YSU to host summer basketball camps
YOUNGSTOWN
The Youngstown State’s women’s basketball coaching staff is hosting three camps — two for high schoolers and one for kids in grades 4 through 8 — at Stambaugh Stadium Gym.
The grades 4 through 8 camp is a three-day affair focused on fundamentals from June 24 through June 27. It costs $130 to register and walk-ups are accepted.
There’s a two-session elite camp for high schoolers looking to play collegiately on June 23 and on Aug. 4. It runs 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with lunch provided. It costs $80 per session or $150 for both.
YSU will host a team shootout on June 22 and costs $280. Teams are guaranteed four games and discounts will be provided for a coach bringing multiple teams. Due to NCAA rules, instruction time will also be included.

Former Greatest champ plays on Web.com Tour
SPRINGFIELD, ILL.
Former Kennedy Catholic High School and Robert Morris University golfer Matt Gurska is competing on the Web.com Tour.
Gurska, a former Vindicator Greatest Golfer of the Valley champion, shot a 3-over par 74 Thursday in the first round of the Lincoln Land Championship at Panther Creek Country Club.
Gurska, a native of Hermitage, Pa., shot 37 on both the front and back side and is nine strokes behind first-round leader Billy Kennedy.
Braves top Pirates 6-5 to finish 4-game sweep
ATLANTA
Josh Donaldson drove in the tie-breaking run in Atlanta’s five-run fifth inning to win his rematch with Joe Musgrove, and the Braves beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-5 on Thursday to complete a four-game sweep.
The Braves have won seven straight to pass Philadelphia for the NL East lead. The Phillies and Braves open a three-game series on Friday night.
Julio Teheran (5-3) allowed two runs, one earned, in six innings. He has allowed no more than one earned run in his last eight starts.
Luke Jackson gave up Starling Marte’s run-scoring single in the ninth before recovering for his 10th save in 15 chances. Marte’s single past shortstop Dansby Swanston drove in Bryan Reynolds, who doubled and advanced to third on catcher Brian McCann’s passed ball.
China tops South Africa in Women’s World Cup
PARIS
China is back on track at the Women’s World Cup after a 1-0 win against South Africa on Thursday.
China evened itself with Spain for second place in Group B with three points, and now focuses on its next match and the push to join group leader Germany in the last 16.
Forward Li Ying put 1999 runner-up China ahead in the 40th minute with an opportunist effort. Meeting Zhang Rui’s right-wing cross, she got ahead of her marker and poked the ball into the bottom right corner.
China lost 1-0 to two-time champion Germany in its opening match. South Africa was beaten 3-1 by Spain and now has two losses.
Forward Thembi Kgatlana scored against Spain and was South Africa’s most dangerous player against China, with a chance to equalize in the 76th.
Pouncing on a loose ball inside the left of the penalty area, her shot hit defender Lin Yuping near her right shoulder. There were calls for a penalty but no video review was done.
N.Y. Jets add CB Myers, waive S John Battle
FLORHAM PARK, N.J.
The New York Jets have signed cornerback Mark Myers and waived safety John Battle.
Joe Douglas wasn’t kidding when he said during his introductory news conference that he would scour the waiver wire to add players. The new general manager made his second move in as many days Thursday to bring in a cornerback.
He claimed Montrel Meander off waivers from Oakland on Wednesday.
