Cash, Dunn, Trimmer earn academic honors

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown State women’s basketball team’s trio of Sarah Cash, Mary Dunn and Melinda Trimmer has been voted to the Horizon League Women’s Basketball All-Academic Team, the conference office announced Thursday.

The honor at the league level comes a week after the same group was named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District teams.

This is the first time that the Penguins have had three Horizon League All-Academic Team selections in the same season, and it’s just the second time that they have had multiple. Heidi Schlegel and Liz Hornberger were both All-Academic Team picks in 2013-14.

Cash holds YSU’s career record for games played with 131, and she is on pace to set the program record for career field-goal percentage as well. She was a second-team academic all-district selection as a fifth-year senior working on her master’s degree in professional communication. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering last spring.

Dunn was a first-team academic all-district pick as a double-major in communications and sociology, and she was also an academic all-league selection in 2017-18. The junior is a two-time Horizon League Player of the Week in 2018-19, and she ranks fifth in the Horizon League with 13.3 points per game. She is shooting a league-best 61.7 percent from the field against conference opponents.

Trimmer is a second-team academic all-district honoree who is having her best season as a senior. She leads the Horizon League and ranks 31st in the country in assist-to-turnover ratio, and ranks second in the conference with 4.1 assists per game. Over the last eight games, Trimmer leads the Penguins with seven games scoring in double figures.

The Horizon League recognizes student-athletes with seasonal Academic All-League Teams in each of its 19 championship sports. To be eligible for Horizon League All-Academic consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.20 or higher (based on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution, having earned 24 semester-hour or 36 quarter-hour credits, and participate in 50 percent of the team’s overall contests.

Anabir named to HL All-Academic Team

YOUNGSTOWN

YSU senior Noe Anabir was named to the Horizon League Men’s Basketball All-Academic Team, the league announced Thursday.

Anabir, a 6-foot-8 forward from Geneva, Switzlerand, carries a 3.95 grade-point average in general studies and posted a 4.0 grade-point average in the fall of 2018.

Anabir, a three-time member of the Horizon League Honor Roll, is the first YSU player named to the team since Francisco Santiago in 2015-16. This also marks the fifth time since 2012-13 that a Youngstown State player earned academic all-league recognition.

Teufl wins as Penguins drop pair to Ohio State

COLUMBUS

YSU sophomore Tamara Teufl upset 48th-ranked Kolie Allen of Ohio State on Thursday as the Penguins played a pair of contests against the Buckeyes at the Varsity Tennis Center.

No. 14 Ohio State (10-2) won the first match 6-1 and the second contest 7-0.

In the first contest, the Buckeyes had won the doubles point and took the first five singles contests. The lone match remaining was Teufl against Allen at No. 2 singles. Tofil took the first set 6-4 before falling 2-6 and setting up a super-tiebreaker. With the breaker tied 4-all, Teufl scored the next three points to seize a 7-4 advantage. However, Allen regrouped and won the next four points taking an 8-7 lead. Tofil tied the contest at 8, but Allen scored the next two and had a match point at 9-8. Tofil was able to force a tie and score the last two points of the set to win the match.

The victory was YSU’s first in singles in school history against the Buckeyes in a dual match.

In her second match, Teufl moved up to No. 1 in the lineup to face 64th-ranked Isabelle Boulais. Teufl started the match strong and led 5-4 in the first set. However, Boulais rallied to win the set 7-5 and won the match with a 6-2 win in the second set.

At No. 3, Lisa Khamassi had a strong performance against Allen falling 6-2, 6-4. Khamassi jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second before Allen rallied for the 6-4 win. Khamassia also dropped a hard-fought first set in her first match of the day against No. 72 Shirori Fukuda.

At No. 5, Lucia Zagar had a strong first set against Danielle Wolf falling 6-4.

The Penguins return to action on March 10 when they begin a three-math trip to California against Cal State Fullerton.
