Pennsylvania tops Ohio 21-0 in all-star game

BEAVER FALLS, PA.

Beaver High School’s Noah Yates returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart’s Tyler Bradley threw two TD passes as Pennsylvania beat Ohio 21-0 in the 40th annual Penn-Ohio Football Classic on Wednesday night at Geneva College’s Reeves Field.

The win snapped a three-game losing streak for Pennsylvania in the annual all-star game.

Bradley threw TD passes of 22 yards to Anthony Mendicino (Central Valley) and 3 yards to Brodie List (Beaver).

The game pits players from eastern Ohio against players from Beaver, Lawrence and Allegheny counties in western Pennsylvania.

Veterans’ Outreach golf outing is Friday

Veterans’ Outreach will sponsor its fourth annual golf scramble on Friday at Mahoning Country Club.

There is space available for two more foursomes. Cost is $60 per golfer and $240 per team. Outing includes a dinner buffet and has a shotgun start at 9 a.m..

Bill Hillgrove awarded Voice of College Sports

Bill Hillgrove, the longtime radio play-by-play announcer for Pittsburgh football and basketball, was honored with the Woody Durham Voice of College Sports Award in Winston-Salem Monday. Hillgrove was selected by a vote of the National Sports Media Association (NSMA).

Hillgrove began his Pitt broadcast duties in 1969. The next season, he became the full-time color commentator. When Ed Conway died in 1974, Hillgrove took over as the play-by-play announcer.

In 1994, Dan Rooney appointed Hillgrove as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ radio play-by-play announcer, working alongside color commentator Myron Cope.

OGGF Showcase set for July 29 in Avon

This year’s Ohio Girls Golf Foundation Showcase will bring together LPGA Tour Professional Barb Mucha, along with local PGA and LPGA golf professionals, on July 29, at Avon Oaks Country Club in Avon.

The event gives girls an opportunity to learn valuable tips from golf professionals and play golf in a tournament all in one day.

Open to high school girls, including incoming freshmen and graduated seniors, the event includes a morning of interactive skills clinics, 18-hole tournament and awards presentation for individual low gross and best team.

Girl fractured skull at Cubs-Astros game

HOUSTON

An attorney for the family of a 2-year-old girl struck by a foul ball during a game last month between the Chicago Cubs and Houston Astros says the girl suffered a skull fracture.

Attorney Richard Mithoff on Wednesday provided the first update by the girl’s family on her condition since she was hit during the May 29 game in Houston.

Mithoff says the girl had bleeding and swelling in her brain as well as a brain contusion.

He says she had a seizure after she was hospitalized and is taking medication to prevent more seizures.

Bob Ley retires after 40 years at ESPN

BRISTOL, Conn.

Bob Ley, an anchor at ESPN since the network’s launch 40 years ago, has announced his retirement.

Ley was ESPN’s longest-tenured anchor, joining “SportsCenter” on the channel’s third day of operation on Sept. 9, 1979. He hosted “Outside The Lines,” an investigative news program, from its launch in 1990 until he took a sabbatical last September.

The 64-year-old Ley tweeted Wednesday that he’s enjoying the “best of health” and that the decision was “entirely” his own.
