

Join the Canfield library at 10 a.m. every Tuesday in March for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

Bonding with babies and books

Join the Canfield library at 10 a.m. every Thursday in March for 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize. This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months.

Saint Patrick’s Day shenanigans

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with stories, songs, science demonstrations, a craft and more fun at 11 a.m. on March 16 at the Canfield library. There will also be a scavenger hunt throughout the day from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. This holiday program is for children of all ages.

Totally tie dye

Have fun turning regular socks and pillow cases into tie dye creations at 6 p.m. on March 18 at the Canfield libary. Materials and snacks will be provided. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Canfield library to register. This program is for children in grades 5-12.

Artist series features Monet

Learn about a famous artist and make a craft project in the focus artist’s style at 6:30 p.m. on March 19 at the Canfield library. Claude Monet will be the focus artist this month. The craft activity will be using your own dot style with markers to create your own “The Stroll” to take home. This program is for teens and adults.

Lego my library

Visit the Canfield library at 6 p.m. on March 20, to enjoy creating Lego designs. Legos will be provided by the library. Program is for children ages 6 and up.

Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association will host a blood pressure screening at the Canfield library from 1-2 p.m. on March 20.

Sit’n’stitch

Sit and stitch with others at the Canfield library at 11 a.m. on March 21. Share ideas and skills while making new friends. Bring your unfinished objects, such as quilting, appliqu , knitting or crochet, and supplies. This is not an instructor-led activity. This program is for adults.

Strategy board games

Come to the Canfield library at 2:30 p.m. on March 23, to play games like “Stratego,” “Chess,” “Ticket to Ride,” “Settlers of Catan” and “Carcassonne.” Play what’s there or bring your own to share. Light refreshments will be served. This program is for teens and adults.

Off the shelves book club

Come to the Canfield library’s monthly book club for a lively discussion of titles chosen ‘off the shelves’ of the library’s book club room. Join the fun with these upcoming reads: March - “Leaving Time” by Jodi Picoult and April - “The Immortalists” by Chloe Benjamin. Attend either the morning session at 11 a.m. on March 28, or the evening session at 6:30 p.m. on March 26, or come to both. This program is for adults.

Learn to line dance

Dance your way to good health at 6:30 p.m. on March 27 at the Canfield library. Line dances are easy to learn, mainly because the steps are straightforward, and you do not have to coordinate your movements with a partner. This class will combine low, moderate and high energy line dance routines and will help you burn calories at the same time.

Financial modeling and planning seminar

Spend an evening learning the ins and outs of small business with Serial Entrepreneur and the Director of YSU’s Entrepreneurship Center Joseph Angelo and some of his most promising students at 6:30 p.m. on March 28 at the Canfield library. Angelo and his students will present information about one of the most important aspects of business: finance. Learn valuable skills to plan, predict and document the lifeblood of your enterprise. Business and Investment Librarian Edward Koltonski will also be in attendance to show the numerous small business resources available through the public library. Magic Tree House adventures

Join the Canfield library at 11 a.m. on March 30, as they explore the many adventures of Jack and Annie with activities based upon books by Mary Pope Osborne. This program is for school-age children.

Friends of the Library Mah Jongg Tournament fundraiser

The Friends of the Library- Canfield Committee will host a Mah Jongg Tournament fundraiser on March 19 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at A La Cart Catering in Canfield. The event begins with brunch and raffle ticket sales before tourney play. It closes with sweets and the announcement of game and raffle winners. The top three players receive cash prizes. The raffle promises many interesting and delightful items. Make plans now with your foursome to attend, registration is requested by March 1. Tickets are $25 per person. Friends of the Library fundraisers help make possible popular programs like the Children’s Summer Reading Program. If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous may be able to help. Another G.A. meeting will take place on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one-and-a-half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend. The Youngstown-area G.A. groups are friendly and welcoming and established members love to see new members join the fold. They are more than happy to help suffering gamblers and are knowledgeable about how to stay clean from this dreadful disease.

Volunteers needed for fine arts show

A juried fine arts show is being planned for August in Canfield and organizers are looking for additional help. Arts on the Commons is planned for Aug. 3-10. The committee is searching for enthusiastic, organized individuals, whether or not they have a background in fine arts. Arts on the Commons will be soliciting nationally for entrants for the show. Dr. Lou Zona, director of the Butler Institute of American Art, has agreed to be the juror and Nils Johnson has pledged the initial funds for prizes through the Johnson Foundation. Golf classic to benefit American Cancer Society

The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 15. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. Legacy Dog Rescue hosting reverse raffle

Legacy Dog Rescue is hosting its third annual Reverse Raffle on April 6 at the Avion on the Water in Canfield. A total of 125 tickets will be sold. The cost is $65 per ticket, which includes two dinners and one chance to win the grand prize of $1,500. Doors will open at 5 p.m., with dinner at 6 p.m. and the raffle at 7 p.m. A Chinese auction, games of chance and 50/50 drawings will also be available.
