Blood drive

Yoga class
The Friends of PLYMC yoga class will take place every Wednesday in July from 5-6 p.m. at the Poland library. Pay as you attend. Class is $10 per session and meets every Wednesday. Dress comfortably.
Holiday library closure
All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County System will be closed for Independence Day on July 4.
YMCA hosts Camp F.R.I.E.N.D.
The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Kennedy Family Fund of The Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley to support its fifth annual Camp F.R.I.E.N.D.: Finding Rewards In Every New Day, an inclusive day camp experience for children, teens and young adult students with autism and their friends. The first program of its kind in the Mahoning Valley, Camp F.R.I.E.N.D. is facilitated by ABA Therapy Solutions. Camp will take place July 15-19 and Aug. 12-16 from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. each day at the Central YMCA in Youngstown. The grant will help more families share in this fun, summer rite of passage by allowing the camp to expand the number of campers that can attend and enabling the Autism Society of Mahoning Valley to offer financial-based scholarships. Camp costs $150 per student per week and financial scholarships are available. Registration forms are available for download at AutismMV.org/campfriend and can be mailed by request by emailing ASMV at camp@autismmv.org. The Autism Society is still welcoming volunteers, interns and neurotypical peers to assist. Donations from individuals and business sponsorships are currently being accepted to help defer additional costs.
Chalk the sidewalks
Activities at Celebrate Poland on June 29 begin early with the annual Chalk the Walks for Poland contest at 8:30 a.m. The arts and crafts show opens at 11 a.m. with many vendors and historical displays. Throughout the day, there is the Poland Idol singing contest, free activities for children, mini golf, a blueberry pie baking contest, a walking tour of Main Street and a softball game between police officers and firemen. On Saturday evening a DJ will play music from 5-10 p.m. when the annual fireworks display takes place at the old stadium. And, of course, there are many beverage and food vendors of all kinds available for everyone to enjoy all day and evening.
Legends of Asgard
Local teenagers will gather to perform and celebrate the ancient myths of Norse culture at the Poland library on July 25 at 11 a.m. Learn how Odin became the god he is and how he met his mighty end. Celebrate with the library as these talented young people teach an interesting history lesson through a fantastic performance. This event is for school-age children.
The Oakland Center for the Arts presents Rumpelstiltskin
The Oakland Center for the Arts Kids’ First Theater Incentive will present the beloved Grimm Brothers’ tale, “Rumpelstiltskin,” adapted and directed by Patricia Fagan, at the Poland library on July 11 at 11 a.m. Audience members will help the actors bring the rollicking story to a “happily ever after” ending. For the entire family.

Bonding with babies and books
Meet at the Poland library on July 3, 10 and 31 at 10 a.m. for Bonding with Babies and Books, for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. The event features 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.
Tales and talk for 2s and 3s
Join the Poland library on July 18 at 10:30 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

Make and take some fun space crafts during regular library hours at the Poland library on July 1-6. This event is for children of all ages.
Christmas in July
Join the Poland library on July 13 at 11 a.m. as they celebrate with fun Christmas-themed stories, crafts and games. Refreshments will be served. This event is for children of all ages. This is a holiday program.
Mother Earth and Green Team
Join the Green Team this summer at Mahoning County libraries for a fun and exciting program. At this program, at the Poland library on July 16 at 10 a.m., Mother Earth herself will be reading the book, “Dear Children of the Earth” by Schim Schimmel. This powerful and dramatically illustrated letter from Mother Earth to her children is a tender reminder of the responsibility everyone has to protect the world. After reading the book, the group will create earth-friendly crafts made from recovered material. At the conclusion of the program, participants will receive Earth-themed coloring books and recycling information to share with their parents. This program is recommended for children in grades pre-K through 5.
Learn about cosplay armor
Are you interested in cosplay? Want to learn more about the materials available for creating armor? Come to the Poland library on July 9 at 6 p.m. for a demonstration on working with Worbla and Wonderflex and make a wristband. Registration is required. This event is for teens in grades 7-12.
Ladybug cross-stitch with Youngstown Chapter of the EGA
Join the Youngstown Chapter of the Embroiderer’s Guild of America on July 24 at 10 a.m. at the Poland library as they present an embroidery class for children. Students will learn beginning cross-stitch to make a “Ladybug” Miniature. The design of a ladybug will be ready to be stitched by small hands. Kit courtesy of the DMC Company. Libby - the one-tap reading app for ebooks
Learn more about the library’s new mobile app Libby (The One Tap Reading App powered by OverDrive) by attending a live demonstration on July 30 at 6 p.m. at the Poland library. Libby provides a simple, elegant user experience for current and new users alike, and makes it easy for you to access your loans and holds, navigate the catalog, and more. This event features two Overdrive Technical Support Specialists walking you through setting up and using Libby. Bring your device or phone and you can start downloading free books and audiobooks today. The presentation is an hour and will be followed by an open Q&A with the specialists. This event is for adults and teens.
More than a book club
Gather together at the Poland library on July 17 at 6 p.m. to discuss the stories and information you are currently reading and researching. Whether you listen to audiobooks, read novels, read the newspaper or research online, share your sources and learn about others. This event is for adults.
Celebrate Poland 2019 upcoming
The committee that plans the annual community festival known as Celebrate Poland has been at work for several months. The committee recently announced two new exciting features for this year’s event. The historic Truesdale home at 214 S. Main Street, owned by Atty. Michael Thompson, will be open for tours from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on June 29. The 200-year old home is one of the oldest homes in Poland and Mahoning County. A $5 donation is being asked and all proceeds will be used to help fund Celebrate Poland. At 4 p.m. on that same day, the Poland Township and Village police officers will square off with the firefighters of the Western Reserve Joint Fire District in a softball game at Firemen’s Field on Riverside Drive. A trophy will be presented to the winners at 6 p.m. at the stage behind Village Hall. Celebrate Poland will take place on the grounds of Village Hall, located at 308 S. Main Street, and the practice field adjoining the property. The event is set for June 28 and 29.

Pink Ribbon Golf Classic set for July 15
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at the Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 15. The cost is $110 per golfer. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The 18-hole four-person scramble will be followed by lunch and a Chinese auction and raffle. Gamblers Anonymous Meetings
If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous may be able to help. Gamblers Anonymous meetings will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting is offered on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one-and-a-half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend.
Summer Discovery Program
Children can sign up online or at any Mahoning County public library on or after May 1, to register for this year’s Summer Discovery Program, A Universe of Stories. Summer Discovery runs from May 1 through July 31. Children can complete activities or read books to earn prizes (while supplies last) and to earn a chance to win a gift card. Children who sign up will receive a Dairy Queen coupon and Mahoning Valley Scrappers game voucher. Children who complete the program by July 24, will be invited to a breakfast event on Aug. 2, featuring author Laura Numeroff. Teens and adults can sign up online at LibraryVisit.org or in person and read 10 books to earn your choice of book. Read 15 books for a chance to win a $25 Amazon gift card. Participants will receive a Mahoning Valley Scrappers game voucher just for signing up.
Historical society to host day trip
The Poland Historical Society will host a day trip to Pittsburgh on Sept. 18. The itinerary begins when the bus leaves from the Poland Methodist Church, located at 1940 Boardman-Poland Road, at 8:30 a.m., arriving in Pittsburgh at 10 a.m. and includes a visit to the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Garden, lunch at the Schenley Park Caf , followed by a tour of the Frick Art and Historical Center and the Clayton Mansion. The bus will leave Pittsburgh at 5 p.m. for the return trip to Poland. The cost of this fundraiser bus trip is $115 and includes the bus, admissions and lunch. Registration for the trip is due by Aug. 12, but early registration is recommended. Registration forms are available through the Poland Historical Society or can be emailed. YWCA accepting entries for 37th annual Women’s Art Exhibition
YWCA Mahoning Valley is accepting entries for its 37th Annual Women Artists: A Celebration! Art Show to take place June 28 through July 26 at YWCA’s downtown Youngstown office, located at 25 W. Rayen Ave. The art exhibition showcases work by local, regional and national women artists. The juried show features all media, including paintings, drawings, photographs, fiber art, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, videography and metal work. Returning for a second time is a juried show for young women ages 14-17 from Mahoning and Trumbull counties. The show will feature seventeen works selected by jurors from the YWCA Women Artists Committee and will run in conjunction with the Women Artists show. Two-dimensional work is eligible for the 17 Under 17 show. Entry forms for both shows are available at YWCA’s offices in Youngstown and Warren and on the YWCA’s website at ywcamahoningvalley.org/women-artists. Entries are due by April 8. Priscilla Roggenkamp, Associate Professor of Art at Ashland University, will serve as the juror for the 2019 show. A ticketed Preview Party will take place on June 28 from 6-9 p.m. at the YWCA. PSHS Class of 1969 to reunite on Aug. 3
The Poland High School Class of 1969 will host its 50th class reunion on Aug. 3 at the Reserve Run Golf Course’s Another Round Bar and Grille. Throughout the next few months, former classmates will meet to finalize plans for the evening event along with plans for additional get together activities on Aug. 2 and Aug. 4. The next meeting of the planning committee will take place at 6 p.m. on Feb. 13 at the Little Red Schoolhouse, located at 4515 Center Road in Poland Township. Classmates interested in helping with the reunion are invited to attend the meeting.
