Vanderbilt wins opener of College World Series

OMAHA, NEB.

Austin Martin homered on Reid Detmers’ first pitch and went deep again in the seventh to break a tie in Vanderbilt’s 3-1 victory over Louisville on Sunday in the College World Series.

Drake Fellows came off a poor outing in the super regionals to pitch seven strong innings and help No. 2 seed Vanderbilt (55-11) improve to 4-0 in its openers.

Martin homered twice for the second straight game, having hit two against Duke on June 9. He became the first player since Florida’s Harrison Bader in 2015 to lead off a CWS game with a homer when he drove Detmers’ initial offering out to left. His two-run homer off Bryan Hoeing (3-4) in the seventh barely cleared the wall in left center, but it was long enough to break a 1-all tie after Julian Infante doubled.

Thailand scores in loss to Sweden

NICE, FRANCE

A couple of seconds elapsed before a disbelieving Kanjana Sungngoen raised her arms in celebration.

It really happened – Thailand had finally scored at this Women’s World Cup.

By the time Sungngoen found the net against Sweden in the first minute of stoppage time, Thailand was already trailing 4-0 Sunday. But simply scoring was a triumph after Thailand’s humiliating 13-0 opening loss to the United States. Coaches embraced on the bench and Thai flags were raised in the stands on the French Riviera.

They were still beaming after the final whistle, even after Elin Rubensson scored with the final kick of the game from the penalty spot to seal a 5-1 victory for Sweden, which advanced to the round of 16 with a game to spare.

“Everyone was very happy that we at least scored one,” Kanjana said through a translator. “The whole team is very glad.”

Bell first in Xfinity race

NEWTON, Iowa

Christopher Bell won the NASCAR Xfinity series race Sunday at the Iowa Speedway, his fourth victory of the season and second straight in Newton. He led 186 of 250 laps to claim his second short track win of 2019 by nearly two seconds. He also won at Bristol in April.

Pole-sitter Cole Custer was second, followed by Justin Allgaier and Harrison Burton. Zane Smith was fifth in just his fifth start in the series. Custer briefly stole the lead with 32 laps left on a restart, but Bell quickly grabbed it back as the two cars made contact on Bell’s low pass. Bell then held Custer off on a restart with 10 to go by grabbing the high line.

Alonso, Toyota win 24 hours of Le Mans

LE MANS, France

Fernando Alonso won the 24 Hours Le Mans endurance race for the second straight year after the Toyota Gazoo team’s other car came unstuck on Sunday.

It was the two-time Formula One champion’s last race in the World Endurance Championship, and also sealed the WEC title. Alonso and his co-drivers Sebastien Buemi and Kazuki Nakajima, who took the checkered flag, had luck on their side in securing the title.

With about one hour left, the Toyota No. 7 car driven by Jose Maria Lopez had to pit for a tire change when comfortably leading. The driver was not sure whether it was a sensor or a suspected puncture, but his enforced stop effectively handed the race lead to Alonso’s No. 8 car.

It was an identical result to last year with the No. 7 car — again featuring Kamui Kobayashi and Mike Conway — finishing second.

CORRECTION

Gayle Lynn Annarella was diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma in 2011. The story on Phil Annarella’s funeral in Sunday’s edition on page B1 incorrectly reported the year of diagnosis.
