DIVISION I
Austintown Fitch — Gus Sutton (138) closed out his high school career with a school-record 175 victories and a third-place finish on Saturday. He’s the second wrestler to finish his career as a three-time state placer since Nick Bodnar in 2006.
Third is his best finish in the state tournament after taking eighth and sixth place, respectively. He completed the tournament with wins against Wadsworth’s Luke Baughman, 4-3, and Elyria’s Matt Zuckerman, 6-4.
“I feel like I did really well,” Sutton said. “It was my senior year and I could just let everything go.”
His lone loss in the tournament was to Lakewood St. Edward’s Bryce Hepner, who won the Division I title.
“With Gus, it’s not about the wins and losses. It’s about the process. If you have a setback, you have to come back and enjoy the process and keep getting better and better,” Fitch coach John Burd said. “He won four in a row to come back and take third in the state tournament. That’s big.”
Sutton’s 53 wins this season tied Andrew Fairbanks for the most in a season. The pair will be teammates on Cleveland State’s wrestling team.
Boardman — In what’s become emblematic of Michael O’Horo’s wrestling career, he needed to beat some adversity to take fifth place at 170 in his lone state tournament appearance. The bout between the senior and Pataskala Watkins Memorial’s Cole Foor became contentious when Foor began to pull and bend O’Horo’s fingers — an illegal move. Foor received no penalty for that, but he was awarded a penalty point when O’Horo slammed him to the mat. O’Horo still won the bout, 8-4.
“It was a high-emotion match knowing it was my last one representing Boardman and I just found a way to finish. Coming out on top was the most important thing,” O’Horo said. “My whole high school career has been adversity with injuries and busting weight. All those things prepared me for today.”
O’Horo is Boardman’s first state qualifier and placer since Mario Graziani in 2016. He finishes his Spartans career with 134 wins.
