TTU tops Penguins in doubleheader

The Youngstown State baseball team took a pair of early leads but ultimately came up short in both games of a doubleheader against Tennessee Tech on Saturday at Bush Stadium.
The Penguins took quick 1-0 leads in each contest before falling 9-2 in Game 1 and 8-4 in Game 2 as the Golden Eagles completed a three-game series sweep.
Trevor Wiersma led the Penguins (0-9) offensively, hitting two home runs and driving in four runs in the series.
The Golden Eagles scored five runs in the second inning to take control on their way to a win in the first game of the doubleheader.
Dylan Swarmer went 2-for-3 with a single and a double while Blaze Glenn and Phillip Glasser each drove in a run. Lucas Nasonti doubled and scored a run while Zach Farrar and Zach Lopatka each had a base hit. Glenn, Farrar and Jeff Wehler each recorded a stolen base in the contest.
Jay Meuse and Anthony Strothschein each collected three hits to lead the Golden Eagles (6-4). Meuse, Strothschein and Jason Hogan each drove in a pair of runs.
Travis Perry allowed eight runs, five of which were earned, on 10 hits over 42/3 innings in his first career start on the mound for YSU. Jon Snyder allowed a run in the sixth, and Dalton Earich pitched scoreless seventh and eighth innings for the Penguins.
Tennessee Tech starter Mark Leonard picked up the win after allowing two runs on six hits while striking out six in 6.2 innings.
The Penguins similarly took a 1-0 lead in the second game, but Tennessee Tech scored the next eight runs and went on to win 8-4.
Wiersma finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a home run, and Steven D’Eusanio hit his first career home run during a three-run sixth to lead the Penguins.
Starting pitcher Chad Coles took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits in the second inning. Negley pitched 32/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen, allowing five hits and striking out three. Lopatka came on to pitch a scoreless eighth.
Tennessee Tech starter Thomas Saliba allowed four runs on six hits while fanning seven batters over five innings to earn the win. Three Golden Eagles relievers combined to blank the Penguins over the final 12 outs.
YSU will play at Pitt on Tuesday at 3 p.m. That game will be broadcast on YSNLive.com and the ACC Network Extra. The Penguins will then play a four-game series at Miami (Ohio) over the weekend.

YSU improves to 7-3 at Hawk Fight Invite

The Youngstown State bowling team went 4-1 in traditional matches on Saturday and will enter bracket play seeded seventh at the Hawk Flight Invite.
The Penguins entered the day sitting sixth in total pinfall, and six individuals combined to post 4,615 pins over five matches.
YSU won its first two matches and its last two matches to improve its head-to-head record at the Hawk Flight Invite to 7-3.
The Penguins began play with their highest set of the day in a 977-832 win over LIU Post. YSU then topped No. 10 North Carolina A&T 933-915 before falling by five pins, 869-864, to No. 11 Saint Francis U.
The Penguins bounced back with an 878-795 win over Morgan State, and they concluded the afternoon with a 963-868 victory over No. 12 Delaware State.
Rachel Darrow and Emma Dockery tied with 938 pins to place 20th, and Rachel Ellis placed 23rd just eight pins back.
Nikki Mendez finished 26th with a 918, and Emily Dietz and Ashley Kolb combined for an 891 total over five games.
Today is the final day of the tournament. YSU will bowl in three best-of-seven Baker matches starting at 8:25 a.m.
The Penguins will begin bracket play with a rematch against Delaware State.
