Book club celebrates 80th anniversary
Staff report
CANFIELD
The Monday Book Review Club recently celebrated its founding week with an 80th Anniversary Tea Party at Tippecanoe Country Club. The club was organized in 1939 by eight bridge-playing friends: Mrs. Greer Baer, Mrs. Bruce Ogden, Mrs. Robert Mossman, Mrs. William Holzworth, Mrs. Wallace Judd, Mrs. Lyle Spencer, Mrs. F. E. Miller and Mrs. Walter Zimmerman. Each of the women brought two friends who then formed the organization’s initial membership. Rules and regulations were set into place, most of which are still followed today.
The club has progressed from reviewing books, many of which were presented by the late Barbara Armstrong, to hosting authors who discuss their books. Club members learn about subjects ranging from history and music to travel and fiction.
Sean Posey was the speaker at the anniversary celebration and discussed his book, “Historic Theaters of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley.” He also presented awards to two of several ladies who donned hats for the event: Mary Ann Fees as “Most Outlandish” and Suzanne Steck as “Most Glamorous.”
The 2019 board members of the Monday Book Review Club are Becky Borman, Laurel Chevlen, Kathy Doyle, Kay Flauto, Nancy Lawson, Talva Maslach, Betty McLaughlin and Carole G. McDonough, president.
