A group of self-proclaimed chocoholics attended Chocolate Cake Day at the Canfield library on Jan. 28.
Led by Stuart Gibbs, adult librarian, attendees discussed several aspects of chocolate, were quizzed on chocolate facts and played a game using chocolate candies.
Attendees were asked to bring a favorite chocolate dessert recipe to share and they did not disappoint. Recipes for hoho cake, black forest cake, caramel layer chocolate cake and chocolate cream pie were passed out for everyone to take home.
As people entered the sweet event, Gibbs handed them a paper with a chocolate joke written on it and later, during the program, asked them to read their joke aloud.
Gibbs gave a short history on chocolate, including the fact that during the Revolutionary War, sometimes soldiers were paid in chocolate.
Gibbs prepared a 10-question chocolate trivia quiz for the evening, and included such questions as, ‘How much is the chocolate industry worth?’ and ‘Was the Milky Way candy bar named after the galaxy?’ The answers, respectively, are $110 billion and no, the Milky Way candy bar was named after a milkshake.
Gibbs also set up a game where attendees attempted to toss Hershey kisses into a cup and the one with the most kisses in their cup was named the winner. Gibbs also read the book, “Betty Bunny Loves Chocolate Cake” by Michael B. Kaplan.
To end the evening, Gibbs served a double layer chocolate cake with chocolate frosting to satisfy the sweet tooth.
“I tried to come up with an idea that everyone would love, and who doesn’t love chocolate? We want to bring the public in with new ideas and new programs. Everyone can check the calendar for new programs or check the Happenings at your Library newsletter at libraryvisit.org/happenings,” Gibbs said.
As the last chocoholic left the event, she proclaimed the program, “Interesting and delicious.”
