The Committee to Support Canfield Schools hosted its third annual Cardinal Chili Cook-off in the Canfield High School cafeteria on Feb. 8.
Thirteen local restaurants, businesses, clubs and individuals entered their homemade chili in the contest.
There were three categories for judging: hot and spicy, thick and hearty and unconventional. A people’s choice award was also voted on by all attendees. Medals were awarded to the winner of each category.
Cardinal Chili Cook-off entrants included Brian Wydick, Lisa Resnick, Cocca’s Pizza and Wade Calhoun in the hot and spicy category; ladies of the central office, Alex Geordan, Cardinal Joint Fire District and Cocca’s Pizza in the thick and hearty category and Brian Morlan, CHS student council, Judd Rubin, CHS Food Service and Angela Alexandrides in the unconventional category.
Judging criteria included aroma, consistency, appearance, taste and aftertaste.
For the last two years, the judges named Rich Keehner of Cocca’s Pizza the winner of the thick and hearty category, but this year he was named winner of the hot and spicy category. Same went for Canfield Local Schools Superintendent Alex Geordan. Canfield Village Middle School Principal Judd Rubin took the top prize of the unconventional category with his chocolate chili-flavored ice cream titled Cardinal Chili Crunch.
When the judging was completed, the dinner was opened to the community. The menu included all-you-can-eat chili, bread, dessert and a beverage. Cocca’s Pizza donated bread sticks, Kim’s Confections donated desserts, Canfield PTO donated bottled water and the CHS cafeteria provided corn bread.
Canfield High School student council members were on hand to help to set up, serve chili to the judges and help with clean up.
The event was planned to coincide with the CHS boys basketball game versus Howland.
