Eastern Gateway wins first game of season

AUSTINTOWN

The Eastern Gateway baseball team (1-3) split Saturday’s home doubleheader with CCAC-Boyce, winning the first game 6-0 and dropping the nightcap, 12-2 at Austintown Fitch High School.

In the opener, Noah Laster went six innings, allowing one-hit, striking out nine and allowing just one walk for the win. He also had two-hits, including a two-run home run to pace the Gators. Jeremiah Papa added two hits, including a double while Grant Williams also hit a double.

In the nightcap, Papa added two more hits and had a stolen base while Doug Painter added a double for to lead the Gators.

Dylan Dickey took the loss, going 41/3 innings, allowing two runs and two hits.

EGCC will play Tuesday at IMG Academy at 11 a.m. in Bradenton, Fla., the first leg of their five-game spring swing.

Thiel falls to Rockford at Gene Cusic Classic

FORT MYERS, Fla.

The Thiel College baseball team continued play at the Gene Cusic Classic on Saturday as they fell 14-9 to Rockford University.

A two run second inning, put Thiel (2-5) up before the Regents answered in the bottom of the inning to take an 8-2 lead.

Thiel scored five runs in the seventh and eighth innings to cut the lead to 10-8.

Rockford answered with four runs in the bottome eighth to put the game out of reach.

Thiel will play Baruch College today at 10 a.m.

BW wrestlers earn All-America honors

Two Baldwin Wallace University wrestlers, junior 133-pounder Charlie Nash and junior 197-pounder Zeckary Lehman, each earned NCAA Division III All-America acclaim by placing in the top-eight in their respective weight class. The Yellow Jackets placed 14th as a team at the 2019 NCAA Division III National Wrestling Championships, hosted by Ferrum College in Roanoke, Va.

Nash, who had a 3-2 record and placed fourth, won his first two matches to advance to the semifinals and earn his first All-America award. Lehman earned his All-America honor by compiling a 4-2 record and placing seventh.

In addition to Nash and Lehman, four other Yellow Jackets, including junior 125-pounder Dante Ginnetti (Poland), all competed. Ginnetti, who was seeded fourth, had an 0-2 record and finished 25-10 this season. He has an 85-30 career mark to rank 20th all-time.

Men’s Lacrosse

Early surge leads Tomcats over Marietta

GREENVILLE, Pa.

The Thiel College men’s lacrosse team won a non-conference game over the Marietta Pioneers Saturday at the Rissell-Schreyer Dome, 16-10.

Marietta opened up an early 2-0 lead, but Thiel responded with three goals, two of which were scored by JJ Raab, to hold a 3-2 at the end of the first quarter. The Tomcats outscored the Pioneers 8-0 in the second quarter.

Raab scored seven goals, tying him for the second most in a single game in program history. Kenny Hill (3G, 1A) and Dylan Waskiewicz (2G, 2A) tallied four points apiece while Noah Lazek notched a pair of assists.

Jayson White and Quinn Rundgren score three goals each for the Pioneers.

Cole O’Connor earned the win, stopping five shots in the first half. Michael Purnell made five saves. Ryan McLane made six saves for the Pioneers.

Track and Field

Mount Union men tie for second in DIII meet

Boston

The Mount Union men’s track and field team finished tied for second place at the 2019 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.

The Purple Raiders won two events and tallied points in one other event but came up short of defending its national title. North Central (Ill.), who Mount Union edged out by a single point a year ago, won the team title with 55 points while Mount Union and Wisconsin-LaCrosse each had 39 points.

Junior Lucas Cooper (United) placed 18th in the shot put with a throw of 15.02 meters.

Malone runner places 14th at DII nationals

Malone University senior track & field student-athlete Hannah Thompson finished 14th in the 3,000-meter run at the NCAA Division II Indoor National Championship Meet on Saturday night in Pittsburg, Kan.

Thompson, who had earned All-America honors on Friday with a sixth-place finish in the 5,000 meters, concluded her weekend by running a 9:52.96 in Saturday’s 3K race. The time ranks among the fastest indoor 3K performances in program history, falling just shy of her own school record of 9:40.06.
