RedHawks keep Penguins winless

Oxford

Jeff Wehler recorded two hits, including his second home run of the season, as the Youngstown State baseball team fell 6-3 to Miami (Ohio) on Friday evening at McKie Field at Hayden Park.

Due to rain in the forecast for Saturday, there has been a change to the weekend schedule. The two teams will now play a single game tomorrow beginning at noon and a doubleheader starting at noon on Sunday to conclude the four-game series.

The Penguins scored twice in the top of the first inning to grab an early advantage, but the RedHawks scored five of the game’s final six runs.

After YSU (0-10) jumped ahead, Miami scored three runs on four hits in the second to take its first lead. Wehler tied the game 3-3 with a leadoff solo homer in the third, but the RedHawks (8-3) scored twice in the home half to move in front for good.

Wehler went 2-for-4 with a single, a home run, a stolen base and two runs scored to lead the Penguins offensively. Zach Farrar, Zach Lopatka and Tanner Montgomery each singled in the contest while Blaze Glenn and Trevor Wiersma each collected an RBI.

After allowing five runs over his first three innings, YSU starter Colin Clark settled down and held Miami scoreless on just two hits over his final three innings to keep the Penguins in the game. He struck out five batters and faced the minimum in three different innings. Dalton Earich worked two innings out of the bullpen, allowing one run on three hits and striking out two.

RedHawks’ pitchers limited the Penguins to one hit over their final five innings.

Sam Bachman allowed three runs on five hits and struck out four batters over six innings to earn the win. Tyler Bosma also struck out four over three perfect innings of relief to collect the save.

The Penguins and RedHawks will continue their four-game series with a single game tomorrow at noon. The contest will be broadcast live on YSNLive.com.
