Black Bears score twice in seventh, split series with MV

The West Virginia Black Bears scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning, beating the Mahoning Valley Scrappers 6-3 on Saturday night.

Dean Lockery added a two-out RBI single to right to give the Black Bears a 3-2 lead in the seventh. Jonah Davis scored on a wild pitch by Luis Valdez later in the inning.

The Black Bears (1-1) took a opened the scoring in the third. Elys Escobar hit a leadoff double and scored on a two-out pass ball by catcher Bryan Lavastida.

Juan Pie tied the game with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the sixth.

George Valera and Lavastida each hit their first home runs of the season in the top of the fourth to give the Scrappers a 2-1 lead.

Mahoning Valley (1-1) scored in the eighth, but the Black Bears responded with two runs for a 6-3 advantage.

Valdez took the loss, allowing two runs in one inning of relief.

The Scrappers’ will host Batavia for a two-game series. First pitch for today’s home opener is 6:35 p.m.
