YOUNGSTOWN

The Mahoning Valley Historical Society will host free Hands-On-History open houses every Wednesday in July from 1 to 3 p.m. p.m. at the Tyler History Center, 325 W. Federal St., downtown.

Each week will feature a different local history theme. Hands-on activities will include immersive programs, arts and crafts, games, toys, artifacts, dress-up clothing, and more. For information, go to mahoninghistory.org.

All attendees get half-off admission to the museum galleries on the same day.

This summer’s themes will be:

July 10: Mahoning Valley Places, which will navigate the rich history of some of the Mahoning Valley’s most famous places, from Mill Creek Park and Greystone to Idora Park and the Butler.

July 17: Mahoning Valley People, which will demonstrate how ice cream was made by Harry Burt, how a record-setting flight was piloted with Mary Ann Campana, how masterpieces were built by P. Ross Berry, how justice was fought for by Harriet Taylor Upton and other accomplishments by Valley citizens.

July 24: Mahoning Valley Progress, which will showcase how life in the Mahoning Valley has changed over time and explore how attendees can make their mark on the Valley’s future.

July 31: Celebrate Youngstown, which will celebrate the food, heritage, people, and events that give the Valley its character.
