Pinwheels for Prevention community event set
The 14th annual Pinwheels for Prevention community event is scheduled for April 4 at 1 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Boardman, located at 7410 South Ave. Pinwheels for Prevention is offered in conjunction with National Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month in April. It aims to raise awareness of the importance and need for families and communities to work together to be vigilant and report suspected cases of child abuse and neglect. The event is coordinated by Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley’s Child Advocacy Center and Mahoning County Children Services. The program features keynote speaker Mahoning County Sheriff Jerry Greene, a performance by the Boardman High School jazz ensemble 2 and the awarding of the annual Community Spotlight Award. The Spotlight Award is presented to an individual or organization who has demonstrated continued commitment and community service to Mahoning County children. The event is funded in part by the Carter and Carole Lewis Family Child Advocacy fund. Also in observation National Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month, a pinwheel garden will be planted April 1 in Boardman Park in front of St. James Meeting Place by students in East High School’s Junior Army ROTC program. Each pinwheel represents an individual adult who advocated on behalf of an abused or neglected child in Mahoning County.
Mafia author to speak on the Jungle Inn
Organized crime author, Allan R. May, will discuss the Mahoning Valley mafia March 23 at 10 a.m. at Kravitz’s Deli Meeting Room for the William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society. The program is open to the public. Admission is $6 for non-members and $5 for members. Refreshments will be served and a 50/50 raffle will be take place, to benefit the society’s education mission. Evening with the Easter Bunny
Boardman Park will present an evening with the Easter Bunny from 5:30-7:30 p.m. April 10 and 11. Tickets will go on sale at the park office from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, starting March 11. Tickets may also be obtained by calling the park office at 330-726-8105 to pay by credit card, or online at www.boardmanpark.com. Tickets are $7 for Boardman residents and $9 for non-residents. Children 2 and under are free. The evening includes dinner, arts and crafts and a family photo with the Easter Bunny.
Project Mayhem concert set for March 22
Boardman High School will present a one-night-only Project Mayhem concert at 7 p.m. at the Boardman Performing Arts Center on March 22. Tickets are $5.
Paws Town at Boardman Park
Enjoy the benefits of the outdoors by joining the Marge Hartman’s Paws Town Dog Park at Boardman Park. The 3.25-acre fenced in dog park has separate fenced in areas for large and small dogs, water fountains, a dog wash station, benches, small shade trees and dog waste bags. One year memberships to Paws Town are available for 2019-20 and will be valid from date of purchase through March 31, 2020. Membership costs for Boardman residents are $40 for one dog and $10 for each additional dog. Non-Boardman resident fees are $65 for one dog and $10 for each additional dog. Membership packets may be picked up at the Boardman park office from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, in the outdoor literature boxes at the dog park or online at boardmanpark.com. One day passes are also available for $5. Bring your dog’s shot records on veterinarian letter head, rabies and county tag numbers. Cardinal Mooney High School announces 16th annual “Celebrate Mooney” auction
Cardinal Mooney High School has set the date for its 16th annual fundraising auction as April 13. The largest fundraising event of the year will take place at the school, located at 2545 Erie St, Youngstown, between 5:30 and 11 p.m. Cocktails and silent auction to begin at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. This year’s honorary chairwoman is CMHS teacher, mentor and Cardinals sports enthusiast, Nancy Shugart. Playtime at the library
Visit the Boardman library at 10 a.m. on March 20, to read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help him or her get ready for kindergarten. Activities will vary at each program. This program is for children ages 2-6.
YWCA accepting entries for 37th annual Women’s Art Exhibition
YWCA Mahoning Valley is accepting entries for its 37th Annual Women Artists: A Celebration! Art Show to take place June 28 through July 26 at YWCA’s downtown Youngstown office, located at 25 W. Rayen Ave. The art exhibition showcases work by local, regional and national women artists. The juried show features all media, including paintings, drawings, photographs, fiber art, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, videography and metal work. Returning for a second time is a juried show for young women ages 14-17 from Mahoning and Trumbull counties. The show will feature seventeen works selected by jurors from the YWCA Women Artists Committee and will run in conjunction with the Women Artists show. Two-dimensional work is eligible for the 17 Under 17 show. Entry forms for both shows are available at YWCA’s offices in Youngstown and Warren and on the YWCA’s website at ywcamahoningvalley.org/women-artists. Entries are due by April 8. Priscilla Roggenkamp, Associate Professor of Art at Ashland University, will serve as the juror for the 2019 show. A ticketed Preview Party will take place on June 28 from 6-9 p.m. at the YWCA. All Inclusive Egg Hunt offered on April 7
Rulli Bros. Market, located at 8025 South Ave. in Boardman, will be the location for the second annual All Inclusive Egg Hunt. The egg hunt will take place on April 7, beginning at 2 p.m. The egg hunt is open to children in the Mahoning County, and there will be an alternative egg hunt for children with special needs inside of the store. All About Trees workshop to take place at Boardman Park
Dan Slagle, Executive Director of Boardman Park, will be hosting a workshop, “All About Trees,” on March 16 from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. at the St. James Meeting House in Boardman Park. Topics will include the benefits of trees, purchasing the correct tree for the spot you want to plant it in and how to plant and maintain trees. Slagle has more than 40 years of experience in planting, caring and maintaining trees. The workshop is free, but participants are asked to register by calling the park office at 330-726-8105. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.
Kindergarten readiness stations
The library’s kindergarten readiness stations are in every library branch and feature fun activities for you and your preschool child to complete together. For the month of March, stations focus on mathematics. Early math skills include counting, recognizing numerals, sorting and classifying objects, and creating patterns. Research shows that early math skills are important predictors of later achievement in math and reading. Working on these skills now will help your child be ready to learn when they get to school. Stop by any branch to visit a kindergarten readiness station and help your child build these important skills.
Baby Brilliant: Bonding with Babies and Books
Join the Boardman library at 10 a.m. every Tuesday in March for 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize. This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months.
Free tax preparation and electronic filing sites
Free tax preparation is available at the Boardman library, located at 7680 Glenwood Ave., from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from March 5 through April 10. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one-and-a-half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend. The Youngstown-area G.A. groups are friendly and welcoming and established members love to see new members join the fold. They are more than happy to help suffering gamblers and are knowledgeable about how to stay clean from this dreadful disease.
Golf classic to benefit American Cancer Society
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 15. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. Legacy Dog Rescue hosting reverse raffle
Legacy Dog Rescue is hosting its third annual Reverse Raffle on April 6 at the Avion on the Water in Canfield. A total of 125 tickets will be sold.
