Ash Wednesday


BOARDMAN: Boardman United Methodist Church, 6809 Market St., will have an Ash Wednesday service with imposition of the ashes at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel. The imposition of the ashes will also be offered during the 10 a.m. service March 10. Call 330-758-4527 for information.

NORTH JACKSON: Gethsemane Lutheran Church, 1110 N. Salem-Warren Road, will have an Ash Wednesday service at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

NEW CASTLE, Pa.: Mount Jackson Presbyterian Church, 129 Mount Air Road, will have a supper and informal worship service with holy communion at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

NILES: Niles First United Methodist Church, 608 N. Crandon Ave., will have an Ash Wednesday service at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the sanctuary.

YOUNGSTOWN: The Cathedral of St. Columba, 159 W. Rayen Ave., will have Masses at 12:10, 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Only the 7:30 p.m. Mass will feature imposition of the ashes.

POLAND: Holy Family Church, 2729 Center Road, will have Mass with imposition of the ashes at 6:30 and 8:30 a.m., and at noon and 7 p.m. Wednesday. There also will be a prayer service with imposition of the ashes at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

YOUNGSTOWN: Faith Community Covenant Church, 1919 E. Midlothian Blvd., will have an Ash Wednesday service featuring singing, prayer, reflection on Scripture and the imposition of the ashes at noon Wednesday in the chapel.

AUSTINTOWN: Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2305 S. Canfield-Niles Road, will have an Ash Wednesday service with imposition of the ashes and holy communion at 7 p.m. Wednesday. A dinner will precede the service at 6 p.m.

YOUNGSTOWN: St. Angela Merici Parish, 397 S. Jackson St., will have Mass with imposition of the ashes at 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m., and a service with imposition of the ashes at noon Wednesday.

BOARDMAN: Bethel Lutheran Church, 425 Crestview Drive, will have an Ash Wednesday service at 7 p.m. Wednesday, preceded by a soup supper at 6 p.m.

Lent services, events

YOUNGSTOWN: St. Angela Merici Parish, 397 S. Jackson St., will have Stations of the Cross services at noon and 6 p.m. every Friday during Lent.

POLAND: Holy Family Church, 2729 Center Road, will have Stations of the Cross at 7 p.m. Friday, March 15, 22 and 29, and April 5 and 12. The church will have Stations of the Cross for students of the parish school at 1:30 p.m. Friday, March 22 and 29, and April 5 and 12. All of these services are free and open to the public.

YOUNGSTOWN: Ambassadors for Christ will have interdenominational services throughout Lent. All services will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday evenings. The schedule for the services is:

Wednesday: Holy Apostles/St. Stephen of Hungary Catholic Church, 854 Wilson Ave., will host an Ash Wednesday service featuring imposition of the ashes and a message by Sister Annette Amendiola, SND.

March 13: St. James Church of God in Christ, 75 St. James Place, Youngstown, will host.

March 20: Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church, 827 Wilson Ave., will host.

March 27: We Walk By Faith Bible Church, 827 Wilson Ave., will host.

April 3: Mount Zion Baptist Church, 827 Wilson Ave., will host.

April 10: Holy Apostles/Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 421 Covington St., will host.

Each service includes Scripture, prayer, music and fellowship. All are welcome to attend. Security will be provided.

Mahoning County Lutheran Cluster congregations: Lenten soup and service dinners every Wednesday in Lent. Soup will be served at 6 p.m. and worship will begin at 7 p.m. The schedule is:

Wednesday: Christ Lutheran Church, 250 Sexton St., Struthers, will host Ash Wednesday service.

March 13: Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 550 N. Broad St., Canfield, will host, with Pastor Duane Jesse preaching.

March 20: Christ Lutheran Church will host again, with Pastor David Kamphuis preaching.

March 27: Grace Lutheran Church, 162 S. Raccoon Road, Austintown, will host, with Pastor Becky Zielke preaching.

April 3: Martin Luther Lutheran Church, 420 Clearmount Drive, Youngstown, will host, with Pastor Dawn Richie preaching.

April 10: Zion Lutheran Church, 3300 Canfield Road, Youngstown, will host, with Pastor Pam Kelly preaching.

AUSTINTOWN: Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2305 S. Canfield-Niles Road, will have a light dinner and Lenten worship service each Wednesday throughout Lent at 6 p.m.

POLAND: Holy Family Parish Center, 2729 Center Road, will host screenings of Bishop Robert Barron’s video series “The Mass” at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 14, 21 and 28, and April 4 and 11.

BOARDMAN: Westminster Presbyterian Church, 119 Stadium Drive, will host a Lenten course “The Power of Small Choices,” inspired by the film “The Shawshank Redemption” at 6 p.m. March 10, 17, 24, 31 and April 7; and 1 p.m. March 13, 20, 27 and April 3 and 10. Each session will be one hour, and light snacks will be served.

This course requires participants to view the film before the sessions begin. There will be two opportunities to view the film at the church, at 6 p.m. Sunday; and at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Adults only, as the film is rated R. Registration is required. Call 330-758-4513 for information.

WARREN: St. John Paul II Parish, 420 North St. NW, will host “A Lenten Time of Reflection,” a mini-retreat, from 10:30 a.m. to noon March 13 in the parish social hall. Light refreshments will be available.

NORTH JACKSON: Gethsemane Lutheran Church, 1110 N. Salem-Warren Road, will have special Lenten services at 7 p.m. March 13, 20 and 27, and April 3 and 10. During Holy Week, the church will have a Palm Sunday service at 9 a.m. April 17, a Maundy Thursday service at 6:30 p.m. April 18, a Good Friday service at 7 p.m. April 19, and an Easter service at 9 a.m. April 21.

BOARDMAN: St. Charles Church, 7345 Westview Drive, will have a Lenten speaker series in the St. Matthew room from 7:40 to 8:20 a.m. Wednesdays during Lent. Each day, a different speaker will share their stories over a Continental breakfast.

Speakers are: March 13, Chuck Bobozky; March 20, Julie Palusak; March 27, Kris Hetzel; April 10, Brigid Kennedy, president of Ursuline Ministries; April 17, Pam Pasquale’s St. Charles eighth-grade confirmandi. There will be no speaker during Parish Mission Week, April 3.

POLAND: The Holy Family Parish Center, 2729 Center Road, will have a “Women of the Bible” meditation followed by a catered lunch from noon to 1 p.m. March 13, 20 and 27, and April 3 and 10. Pre-registration, including a $10 donation, is required. Reservations can be made by calling 330-757-7545.

COLUMBIANA: St. Jude Church, 180 Seventh St., will host a Soup and Bread series featuring Bishop Robert Barron’s video series “The Mass” from 6 to 8 p.m. every Wednesday between March 13 and April 17. A complimentary soup and bread supper is included. Adults and youth grades four and up are invited to attend this free series. NILES: Niles First United Methodist Church, 608 N. Crandon Ave., will host “A Tribute to the Wondrous Cross,” a free Lenten concert, at 3 p.m. March 31.

POLAND: Holy Family Church, 2729 Center Road, will have a special Mass with Father John Sheridan at 7 p.m. April 1, 2 and 3. A spiritual conference will follow each Mass.

NILES: Niles First United Methodist Church, 608 N. Crandon Ave., will have a weekly Bible study class at 9:30 a.m., and a potluck dinner and Bible study at 5:30 p.m. every Monday during Lent.

YOUNGSTOWN: St. Charles Borromeo Parish, 7345 Westview Drive, will present “Suffering Yet Still Believing: Spiritual Lessons from the Book of Job” by Father Thomas Dailey at 7 p.m. March 31 and April 1. This mission offers a thought-provoking synopsis of the story of Job and suggests several spiritual lessons drawn from it.
