STRUTHERS

Anthony Bennett has been chosen as the 2019 Otis R. Heldman Scholar-Athlete Award winner, and is the recipient of the accompanying $8,000 scholarship. Bennett is the son of Lisa Morris of Struthers. He graduated from Struthers High School with a 3.9 grade point average and completed the U.S. Government and Politics Advanced Placement course. He also was the salutatorian of the 2019 graduating class of SHS.

To qualify for the scholarship, Bennett was required to submit a written essay on a pre-determined topic and request three letters of recommendation, one each from a teacher, a coach and a teammate. Other requirements include achieving a minimum 3.7 GPA in college preparatory classes, election into the National Honor Society and earning at least two varsity letters in an OHSAA-sanctioned sport.

A five-person selection committee composed of two college professors, two varsity coaches from the tri-county area and one member-at-large chose Bennett for the scholarship. No committee member can be an employee of the city of Struthers or the school district.

Bennett plans to major in physics at Miami University this fall, and his goal is to work at NASA.
