Cleveland rent-to-own expert set to headline Youngstown’s MVREIA March meeting

Cleveland rent-to-own expert Matt Reed is poised to share his blueprint for success with investors. The event, themed “Getting Rid of Rental Property Headaches,” will take place on March 11 at Boardman Park’s Lariccia Family Community Center from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Reed, who boasts a large portfolio of rental properties will be addressing investors on ‘How to Explode Profits with Rent 2 Own Solution.’ Reed’s presentation will outline to investors how to manage numerous properties, how the rent-to-own solution can reduce property maintenance expenses, how to put rental homes income on autopilot, how to get tenants to pay on time, how to make it a “win-win” for investors and families with the dream of home ownership and more. Reed’s featured presentation will focus on how to “Explode Your Profits with Lease Options.” This event is free for REIA members and for first time guests. Friendly Squares March square dance

The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on March 9 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be cuing line dances. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. ABWA chapter to meet

The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its March 12 meeting at Johnny’s Restaurant in Boardman. Networking will begin at 6 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. The menu for the evening includes Italian roasted chicken, stuffed shells, sausage and peppers, Italian roasted potatoes, buttered green beans, tossed salad, fresh baked bread, peppers in oil, dessert, coffee, tea and soft drinks. The cost is $22 per person and reservations may be made by calling Lynne Mullins at 330-788-9221 by March 3. The chapter will announce its 2019 Woman of the Year at this March meeting. The entertainment for the evening will be the well-known Youngstown musical duo, Mary Jo Maluso and Rick Blackson of Beyond Broadway Entertainment. The public is welcome.

All Inclusive Egg Hunt offered on April 7

Rulli Bros. Market, located at 8025 South Ave. in Boardman, will be the location for the second annual All Inclusive Egg Hunt. The egg hunt will take place on April 7, beginning at 2 p.m. The egg hunt is open to children in the Mahoning County, and there will be an alternative egg hunt for children with special needs inside of the store. Concert to benefit Operation Blessing

The Canfield Community Concert Band will present a concert of American music to benefit Canfield’s Operation Blessing. This free concert will take place on March 10 at 3 p.m. in the Canfield High School auditorium, located at 100 Cardinal Drive. The program will feature the music of Bernstein, Copland, Ticheli, Jenkins, Smith and Fillmore. Donations of cash and non-perishable food will be accepted at the door to support Operation Blessing’s mission to help those in need in the community. The Canfield Community Concert Band is a group of volunteer musicians that enjoy making music and sharing it with the community. In addition to this annual benefit concert, the band performs regularly throughout the summer at outdoor venues and at nursing homes during the holiday season. Kindergarten readiness stations

The library’s kindergarten readiness stations are in every library branch and feature fun activities for you and your preschool child to complete together. For the month of March, stations focus on mathematics. Early math skills include counting, recognizing numerals, sorting and classifying objects, and creating patterns. Research shows that early math skills are important predictors of later achievement in math and reading. Working on these skills now will help your child be ready to learn when they get to school. Stop by any branch to visit a kindergarten readiness station and help your child build these important skills.

Friends of PLYMC chair yoga

Join the Friends of PLYMC for chair yoga at 10 a.m. every Friday in March at the Canfield library. Class is $10 a session and attendees can pay as they attend. This program is for adults.

Mah-Jongg Mondays

Practice your new skill to rattle the tiles and join the fun every Monday in March from 1-3 p.m. at the Canfield library. Bring your own Mah-Jongg set or share with a friend. Mah-Jongg sets are not provided. This program is for adults.

Tales and talk for 2s and 3s

Join the Canfield library at 10 a.m. every Tuesday in March for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

Bonding with babies and books

Join the Canfield library at 10 a.m. every Thursday in March for 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize. This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months.

The Wayside murder case

In the history of Mahoning County, only one person was ever executed for a crime. Charles Sterling was eventually convicted of the murder of 14-year-old Elizabeth Grombacher. It did not take long, however, before many people began to wonder if they punished the right man. Join Edward Koltonski, PLYMC librarian, in an exploration of this shocking crime that captured the attention of 19th-century America at 6:30 p.m. on March 6 at the Canfield library. Learn to line dance

Dance your way to good health at 6:30 p.m. on March 5 at the Canfield library. Line dances are easy to learn, mainly because the steps are straightforward and you do not have to coordinate your movements with a partner. This class will combine low, moderate and high energy line dance routines and will help you burn calories at the same time.

Movie night

Join the Canfield library for movie night at 6 p.m. on March 7, where they will be watching a newly-released PG or PG-13 DVD. Bring your own small snacks and drinks. This event is for adults and teens. Children under the age of 7 must be accompanied by an adult.

Gotta move story time

Join the Canfield library at 10 a.m. every Wednesday in March for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the young and restless, stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children may act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play. This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a care giver.

Family movie

Join the Canfield library for a Saturday movie matinee at 2:30 p.m. on March 9. Bring your own snacks and drinks to enjoy during the movie. Children age 7 years and younger must be with an adult.

Pinterest 101

Join other adult beginners and learn all about this neat, online bulletin board at 10:30 a.m. on March 9 at the Canfield library. Together they’ll learn how to set up an account, search for items (like recipes and craft ideas), create different Pinterest boards and save pins. Space is limited and registration is required by calling 330-744-8636. This program is for adults.

Tales to tails

Read to your favorite therapy dogs at 6 p.m. on March 11 at the Canfield library. This program helps develop reading skills, promotes confidence and encourages a love of reading. Bring a book of your choice or we’ll find one for you. This event is for children grades kindergarten and up. Therapy dogs provided by Pet Partners of Greater Youngstown, a local Pet Therapy group.

Coloring for grown-ups

Tap into your creative side with the newest relaxation craze: coloring for grown-ups at 10 a.m. on March 11 at the Canfield library. Colored pencils and markers will be provided along with intricate abstract and themed design sheets. This program is for adults and teens only.

True Stories book club

True Stories is the book club for people who want to read about some of the world’s most captivating real-life people and events. Join the Canfield library at 6:30 p.m. on March 13, for its monthly discussion of riveting nonfiction titles. The book selection for March is “Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania” by Erik Larson. This program is for adults.

Travel to Toronto, Canada

Come to this discussion at the Canfield library to learn about this exciting city at 6 p.m. on March 14. Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada, CN Tower, PATH system Underground, Rogers Centre, Bata Shoe Museum, Casa Loma, Toronto Eaton Centre, Hockey Hall of Fame and more will be discussed. Bring your travel expert advice tips to this program to share with others. This program is for teens and adults.

This class will review the basics and cover how to enhance your document using formatting, layout, margins and spacing at 10 a.m. on March 15 at the Canfield library. Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association will host a blood pressure screening at the Canfield library from 1-2 p.m. on March 20.

Artist series features Monet

Learn about a famous artist and make a craft project in the focus artist’s style at 6:30 p.m. on March 19 at the Canfield library. Claude Monet will be the focus artist this month. The craft activity will be using your own dot style with markers to create your own “The Stroll” to take home. This program is for teens and adults.

Saint Patrick’s Day shenanigans

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with stories, songs, science demonstrations, a craft and more fun at 11 a.m. on March 16 at the Canfield library. There will also be a scavenger hunt throughout the day from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. This holiday program is for children of all ages.

Spend an evening learning the ins and outs of small business with Serial Entrepreneur and the Director of YSU’s Entrepreneurship Center Joseph Angelo and some of his most promising students at 6:30 p.m. on March 28 at the Canfield library. Angelo and his students will present information about one of the most important aspects of business: finance. Learn valuable skills to plan, predict and document the lifeblood of your enterprise. Business and Investment Librarian Edward Koltonski will also be in attendance to show the numerous small business resources available through the public library. Adams named national winner of the 2019 Excellence in EFNEP Award

Robin Adams has been named the 2019 National Excellence in EFNEP Award winner. Adams will receive the award at a recognition celebration at the 2019 EFNEP Annual Conference in Washington, D.C. on March 12. Adams is known in Mahoning County for successfully teaching EFNEP nutrition education classes to limited resource families and her work in food security issues. She is employed by the Ohio State University Extension office in Canfield. The Excellence in EFNEP Award recognizes outstanding teaching, creativity to improve program reach and effectiveness in EFNEP programming and positive influence in the community.

Friends of the Library Mah Jongg Tournament fundraiser

The Friends of the Library- Canfield Committee will host a Mah Jongg Tournament fundraiser on March 19 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at A La Cart Catering in Canfield. The event begins with brunch and raffle ticket sales before tourney play. It closes with sweets and the announcement of game and raffle winners. The top three players receive cash prizes. The raffle promises many interesting and delightful items. Make plans now with your foursome to attend, registration is requested by March 1. Tickets are $25 per person. Friends of the Library fundraisers help make possible popular programs like the Children’s Summer Reading Program. Retired teachers association to meet on March 13

The Mahoning Retired Teachers Association will meet on March 13 at Drake’s Landing Banquet Center, located at 2177 W. Western Reserve Road in Canfield. The social hour will begin at 11 a.m. with lunch at 11:45 a.m., followed by the meeting and program. Susan Harris will preside. Sara Churchill, Digital Services Librarian from the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, will discuss library online services. The community service project will be donations to Mahoning County library’s summer literacy program. Grilled chicken salad or the buffet, which will feature parmesan crusted cod and pasta with meatballs, will be served. All area educators are invited to attend. Teacher and substitute teacher job fair

The Mahoning County Educational Service Center (MCESC) is hosting its annual teacher recruiting event on March 4 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. The teacher job fair will take place in the Joyce Brooks Center, located at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center. All recent and upcoming spring graduates in education, credentialed teachers, substitute teachers and substitute teacher candidates can meet with district administrators and substitute teacher recruiters to learn about teaching opportunities. Another G.A. meeting will take place on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one-and-a-half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend. The Youngstown-area G.A. groups are friendly and welcoming and established members love to see new members join the fold. They are more than happy to help suffering gamblers and are knowledgeable about how to stay clean from this dreadful disease.

Fr. George M. Smiga leads event at Ursuline Education & Wellness Center

The Ursuline Education & Wellness Center will welcome Fr. George M. Smiga for an evening exploring, defining and re-interpreting the Parables of Jesus. He’ll discuss the parables of the 100 Sheep, the Pharisee and the Tax Collector, and the Prodigal Son on March 19 from 7-8:30 p.m. There is no cost to attend but freewill offerings will be accepted. NSS Life plans annual meeting

The National Slovak Society (NSS Life) local assembly 731 will host its annual meeting at 1 p.m. on March 2 at the Boardman library, located at 7680 Glenwood Ave. in Boardman. Election of officers will take place during this meeting. Members are asked to bring ideas and details to help plan assembly fraternal activities for 2019. Volunteers needed for fine arts show

A juried fine arts show is being planned for August in Canfield and organizers are looking for additional help. Arts on the Commons is planned for Aug. 3-10. The committee is searching for enthusiastic, organized individuals, whether or not they have a background in fine arts. Arts on the Commons will be soliciting nationally for entrants for the show. Dr. Lou Zona, director of the Butler Institute of American Art, has agreed to be the juror and Nils Johnson has pledged the initial funds for prizes through the Johnson Foundation. Golf classic to benefit American Cancer Society

The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 15. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. Legacy Dog Rescue hosting reverse raffle

Legacy Dog Rescue is hosting its third annual Reverse Raffle on April 6 at the Avion on the Water in Canfield. A total of 125 tickets will be sold. The cost is $65 per ticket, which includes two dinners and one chance to win the grand prize of $1,500. Doors will open at 5 p.m., with dinner at 6 p.m. and the raffle at 7 p.m. A Chinese auction, games of chance and 50/50 drawings will also be available.
