Friend to present on WWII experience
Howard “Howdy” Friend, a World War II veteran and member of the “Greatest Generation,” will share his memories of the war and his participation in the Battle of the Bulge in a presentation at 10 a.m. on March 9 at the Boardman library, located at 7680 Glenwood Ave. This lecture is sponsored by the Boardman Historical Society and is free to the public. The Boardman Historical Society meets on the second Saturday of each month from September through May at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library for a lecture on some aspect of local history. Friendly Squares March square dance
The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on March 9 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be cuing line dances. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. All Inclusive Egg Hunt offered on April 7
Rulli Bros. Market, located at 8025 South Ave. in Boardman, will be the location for the second annual All Inclusive Egg Hunt. The egg hunt will take place on April 7, beginning at 2 p.m. The egg hunt is open to children in the Mahoning County, and there will be an alternative egg hunt for children with special needs inside of the store. ABWA chapter to meet
The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its March 12 meeting at Johnny’s Restaurant in Boardman. Networking will begin at 6 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. The menu for the evening includes Italian roasted chicken, stuffed shells, sausage and peppers, Italian roasted potatoes, buttered green beans, tossed salad, fresh baked bread, peppers in oil, dessert, coffee, tea and soft drinks. The cost is $22 per person and reservations may be made by calling Lynne Mullins at 330-788-9221 by March 3. The chapter will announce its 2019 Woman of the Year at this March meeting. The entertainment for the evening will be the well-known Youngstown musical duo, Mary Jo Maluso and Rick Blackson of Beyond Broadway Entertainment. The public is welcome.
All About Trees workshop
Dan Slagle, Executive Director of Boardman Park, will be hosting a workshop, “All About Trees,” on March 16 from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. at the St. James Meeting House in Boardman Park. Topics will include the benefits of trees, purchasing the correct tree for the spot you want to plant it in and how to plant and maintain trees. Slagle has more than 40 years of experience in planting, caring and maintaining trees. The workshop is free, but participants are asked to register by calling the park office at 330-726-8105. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.
Society for Human Resource Management
The Western Reserve Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management will have a meeting on March 12 beginning with a 11:30 a.m. unitl 12 p.m. registration and lunch, and a 12-1 p.m. presentation at Leo’s Restaurant, located at 7042 East Market Street in Warren. The program will be “Legal Updates.” This presentation will review legal updates to assist the organization in remaining in compliance. Playtime at the library
Visit the Boardman library at 10 a.m. on March 20, to read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help him or her get ready for kindergarten. Activities will vary at each program. This program is for children ages 2-6.
Kindergarten readiness stations
The library’s kindergarten readiness stations are in every library branch and feature fun activities for you and your preschool child to complete together. For the month of March, stations focus on mathematics. Early math skills include counting, recognizing numerals, sorting and classifying objects, and creating patterns. Research shows that early math skills are important predictors of later achievement in math and reading. Working on these skills now will help your child be ready to learn when they get to school. Stop by any branch to visit a kindergarten readiness station and help your child build these important skills.
Healthier at home workshop
Attend the Healthier at Home workshop sponsored by Mercy Health Youngstown at 6:30 p.m. on March 7 at the Austintown library, and receive a free copy of “Healthier at Home: Your Complete Guide to Symptoms, Solutions & Self Care” to take home. This book provides step-by-step instructions for handling more than 200 common health problems, including self-care, prevention and determining when it is time to seek immediate medical care. The instructor will walk you through each section of the book, highlighting specific health concerns. Supplies are limited and attendees must register via the library events calendar or by calling 330-744-8636. This program is for adults.
Baby Brilliant: Bonding with Babies and Books
Join the Boardman library at 10 a.m. every Tuesday in March for 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize. This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months.
Free tax preparation and electronic filing sites
Free tax preparation is available at the Boardman library, located at 7680 Glenwood Ave., from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from March 5 through April 10. Celebrate the arts
Join the Boardman library for the 16th annual Celebration of the Arts at the Boardman library for the Opening Night Kickoff from 6:30-8 p.m. on March 5. Attendees will enjoy artwork by Boardman area students in grades K-6. Refreshments and snacks will be available. Musical interludes on opening night will be at 7 p.m. by the Boardman Elementary Chorus under the direction of Robert Pavalko. The artwork will be on display during library hours from March 5-12.

Whether the information is in the form of original documents and artifacts, or as generated research findings, this seminar will cover basic care, storage and handling techniques; repairing and reformatting; technology migration; disaster response and legacy planning. Retired teachers association to meet on March 13
The Mahoning Retired Teachers Association will meet on March 13 at Drake’s Landing Banquet Center, located at 2177 W. Western Reserve Road in Canfield. The social hour will begin at 11 a.m. with lunch at 11:45 a.m., followed by the meeting and program. Susan Harris will preside. Sara Churchill, Digital Services Librarian from the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, will discuss library online services. The community service project will be donations to Mahoning County library’s summer literacy program. Teacher and substitute teacher job fair
The Mahoning County Educational Service Center (MCESC) is hosting its annual teacher recruiting event on March 4 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. The teacher job fair will take place in the Joyce Brooks Center, located at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center. All recent and upcoming spring graduates in education, credentialed teachers, substitute teachers and substitute teacher candidates can meet with district administrators and substitute teacher recruiters to learn about teaching opportunities. There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one-and-a-half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend. The Youngstown-area G.A. groups are friendly and welcoming and established members love to see new members join the fold. They are more than happy to help suffering gamblers and are knowledgeable about how to stay clean from this dreadful disease.

NSS Life plans annual meeting
The National Slovak Society (NSS Life) local assembly 731 will host its annual meeting at 1 p.m. on March 2 at the Boardman library, located at 7680 Glenwood Ave. in Boardman.
